Warsaw High School Art Students

Highly Decorated at the
2011 Scholastic Art Awards Competition

Warsaw received 13 awards in the individual entry categories and 13 more awards in
the Senior Portfolio category at the 2011 Scholastic Art Awards Competition. The Gold Key
winners go on to be judged at the national level in New York. The recognition for individual
artwork is a great honor and having work on display at a well-known gallery is very
prestigious.
The individual students receiving Gold Key Awards are Miayah Olinger in sculpture,
Karla Batres in painting, and Haley Owen in ceramics. The Silver Key winners are Lauren
Gendron in photography, Molli Fisher in ceramics, and Karla Batres in painting. The students
who received Honorable Mention and whose work will be also displayed in the exhibit are
Elizabeth Ailes in ceramics, Allie Barringer in sculpture and digital art, Lauren Gendron in
photography, and Sarah Heagy in ceramics.
In addition to the individual entries, the seniors in Studio Art also submitted their
complete portfolios to be judged. This is a chance for students to pull together their finest
pieces and package them into a well-organized and thoughtful presentation of their body of
work. These are also used for scholarship applications and for entrance into fine art
programs. We are very proud that Allie Barringer, Karla Batres, Tim Engle, Miayah Olinger,
and Marisa Vogel earned Gold Key Awards for their portfolios. Silver Key Awards were given
to Teryn Armstrong, Haley Coppes, Ryan Disher, Malik Head, and Zachary Shumaker. Students
receiving Honorable Mention were Danielle Barker, Frank Marino, and Alyssa O’Neil. Warsaw
won more Portfolio awards than any other high school in the region! We are all so proud of all
of them for representing Warsaw so well at the regional and national level.
Along with these awesome accomplishments, two seniors were further recognized for
their work with special awards, given to only a select few whose work really impressed the

1
judges. Those winners were Miayah Olinger, who was awarded the Women’s Caucus for Art
Award, and Tim Engle who earned the Visual Voice Portfolio Award. This has been one of the
most successful years in this prestigious competition.
The exhibit was on display at the Warner Gallery at the South Bend Century Center.
Congratulations WCHS Art students!
