PREFACE
three-volume patterns
series
It presents expanded
the principal
grammatical
of Turkish
This is essentially a new text, although it occasionally draws on earlier draft versions of FSI Turkish materials. Basic dialogues and structure drills, familiar in form from the first volume, are supplemented with exercises which are designed to lead the student into freer conversation. Narrative pa.uages serve as an introduction to the style of written Turkish and enrich the vocabulary control of the course. An effort has been made to keep current with rapidly changing language usage in Turkey.
The glossary, about 2,500 items, is cumulative for the first and second volumes. Certain conventions common to good dictionaries have been adopted to help students progress toward intelligent use of such works. The composition of all the Turkish part of the text has been the work of Selman N. AKral., Turkish instructor. Lloyd B. Swift, Assistant Dean of the School of Language Studies, has overseen the organization and provided the grammar notes. Mrs. Berit Fletcher assisted with some of the earlier units and Mrs. Uzma Alral., although not an FSI staff member, was of great assistance to her husband. particularly in checking current usages. The typescript was prepared by Mrs. Irma C. Ponce. The tapes to accompany this text were recorded in the FSI studios. The Foreign Service Institute gratefully acknowledges support from the which helped defray the cost of preparing and publishing this volume.

tIn future, all new verbs will be listed with a Parenthethic indication of the relational suffix(es) suitable on associated noun complements. 2In future, in listing words for the first time in these materials, the conventions normally followed by the TUrkse S~zlUk and other good dictionaries will be used. In this case the listing indicates that this word, like m~ny others ending in -~, takes the /i/ instead of the /1/ form of suff1xes commencing with the harmonic vowel {1\. 3synonyms, usually one of Turkish and one of foreign origin, are listed separated by a slant line. 387

Bll II
In English, verbs which are 'intransitive' (do not take a direct object) do not occur in the passive. We can say 'one goes' but not 'it is gone'. In Turkish, however, a passive form of verbs which do not take a direct object is possible invariably in the third person form without any personal ending and with an 'impersonal' meaning: Buradan gidilmez. without personal endings. Turks say: Bana B§retildi. 'No passage! ('It is not gone through here.')
In general, but not absolutely invariably, the passive in Turkish is used Thus where we say in English: 'I was taught.' the 'It was taught to me.'
lNote that there are three common monosyllabic vowel-final verbs: de 'say', ~ 'eat', and ko (alternate of koy~ 'put, place'. The three corresponding passive forms: den 'be said', yen be eaten' and kon 'be put' were noted in 11.3 (footnote ~as being monosyllabic but consisting of two parts -- root and suffix -- hence not being strict exceptions to the rule for the formation of the participle with suffix {-(4, i)r}. These forms are, respectively: denir, yenir and konur. There are also verbs: yen 'conquer' and kon 'alight, perch, camp' which have forms: yener and konar which are 'regular' according to the rule of 11.3.

The 'Reflexive' Verbal Extension {-(1)n} 'Finally Istanbul appeared in the distance. '
The basic meaning of this suffix is that the action is performed not upon an external object but upon the subject himself or upon his immediate surroundings as an extension of himself. q~r Compare: q~rU1 bak Compare: 'see' 'be seen' 'look' ,do, perform' 'be done' q~rUn bakl.n edin 'appear' 'look about one' 'get, procure'
~ ~
The last two examples above illustrate the unpredictability of meaning (at least from our [English] point of view) which often inheres in extended verbal forms, requiring the memorization of the extended form as a.separate item of vocabulary. It is clear from inspection of the formulas for passive, {-11 / -(1)n}, and reflexive, {-(1)n}, that after verbs ending in vowels or in '1' the two fall together with one form{-(i)d}. An example with a verb the root of which is transitive is: ,find' 'be found, find oneself' The latter form, bu1un, is often used in the sense of 'be in a place or condition'. Thus:
u~ sene
TUrkiye'de bu1undum.
'I was in Turkey for three years.' 'Where is he?' 'He has done this.' ('He is found (in a state of] having done this.') 'I attended the ambassador's party.' ('I was found prepared at the ambassador's party.')
The form with /-n/ following a vowel-final verb base may have an additional passive suffix
{-11} added
to reinforce the passive meaning where present: ba§lanl1 bae1an 'be begun' 'be begun, commence'
'begin' alongside the ambiguous form: by use of the word ~ himself' as in:
Very often the truly reflexive meaning -- 'do to oneself' -- is expressed 'self', often in the form kendi kendine 'himself to 'He said [it] to himself. ,1 Kendi kendine s~y1edi.
IThe 'reflexive' form.with suffix l-(i)n} thus often has a function similar to the 'middle voice' or 'medio-passive' of certain languages, indicating the performance of the action for one's own benefit, etc.: 'do, make' 'do, perform' 'make or have made for oneself' 'procure, obtain'

