Outline
Introduction
What is MRI safety?
Who is at risks?
Term
• MR Safe – device that has shown no
additional risk to patient or other individual
but may affect quality of diagnostic
information.

• MR Compatible - MR safe and has no affect

on quality of diagnostic information and its
function is not affected by MR
Static Magnetic Field :
Site Access Restriction
Sign of MR Safety

Old ‘Warning’ sign New ‘Danger’ sign

• Outdated and simply  More prominent and
incorrect accurate
Sign Placement of MR Safety

 The door or
 The door that  Near the doorframe
entrance to the serves as so that it can be view
MR system exterior if the door to MR
entrances to system is open
the MR
environment
Projectile Accidents
• The most immediate danger associated with the
static magnetic field environment is the attraction
between the magnet and ferromagnetic metal
objects

• There is a STRONG fringe magnetic field around

the magnets

• The fringe magnetic field is confined to the scan

room
As you approach the magnet, the fringe
magnetic field gets STRONGER
Fringe Field

0.5 T 1.0 T 1.5 T

Radial (x and y) 2.1 m 2.3 m 2.4 m
Axial (z) 2.8 m 3.3 m 3.8 m
Projectile Accidents
• The fringe magnetic field can cause ferrous metal
objects (ferromagnetic) to fly into the bore of the
magnet with great force and speed
• Definition: ferromagnetic material as any ferrite
material (a mineral containing iron oxide that occurs
as small grains in a variety of rocks) that can be
magnetise.
• Stronger or higher the magnetic field, the velocity of
airborne projectile became greater.
• Paper clips, hair pins’ velocity 40mph @ 1.5T.
• Larger objects (scissors, etc.) have higher velocities and may be
fatal.

Cryogen Gases / Quench

• In the event of a system quench

– Evacuate all personnel/patient – as quickly as safely
feasible.
– Immediately restrict all individual form entering MR
scanner room.
– Cryogenic gases – partially or completely vented
(white ‘clouds’ or ‘fog’)
– Confirm that the magnetic field - successfully
dissipated before security/fire response enter the
MR room.

SAFETY
The need for an officer
safety should never be
questioned.
Administrators must
have a clear

ensure that staff
safety is the first and

GENERAL
• No person, whether patient, staff,
SAFETY ‘PAP’ or other personnel, who has
PRECAUTIO a cardiac pacemaker or other
N electromechanically activated
device, should be allowed into
the gantry room nor closer than
the 5 gauss line

(unless he has been specially cleared and

then only in exceptional circumstances).
