Business Ethics Assignement 1

The task given to the group was interpreted by everyone as to with a person in the industry and
find out the nature of ethical issues faced, impacts of these on careers and measures taken to
resolve these. Our group decided to formulate a Liegerd scale questionnaire for this purpose.

The questionnaire tried to encapsulate a wide variety of ethical issues (some of which might not
be related to a particular industry) which would be comprehensive enough and would gauge
ethics sensitivity on topics such as behavior during situation involving self gains and in situations
involving organizational gains. The questionnaire also tried to capture data on behavior towards
issues pertaining to social norms and ethics.

Some of the questions which we had asked are as under;(The respondents had to respond in
scale of 1 to 5)

The work culture of your organization encourages fair treatment to everyne (vendor/customer
etc) always

You use your office PC for share trading, ticket booking, holiday planning etc

You are being assigned low valued tasks if you deny manipulating data

The organization discourages use of pirated softwares

In case of indiscipline, each employee case is dealt in same manner, irrespective of

seniority/performance

I had interviewed 1 person from Siemens Ltd and 1 person from Netbrix Associates

The responses received can be interpreted in the light of the concerned person beliefs about his
organization. The respondent felt that in his organization results are important, however, means
used to get to the results are evaluated as well. Dealings with vendors are fair and they are
reimbursed in time. There is no racial or gender discrimination. Sometimes, the office
infrastructure is being used for personal work like trading, banking etc. Plagiarism and unfair
means to gain competitive advantage are not only discouraged, but punished. Pirated software
are banned and 3rd party software are being scanned before installation. The respondent felt that
since unethical means to gain business are not promoted, automatically employees are not
pressurized to go out of the way to acquire business and thus move up the ladder. The presence
of whistle blowing policy (no elaboration given) was highlighted and transparency was
appreciated.

In view of the above, I feel, the respondent is satisfied with the environment and culture of the
organization and feels that ethical behavior in his organization is not a hindrance to growth.
