Econergy Midlands Office, Harnage, 30kW

Harnage Estates, near Telford, is the location of Below; 30kW Log boiler with 2,000 litre buffer tank
Econergy Midlands office. This office is the centre for
Econergy Distributors and Econergy staff technical &
servicing boiler training. Econergy decided to install a
wood boiler to heat the office and provide a training tool.

Boiler

Due to the availability of logs on the estate from the

adjacent Midlands Wood Fuel company, a 30kW FHG
Froling high efficient log boiler was chosen.

Technical Summary

• 91% efficient.
• Lambdatronic S3100 Comfort controls to give
modulating combustion control via Lambda
sensor.
• Turbulator package for easy cleaning and
sustained high efficiencies.
• Large filling capacity for half metre logs and
coarse chopper fuel
• Electronically controlled induced draught fan, so
the boiler can be started with ease, even when the
flue is cold

Buffer Tanks

The use of a hot water buffer tank in log

boiler central heating systems is a new
concept in the UK, although common place
in Austria.

It operates as a heat store for the system,

charging up when the boiler has satisfied
the heat load, and discharging when the
boiler has burnt through a batch of logs and
the heating system requires heat.

This reduces the number of times the boiler

has to be attended, reducing customer
workload and increasing system efficiency.

A 2000 litre buffer tank was installed for this

project.

Operation

• Boiler is loaded with logs up to once a

day in the coldest part of the heating
season, perhaps 2 or 3 times a week
in spring and autumn,
Above; Log store, one box last approximately 4 weeks
Below; Boiler loaded and ready for lightening through the second • The boiler is safely lit through the
chamber door middle door.

• The boiler will start immediately with

help from the induced draught fan

• Due to the high efficiency there is

very little ash.

• Maintaining the boiler is very straight

forward, normally a 10 minute clean
every week to remove the ash from
two accessible places using the tools
provided.

• The log boiler at Harnage uses a box

of logs about every three to four
weeks.

• This equates to around 3 / 4 tonnes a

year

Fuel Requirements

The boiler requires seasoned logs / waste

wood up to half a metre in length and an
average moisture content of 25%. It is
essential that clean logs / waste wood fuel
is used. In particular, it must have no
additives such as paints, varnish or
chemical treatment.
