1. (a) Write short notes on plane stress problem with suitable examples.
(b) Derive the material constitutive matrix for a plane strain problem. [8+8]
2. Derive the finite element equations from the one dimensional second order equation
by variational approach. [16]
3. Calculate the deflection at the center of the beam as shown in figure 3.
Take E = 220 Gpa; A = 40 mm × 40 mm. [16]

4. (a) Show that the shape function at node i (Ni ), for the simplex triangle is one
and zero at nodes j and k.
(b) The nodal displacements for the simplex two-dimensional element shown figure4b
are u1 = 2 mm, u2 = 6 mm, u3 = -1 mm, v1 = 4 mm , v2 = 5 mm and v3 = 8
mm. Determine the displacement components at an interior point B (10,10).

1. (a) Write short notes on plane stress problem with suitable examples.

2. With a suitable example, explain the physical interpretation of finite element


method for one dimensional analysis. [16]

3. A beam of length 2 m is fixed at both ends. Estimate the deflection at the center
of the beam where load is acting vertically downward of 10 kN. Divide the beam
into two elements. Compare the solution with theoretical calculations.
Take E = 2 x 10” N/m2 , A = 250 mm2 . [16]

4. (a) Derive strain displacement [B] matrix for a 3 noded Triangular element?
(b) The nodal coordinates and the nodal displacements of a triangular element,
under a specific load condition are given below:
Xi = 0, Yi = 0, Xj = 1 mm , Yj = 3 mm, Xk = 4 mm, Yk = 1, u1 = 1 mm,
u2 = -0.05 mm, u3 = 2 mm, V1 = 0.5 mm , V2 = 1.5 mm and V3 = -1 mm. If
E = 2 X 105 N / mm2 and µ = 0.3. find the stresses in the element. [8+8]

5. Determine the temperature distribution in a circular tapered fin varies the diameter
from 4 cm to 1 cm over a length of 1 m. The convection takes place on lateral
surface as well as tip. The conductivity of the fin material is 200 W/m K, heat
transfer coefficient over the surface is 980 W/m2 K and T∝ = 220 C. Assume base
temperature is 1000 C. [16]

6. Derive the elemental mass matrix for 1-D bar element and 1-D plane truss element?

7. (a) Name any three elements used in stress analysis of 3-dimensional problems.
(b) Describe the procedure of obtaining stiffness matrix by properly choosing
shape functions for tetrahedron element. [8+8]

8. What are different steps followed in preparation of preprocessing, processing, and


post processing stages using NASTRAN package? [16]

5. Explain the methodology for the treatment of all three boundary conditions in a
1-D heat transfer element? [16]

5. Derive the element conductivity matrix and load vector for solving 1- D heat con-
duction problems, if one of the surfaces is exposed to a heat transfer coefficient of
h and ambient temperature of T∞? [16]

6. Discuss the methodology to solve the Eigen value problem for the estimation of
natural frequencies of a stepped bar? [16]

7. Write a short notes on:

(a) Convergence requirements


(b) Mesh preparation for tetrahedral element
(c) Shape Function for tetrahedral element. [6+4+6]
