You Are The Universe!

(excerpted from the book Reiki, The True Story) THIS IS my favorite full-body self-treatment method. The procedure is to lie on my back and put hands on the head, down to the throat, then continue straight down the middle of the body. This treats the 7 major chakras, of course, and through them the whole body. One day as I was doing this, I had a realization about the relationship of the human body to the greater Universe how the human body is indeed a microcosm of the macrocosmic Universe (which I had known intellectually before, but had not really felt in a deep way). The feeling of a holographic Universe, and that our tiny human bodies actually encompass All That Is. I felt this as the true essence of Reiki: the union of Divine Spirit (Rei) and personal energy (Ki). The realization that we encompass, and can affect, everything in the Universe; and that we can focus the wisdom and the power of the whole Universe through our personal bodies. As I held my hands on my head and then started moving them down the rest of the body, I began to see the human system specifically the major chakras as a reflection of our solar system: Crown Chakra: The gateway to the energy of Heaven. Brow Chakra: the stillness of One becomes the first stirrings of Two, the inseparable yin and yang, whose interaction creates everything in the dualistic universe. (Time and space are the first two.) Throat Chakra: let there be Light and ten thousand other things! The will, the voice, the Word precipitating concrete manifestation from the swirls of chaos. Heart Chakra: The element of Air (which empowers and governs the human heart and lungs).* The energy of Breath. The Atmosphere of planet Earth. Solar Plexus Chakra: The element of Fire (which empowers and governs the stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen and pancreas).* The energy of Digestion, Alchemy, Transmutation. The Sun. Sacral Chakra: The element of Water (which empowers and governs the intestines, kidneys, urinary bladder, reproductive organs).* The energy of Assimilation, Relationship, Two-becoming-One in sacred union (resulting in a new creation). The Moon. Root Chakra: The element of Earth. The fundamental energy of physical existence. The rock and soil of planet Earth. Having this awareness, we can consciously connect with these energies in their totality, as they make up the whole Universe. The human body is a hologram of All That Is, and, as we give Reiki to ourselves, we can direct it, via these elements, throughout all creation.

I start with palms over eyes, the fingers of each hand crossing over the Brow Chakra....**

Then move them one at a time to cover the crown....

Then temples....

Then the front of the face (bottoms of palms at the jaw line, fingers covering eyes)....

Then ears....

Then back of head....

Then move the right palm to the back of the throat chakra (5th cervical vertebra), and the left palm to the front of the throat chakra (Yin and Yang, Vibration, Magnetism).....

Then put the right hand on the front, immediately below the left hand ... and move the left hand down, immediately below the right hand. The top edge (thumb) of the right hand is now at the top of the sternum, and the bottom edge (little finger) of the left hand is at the bottom of the sternum. This covers the heart chakra (element of Air) and the heart and thymus and lungs....

Then move the right hand down, just below the left, and the left hand down below the right again. The top edge of the right hand is now at the bottom of the sternum, and the bottom edge of the left hand is at the navel. This covers the solar plexus chakra (element of Fire) and associated organs....

Then move the right and left hands down in the same way again, so the top edge of the right hand is at the navel and the bottom edge of the left hand is at the pubic bone. The sacral chakra (element of Water) and associated organs are covered here....

Then, with both hands, cover the root chakra (element of Earth), between genitals and anus. This can be done by bringing the knees up, heels against buttocks, and reaching both hands down in front, or by turning the body on its side (fetal position) and reaching one hand down in front and the other in back....

Then I leave one hand at the root chakra and move the other up to the crown chakra and let Reiki flow all the way between them, descending from Heaven ... through Deep Space ... into the world of Vibration, Manifestation ... through Air ... through Fire ... through Water ... to Earth; and then feel the ascension, from Earth to Water to Fire to Air ... to Vibration, to Space, to Source. (As you go through this whole sequence, you may also like to experiment with feeling Tree energy at the navel, between Fire and Water.)

- photos by Michael Ash This method can also be used to send Reiki simultaneously to individuals and to the whole world. With your hands in the first position (over eyes), visualize or feel yourself connecting with individual recipients, for the greatest healing, awakening, empowerment of each, to be received whenever each person is most receptive within the next 24 hours. Then simply feel the Reiki as you move your hands through all the positions. You can put your attention on individual recipients at each position, or not knowing that Reiki is flowing to fill each recipient you've connected with, as well as yourself, as well as the greater Universe. As you move through the positions, feel the Reiki flowing in sequence through all the elements of the created world: the Void of Deep Space, the duality of Vibration, all Air energies, all Fire energies, all Water energies, all Earth energies.*** ___________________________________________________________________________________ * I know, the Taoists are flipping their wigs at this! Sorry, but this is my intuitive Universe! ** I was taught to cover the eyes with the fingers of both hands parallel, pointing straight up, which also puts the forearms parallel, in front of the body. I've since adopted the fingers-crossing position, which is more comfortable to the arms and also has the added benefit of concentrating more Reiki on the Brow Chakra. (I borrowed it from the palming technique of Dr. William Bates, who borrowed it from a Yoga technique.) *** At second level (Okuden) and third level (Shinpiden), students are given kotodama (primal sounds) and symbols to help them recognize aspects of these energies in themselves. One can start feeling the nature of the energies directly, though, at first level (Shoden) and, to some degree, even without Reiki empowerment when practicing this self-treatment. ___________________________________________________________________________________ I recommend spending at least half an hour on the head and half an hour on the body. (I find an hour of Reiki more restful and energizing than an hour of sleep.) Of course, if you must, you can do the whole treatment in as little time as necessary. Or you can do only part of it. Given a choice between head and body, I would usually do only the head and throat.

Naturally, anytime we have a pain or an injury, we can give Reiki by putting hands directly on the spot (or in the aura just above, if it's painful to touch). We can also give Reiki at various times during the day, whenever we have a little time, by putting one or both hands anywhere on the body. Reiki will be directed wherever it's most needed in the body. I urge my students to give themselves as much Reiki as possible every day. It cleans and enhances the personal energy field, opens us to intuition, and Reiki itself is our greatest teacher.
