This is a verse by verse study of John, chapter 1, verses 1 - 6

John 1:2 & 3 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being
through him, and without him not one thing came into being.

Jesus has always existed; He is eternal. Jesus was there at creation. Genesis 1:1:
"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." Genesis 1:28 "God said,
Let us make man in our image, after our likeness." Who is the us in this verse?
Who was there creating with God at the beginning of the earth? It was Jesus!
Look back at the second and third verse of John. It says that Jesus was there in
the beginning with God, and that all things were created by Jesus. Of course, the
Holy Spirit was there, too; we don't want to downplay His importance. But this
passage in John is about Jesus, so that is who we will focus on.

All three persons of the Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit worked
together to create our world. What does this mean to us? Well, it shows us who
Jesus is. Jesus is God; Jesus and the Father are one (John 10:30). It also shows
us His power: He created the world and everything in it. It also explains His great
love for us: He created us, we are His children. And He loves us; if only we could
understand how much He loves us! Jeremiah 31:3 says: "I have loved thee with
an everlasting love..." Romans 8:39 says: " Nor height, nor depth, nor any other
creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ
Jesus our Lord." John 3:16 says: "“For God loved the world so much that he
gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish
but have eternal life." John 15:13 says: " Greater love has no man than this, that
a man lay down his life for his friends." Yes, God does love us, more than we can
ever know or comprehend. So on your worst days, rest in the knowledge that you
are indeed loved.

John 1:3-4: What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of
all people.

Along with God and the Holy Spirit, Jesus is the One who brought life into being.
Genesis 2:7 says "the Lord God formed man ... and breathed into his nostrils the
breath of life; and man became a living soul." Jesus was also participating in
creation; this is why John says that what came into being in Him was life: Jesus
breathed the breath of life into the first man.The life that Jesus gives is so much
more than physical life; in Jesus' life we find wisdom, love, holiness, happiness,
everything we need to live life as God intended. This life that Jesus gives is
indeed the light of all people (verse 4), if they will only accept it.
This light of Jesus' love shone on the first man and woman in the Garden of
Eden, but they chose to disobey and to walk away from God. You can find the
account of their disobedience in Genesis chapter 3. As a direct result of their
disobedience to God's command, they were banished from the beautiful Garden
of Eden, the place God had created for them, the place where they walked in the
presence of God Himself. They were banished into a world of pain and hard work,
a world unlike what they had known when they walked with God.

This is also what happens to us when we sin; we are banished from the
presence of God, just as Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden
when they disobeyed. There is only one way back into the presence of God, and
that is through His Son, Jesus Christ, who died on the cross as an atonement for
our sins. (The word "atonement" can be understood to mean "at-one-ment." It
allows us to become "one" with God.) We need to ask Jesus for forgiveness,
recognizing who He is and what He has done for us. Then we must live our lives
in obedience to God's commands. Accepting Jesus' forgiveness for our sins and
living for Him will bring us back into fellowship with God here on earth, and it will
also guarantee us a place in Heaven when we leave this world.

John 1:5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend
it.

The love of Jesus is a light shining in the darkness. This light continues to
shine in the world today, even though some refuse to see it. Even though some
people refuse to see the light of Jesus, they will not overcome it.
It does no good for people to deny the existence of Jesus Christ, the Son of
God; He exists whether people deny Him or not. It is like in our earlier history,
when the "learned" people of this world were teaching that the earth was flat.
They believed the earth ended where their vision ended, on the horizon. They
didn't believe anything existed beyond what they could see. But they were wrong.
There was the whole other half of the world beyond where they could see. Just
because they couldn't see it and they said it wasn't there did not change the fact
that it was indeed there. It's the same with Jesus; denying that He exists does not
change the fact that He does indeed exist. So which side will you be on? The side
that denies Jesus because they can't see Him from where they are or the side that
sees Jesus with the eyes of faith? Choose your side wisely; Jesus will still exist
whether you deny Him or not.

John 1:6 There came a man named John, commissioned by God.

This man is John the Baptist, the man described in the Bible as wearing camel
skin clothing and eating locusts. He was very different from everyone else. He
was different in the way that he dressed & ate, but he was also different in
another way: he was sold out for God, willing to do and say whatever God
commanded.
God is still looking for people who will be completely sold out for Him, willing
to say and do whatever God commands. And when a person becomes sold out
for God, they will start to look different in other ways, too. They will start dressing
differently; they will start talking differently; and they will start spending their
time in different ways than they did before. While John the Baptist is an extreme
example of what it means to let your life show you are living for God, there are
two truths we can learn from him: 1) that God expects us to live differently when
we make the decision to follow Him, and 2) that when someone tells you they are
sold out for God their life should show it.
