CULTURAL PRACTICE FOR BULB CROPS

(Potato, Carrot, Radish, Sugar Beet, etc.)

A. Site Selection

1. The area to be planted with this kind of crops must be loose, friable and
preferably of sandy loam type.

2. It must be devoid of nematodes or any of the harmful, soil-borne pests. If there

is prevalence of any pests apply Furadan or similar pesticide for this purpose.

3. It will be advantageous if the soil is rich in organic matter ( 5 to 10%) up to a

depth of 30 to 40 cm.

B. Seedling Stage

1. Prepare the seedbed, 1m x 10m, and raised by about 20 to 25 cm from ground

level. Normally, 5 to 10 seedbeds will be needed for a one hectare plantation.

2. Pulverize and level the soil of the seedbed and make a ridge around the edges
about 7 to 10 cm high.

3. Mix with the soil 200g of organic fertilizer per square meter. Then water the
seedbed to moisten the soil.

4. Broadcast the seeds carefully and evenly on the seedbed then cover with about
1 cm of topsoil. This is the procedure in seeding carrot, sugar beet and bulb
onion. Garlic is seeded direct to the area to be planted. For potatoes, the small
bulbs are used as seeding materials and they are also planted direct on the
furrows.

5. Spray a mixture of 0.67% solution (100 ml of the fertilizer in 16 liters of water)

of foliar fertilizer and 1.0% solution (160g of the fertilizer in 16 liters of water)
of ammonium sulfate (21-0-0) inorganic fertilizer, 15 days after seeding.

6. Spray the same mixture in Step B-5, 7 days after transplanting of seedlings.

C. Preparation of Area to be Planted

1. Prepare the land thoroughly by means of plowing or rotovating and 2 to 3 times

harrowing. This operation will pulverize the soil as well as eliminate the
weeds.

2. Normally, carrots, radish, sugar beets, garlic and bulb onions are planted in
blocks or beds at distances of 10 to 15 cm apart. Potatoes are planted on the
furrows which are made about 75 to 80 cm apart.

3. Apply 15 to 20 bags of organic fertilizer per hectare, either broadcasted on the

blocks/beds or placed on the furrows.

D. Transplanting and Care of Plants

1. Carrots, radish, and sugar beets are planted one by one at planting distances of
15 cm x 15 cm. Bulb onions and garlic are closer by 5 cm. Potato seeding
materials are planted on the furrows, spaced 75 to 80 cm apart, and 35 to 40 cm
apart along the furrows (between hills).

2. Irrigate by flooding crops such as bulb onions, garlic and potatoes just enough
for the water to reach the root zone of the plants. Frequency of irrigation is 2
to 3 weeks depending on the type of soil. Carrots and sugar beets are usually
watered by using sprinklers and the frequency depends on the climate.

3. For carrots, sugar beets and potatoes, side dress 2 to 3 grams of complete
fertilizer (14-14-14) on each and alongside the plants, 25 to 30 days after
transplanting (DAT). This is equivalent to 2 to 3 bags of the fertilizer per
hectare.

4. Broadcast evenly a mixture of 1 bag of urea (46-0-0) and 1 bag of complete

fertilizer (14-14-14) per hectare for bulb onions and garlic, 25 to 30 DAT.

5. Spray a mixture of 0.67% solution of foliar fertilizer (100 ml of the fertilizer

in 16 liters of water) and 1.0% solution of urea (160 grams of the fertilizer in
16 liters of water), at 35 to 40 DAT.

6. Repeat Steps D-3 and D-4, at 45 to 50 DAT.

7. Repeat Step D-5, at 60 to 65 DAT.

8. For carrots, sugar beets and potatoes, side dress 1.0 to 1.5 grams of muriate of
potash (0-0-60) per plant, at 70 to 75 DAT. This is equivalent to 1.0 to 1.5 bags
of the fertilizer per hectare.

9. Spray a mixture of 0.67% solution of foliar fertilizer (100 ml of the fertilizer in

16 liters of water) and 1.0% solution of muriate of potash (160 grams of the
fertilizer in 16 liters of water, at 80 DAT.

E. Harvesting

1. Normally, the crops can be harvested at about 90 +/- 5 DAT.

2. Carefully uproot each plant (bulb onion, sugar beet and garlic). Potatoes and
carrots are normally dug up for every hill.
