Question
How can I upgrade my XPanel operating system?

Answer

The operating system of XPanel is Windows CE. This operating system can be upgraded by
yourself. The upgrading tool and OS image is included in the XPanel Designer software.
Prepare and install the up-to-dated version of XPanel Designer to follow the procedure
described in below.

1. Setting up the OS upgrading environment
A) Prepare the system as shown in the following picture. The XPanel must be powered off.

B) Turn off the firewall of Windows XP. This can be done in the ‘Control Panel’ of PC as
shown in the following picture. It is strongly recommended to disconnect the internet
cable from the HUB for safety of your system.

2. Execute the OS upgrading tool
A) The XPanel OS upgrade tool is provided with the XPanel Designer software. Following
picture shows where to find this tool and OS image file.

B) Give the file name of OS image to the upgrade tool as shown in following picture.

C) Trig the XPanel searching task by clicking the “Search XPanel” button as shown in the
above picture.

3. Establish the connection and download the OS image
A) After clicking the “Search XPanel” button, following message will be shown in your screen.

B) Turn on the XPanel. If there is no network problem between PC and XPanel, then
following message will be shown in your screen after 15 seconds around. Otherwise,
check the network stuffs (cables, HUB, firewall setting etc.), and try to search again.

C) Format the flash memory of the XPanel by clicking the “Format Flash” button as shown in
the following picture. It takes about 2 minutes. (Do not change any configuration in tool
window)

D) Download the OS image by clicking the “Download OS” button as shown in the above
picture. It takes about 3 minutes. If you can see the following message, the OS image
was downloaded successfully. Now, it is the time to close the upgrade tool window and
return the firewall setting of your PC to ON.

4. First time OS setup

A) Touch calibration
After successful OS download, the XPanel will progress the first time boot-up procedure
automatically. It takes about 1 minute. At the end of this procedure, touch panel calibration
screen will be shown. Follow the instructions displayed in the screen of XPanel.
After touch calibration, XPanel will show an error message. This error message notifies
the fact that XPanel application is not installed yet. Ignore this message. We will install the
XPanel application at the end of this procedure with XPanel Designer.
B) Enable the USB Host port
If your XPanel has the USB host port (XT10 or XT12 model), then it must be enabled
manually. In the case of the XT05 or XT06 model which do not have the USB Host port,
skip the following operation and move to the next step (step ‘C’) below.
A utility program is provided for enabling the USB Host port. Follow the icons listed below
started from desktop window of XPanel.

Push the “Insert OTG Key” in above dialog box. This operation enables the USB Host port.
Push the “Save Status” button for storing the configuration permanently. The system
shutdown will be done automatically. Skip the next step (step ‘C’).
C) System Shutdown
The touch panel calibration parameters must be saved permanently. For doing this, the
system shutdown must be done. This can be done by using the ‘Suspend’ function of ‘Start’
menu in desktop window.

After the system shutdown, the system will not be restarted automatically. The external
power must be turned off and on again for system restart.

5. Install the XPanel application program

The XPanel Designer provides a menu to install the XPanel application program to the
XPanel. Use the “Upgrade XPANEL Application Program” menu shown in the following
picture. This is the last step of OS upgrade.