Thus, while okumak is 'reading' in general, okuma When further suffixed with is 'a reading' or the abstract concept of reading. on a single occasion: Okumas1 iyi de~ildi. or 'his reading' as an abstraction: 'He can read.' ('His reading exists.') 'His reading wasn't good.'
Okumas1 var.
This verbal noun also occurs as a modifier without personal possessed suffix: okuma kitab1 ••• TUrk~e, okunmas~ kolay bir lisand1r. TUrk~e okumak kolayd1r. TUrk lisan1, okunmas1 kolay bir lisand1r. TUrk~enin okunmas1 kolayd1r. 'reading book' 'Turkish is an easily read language. 'It is easy to read Turkish. 'The Turkish language is an easily read language. 'Reading 'Turkish' is easy.
When the verbal noun with suffix t-ma } occurs with third person possessed suffix either without the possessor stated or with a possessor stated which is clearly the undergoer rather than the performer of the action, the reference is to the doing of the action in the abstract: Okumak i~in zor bir kitap. Bu kitab~ okumak ~ok zordur. Bu kitab1n okunmaS1 ~ok zahmetli. 'It is a very difficult book to read.' 'To read this book is difficult.' 'The reading of this book is very troublesome. '
This verbal noun is also used in a construction which commonly translates the English 'how to do (the action of the verb)' : TUrk~e okumaS1n1 bilir. nouns. 'He knows how to read Turkish.'
Fairly large numbers of verbal nouns in this form occur commonly as common With verbs already learned the student can recognize several of these: dolma d~ma 'stuffed foods' (from dolmak 'be get full') (from doqrnak 'to be born')
'born (adjectival)'

Perhaps the most common use of this verbal noun is with possessed suffix indicating the performance of the action by a certain person or other performer - before laz1m 'is necessary', and before verbs like istemek 'to want' and soylemek 'to say' before which verbs, of course, the possessed verbal noun He wanted me to go there at once. He told me to do this. ('He said my doing this.') takes also a specific direct object suffix: Hemen oraya gitmemi istedi. Bunu yapmam1 soyledi.

NOTE:
Indirect quotation:
Indirect quotation is commonly accomplished in Turkish by the use of the verbal nouns with suffixes {-(y)acak}, {-d1k} and {-mal: BUlent babaS1n1n da oyle gen~ oldu~unu soyledi. 1steseler ona yeti~ebileceklerini soyledi. Bulent said [that] his father was also similarly young. He said [that] if they wished they could make that [one].
Note that the verbal noun with {-(y)acak} is used where the action spoken about is still in the future, that {-d1k} is used for any past or current action and that {-mal is employed where there is no indication of past or future time. Contrast: Onu gordU~UnU soyledim. Onu gorece~ini soyledim. Onu gormesini soyledim. Onu gordU~UnU soyleyece~im. Onu gorece~ini soyleyece~im. Onu gormesini soyleyece~im. I said [that] he had/has seen it. I said [that] he would see it. I told him to see it. he should see it. I said [that]
I'm gOing to tell him [that] he has seen it. I'm going to tell him [that] he is going to see it. I'm going to tell him to see it. 'I said
Note that the 'literal' translation of these sentences would be' his having seen it.', it. " etc. 'I said his being about to see it.',

After running a while Bob said' ,
This sentence illustrates a subordinate predicate form consisting of the verbal noun with suffix {-dik} plus the noun relational suffix {-dan} plus the word ~ verb', 'after' and carrying a denotation of 'after doing the action of the 'after having done the action of the verb'. The reverse of this structure
consists of the negative verb stem with suffix l-ma~ plus {-dan} and the word evvel 'before'. Ko~madan evvel, Bob' ..••' dedi. Before running Bob said '...•'.
This latter form of the verb also occurs without the word evvel in the sense of 'without doing the action of the verb'. Ko~madan yeti~emeyiz. We won't be able to make it without running.
1Note the use here of bir in an adverbial sense; 'once'. A more literal translation of the sentence might be 'Just once give Ahmet a call.', but bir is used in this kind of sentence often where a translation of 'once' would be awkward or would give a connotation of impatience which is not there in the Turkish. The use of bir adds to the casual, 'just on this occasion' , connotation of the structure here being drilled. It is also used with other verbal forms, chiefly in the imperative, with a similarly casual, off-handed connotation: Abmet, buraya bir gelmez misin? 'Ahmet, won't you just come here (once)?'
