Specialization
Course Type Compulsory
Optional
Course Objectives 1. Familiarize student with Matrix Displacement
Method (alternatively known as Stiffness Matrix) of
different types of Structures (namely trusses, beams and
frames)
2. Communicate to the students the two approaches of
assembling Global stiffness matrix [K] of a structure.
3. Develop the skills of students to identify global
degrees of freedoms {U} for different types of structures/
their individual members and unknown internal unknown
forces {F}.
4. Communicate to students methods of defining load
vectors corresponding to the identified degrees of
freedom (alternatively known as global
displacement/deformations).
5. Develop the skills of students to identify and solve for
internal forces in different structural types and loading
systems using Matrix Displacement Method. These
including trusses (normal loading), trusses with lack of fit
problems (temperature changes, fabrication errors and
support settlement), beams with and without support
settlement and frames with & without axial deformations.
6. Familiarize students with theory of vibrations

Catalog Data This course deals with Matrix Displacement (alternatively

known as Stiffness Method) for structural Analysis and
structural dynamics (vibration)

Course outcomes 1. Review and identify force & displacement methods used
for structural analysis.
2. Identify degrees of freedom of different types of
structures and unknown internal forces.
3. Define local and global co-ordinate system.
4. Transform displacements from local co-ordinate system
to global co-ordinate system.
5. Transform forces from local to global co-ordinate system.
6. Define stiffness matrix for members of structures, namely
trusses, beams and plane frames
7. Transform member stiffness matrix (defines relationship
between deformations and forces) from local to global
co-ordinate systems.
8. Assemble Global stiffness matrix for structures from
individual members direct stiffness matrices.
9. Analyse different types of structures, namely trusses,
beams and portal frames, under normal loading
conditions and lack of fit conditions due to fabrication
errors, temperature changes and support settlement using
Matrix displacement method, alternatively known as
stiffness matrix method.
10. Derive Global stiffness matrix [K] of different types of
structures using holistic approach by deriving one
deformation matrix [B] for the whole structure (defines
relationship between local deformation (or displacement)
and global ones) for the whole structure, one static matrix
[A] (defines relationship between local internal forces
and global external forces) and one assembled stiffness
matrix [S] (defines relationship between local forces and
local deformations). K= [ASB]{U}
11. Single-Degree-of-Freedom-System (SDOF) : undamped
free vibrations, damped free vibrations, Forced Vibration
(Response to Harmonic Loading)
