strategic locations around Pakistan.

Health

• Since the beginning of the operation, the International Red Cross and Red
Crescent Movement has provided basic health care for almost half a million
people in NWFP and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

• Mobile health teams continue to travel throughout NWFP, delivering health care
and health education to up to 2,000 people each week.

• Almost 60,000 people have received psychosocial support. Initially 27,000

people in relief camps received assistance. As people returned home the
programme targeted 32,000 people across 23 villages in Balakot, Batagram and
Allai Valley. The Psychosocial Support Programme is run by the Danish Red
Cross and funded by the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid Department
(ECHO).

repaired or rehabilitated by Pakistan Red Crescent/International Federation
water and sanitation teams.

• The International Federation and PRCS water and sanitation teams have worked
with communities in Balakot, Batagram and Allai to construct approximately
2,600 latrines and 305 washrooms.

• During the emergency relief phase, a water purification unit, established by the
Swedish and Austrian Red Cross Societies in Balakot provided 210,000 litres of
water per day for 15,000 people from October 2005 to July 2006. Another unit
in Batagram, set up by the German and Austrian Red Cross Societies, provided

Recovery/Reconstruction

• A total of 42 reconstruction projects of public buildings is being undertaken.

Nine are underway and 25 building sites will be in progress by the end of 2007.
The projects supported by the PRCS, International Federation and other partners
are spread across NWFP and Pakistan Administered Kashmir. Of these, 28 are
reconstruction of educational and health facilities destroyed or damaged by the
quake. There are also plans for the construction of 14 community centres.

• Approximately 9,500 families in the Batagram and Mansehra districts (NWFP)

have received agricultural assistance such as seeds, tools and fertilizer.

Future activities present - 2009

• All 28 planned schools and medical facilities are scheduled to be completed by

the end of 2008 and the community centres will be completed by 2009.

• The PRCS and International Federation’s health programme will continue

running mobile health clinics. These will transition to providing more
preventative care and education until permanent health units become
operational. The health programme will continue to provide training in areas
such as community-based first aid, traditional birthing techniques for attendants
(midwives) and hygiene promotion.

• A further 39 water supply schemes are to be repaired/reconstructed by mid

2009, bringing clean drinking water to 160,000 people.

• The construction of a further 3,400 latrines is planned for 60 village

communities. The water and sanitation project will benefit 160,000 people by
the end of 2009 by providing them with improved access to sanitation facilities,
enhanced knowledge of hygiene and access to clean water.

• The International Federation will also continue working to build the capacity of
the PRCS through ongoing disaster management, health programmes and
support for vulnerable communities so that they are better prepared when
disaster strikes.

• PRCS volunteers will be recruited and trained in disaster preparedness/response

across various locations in NWFP. Assessments of disaster-prone areas will be
carried out to identify where the PRCS branch network needs to be strengthened
