CULTURAL PRACTICE FOR FRUIT VEGETABLES

( Squash, Gourd, Luffa, etc.)

A. Site Selection

1. Fruit vegetables e.g. squash, gourd and luffa can be grown in all types of soil
that is accessible to irrigation and is well-drained. However, the best type of
soil for the growing of these crops are loamy soils e.g. sandy or clay loam.

2. Be sure that the soil is free of harmful pests e.g. nematodes. If the area has a
history of the presence of pests treat the same with Furadan 3G or any equally
effective insecticide.

3. The soil must have a ph around neutral (pH = 6.5-7.5) and must contain
appreciable amounts of organic matter (at least 2 to 3%) within the first 40 cm
of top soil.

B. Land Preparation

1. If to be planted after the rice harvest use a wooden roller or a similar gadget
pulled by a buffalo or carabao to roll over the rice stubbles keeping them flat
to the ground.

2. Dig holes about 30 cm in diameter and about 20 cm deep at a planting

configuration of 2.0 m x 2.0 m. There will be approximately 2500 hills in
one hectare.

3. Place about 250 grams of organic fertilizer per hole then cover with 2-4 cm of
top soil. In one hectare 625 kg (12.5 sacks) of the organic fertilizer will be
used.

C. Planting Stage

1. Use the recommended varieties. For squash, the Nueva Viscaya and Nueva
Ecija (Aliaga) strains are preferred for commercial production. They are
sturdy being reasonably resistant against normal pests and diseases. The
yields are also appreciably high. For gourd, the market prefers the long one,
about one meter. For luffa, the one with ridges are recommended for food
while the one without is for cosmetic purposes.

Note: Gourd and luffa are both planted and allowed to crawl or climb on trellis
in order that they will bear more fruits and of better quality.

2. Soak the seeds for about 5 hours before seeding.

3. Plant 3 seeds per hill or hole, laying them in triangular position, about 15 cm
apart.

4. Cover the seeds with 5-7 cm of top soil.

5. Water the holes adequately but not to drench.

6. The seeds are expected to sprout within 4-6 days.

7. Side dress each hill or hole with about 20 grams of completed fertilizer (14-
14-14), at 20 days after seeding (DAS) at a distance of 5-7 cm from the base
of each plant.

8. Thin the plants by pulling one of the three growing seedlings. Select the
smallest one. On hills where only two seedlings are growing retain them
both.

9. Spray the plants’ foliage (leaves) with foliar fertilizer at 0.67% concentration
at 30 DAS and every 10 days interval thereafter.

10. Side dress each hill which have 2 plants with 20 grams of urea (46-0-0) or 40
grams of ammosul (21-0-0), at 45 DAS at a distance of 5-7 cm from the base
of the plants.

D. Additional Care and Maintenance

1. Cultivate the hills to remove weeds, if necessary.

2. Spray the appropriate crop protection chemicals following the manufacturer’s

recommendations. It is advisable to mix the pesticide (insecticide or
fungicide) during the application of the foliar fertilizer to minimize on labor
cost.

3. Harvest the crop at the right maturity to obtain maximum product quality. Do
not mix damage fruits with the good ones as this will encourage spoilage.
