Smoked Fish Ltd., of Mississauga, Ont.;
Pasta Romana of Montreal; and Point Star
Seafoods Ltd. from New Brunswick.
Meanwhile, animal transportation repeat
violators include Nadeau Poultry Farm
Ltd., of New Brunswick, which received
20 notices of violation with penalties
totaling $52,000. This company stands
out among the remaining eight listed as
repeat violations, which together total 14
notices, with penalties totaling $32,600.
In total, 196 administrative monetary
penalties were issued in the last three
quarters of 2010, according to the newly
posted information.

Outsourcing policy to
reduce operating expenses
Government has decided to outsource the
implementation of identified projects and
delivery of selected services to private and
non-state actors.
Permanent Secretary for the Public Service,
Mr Parmesh Chand said the ‘Outsourcing
Policy,’ is in line with the current reforms
being pursued by Government to bring
about cost reduction and efficiency in the
delivery of public goods and services.
He said the policy is intended to help
contain the size of the civil service and
its operating costs; improve efficiencies
in service delivery in terms of timing and
responsiveness; enable greater employee
participation and private sector led growth;
and to provide efficient and value for money
services to the tax payer.
The areas considered for outsourcing have
been divided into two categories namely
infrastructural/works contracts and service
contracts.

American Orthopedic
surgeons back
A team of orthopedic surgeons will be in
Fiji to operate on patients suffering from
club foot and hemiplegic.
Orthopedic surgeons from Shriners
Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii, have been
evaluating children.
Shriners’ Fiji co-coordinator Linda
Panapasa said the assessment days had
been extended to allow the surgeons to see
as many children as possible.

A strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck
off the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu on
Thursday, the US Geological Survey said,
but no widespread tsunami warning was
issued.
However, the Hawaii-based Pacific
Tsunami Warning Center issued a bulletin
saying the shallow quake could have the
potential to generate a local tsunami and
urged local authorities to be vigilant.

the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal since it
was launched last Wednesday.
And a partner of the appeal, the Australia New
Zealand (ANZ) Banking Group Ltd said it was

ANZ Fiji manager marketing Rosa Chute said
the appeal partners - ANZ, The Fiji Times and

“Before they used to do only one or
two days evaluation but now they have
increased it to three days,” she said.
“They can see from 50 to 60 children per
day.
“Last year, they saw 174 children in three
days including the special kids from the
schools and some from hospital referrals.”

A charity concert is also being planned to be
staged in Suva organized by young artists in the
Capital city.
A flyer being circulated said: “As young people
of the Pacific, we cannot just stand-by and watch
our cousins in New Zealand go through this”.
“As young artists, we also confess that we don’t
have the financial capability to give, yet we
have our talents. In realizing this a few young
people from around Suva are putting together
this benefit concert to raise money to assist the
people that have been affected by this terrible
earthquake,” the flyer stated.

Fiji concentrates on India and
China markets
AIR Pacific will consider direct flights
from Mumbai if visitor numbers increase.
Fiji has started focusing on India and
China markets to diversify its risks from
the two main markets of Australia and New
Zealand, which were affected during the
global economic downturn.
Speaking at the annual multi city workshop
held by Tourism Fiji recently, Attorney-
General and Minister for Tourism Aiyaz
Sayed-Khaiyum, said Fiji was keen to
build a relationship with India.
“We are keen on India and China as
markets with growth opportunity,” he said.
“With the Hong Kong - Nadi route
operating three times a week, connectivity
has improved and this will generate traffic
from India to Fiji.”
The main target markets that Tourism Fiji
is looking at from India are honeymooners,
families, FIT Free Independent Travellers
and MICE (Meetings, Incentives,
Conferences and Exhibitions).

Fisheries products from Fiji and Papua
New Guinea will now enter the EU market
more easily after the European Parliament
approved a trade agreement between
the European Union and the two Pacific
countries.
Fiji was de listed at the outcome of the EU
audit back in 2007 whereby PNG remained
on the list.
Head of the Food Unit, Mr Jope Tamani said
Fiji had not been exporting fish to the EU
market since 2008 to 2010.
“During that period we were losing out on
the market shares and foreign exchange
from the EU market. Getting back to EU
means a lot more market opportunities, lot
more investment opportunities and foreign
exchange earnings. There is a great deal of
opportunity for the nation as a whole,” Mr
Tamani said.
The EU regulation on fish and fishery
exports is one of the stringent or the toughest
worldwide.
The audit that was done in Fiji in 2007
found the whole system lacking from the
competent authority to the industry side.

Fiji received 620,000 visitors in 2010
compared to 542,000 arrivals in 2009.
The total number of Indian arrivals during
the period January-October, 2010 was
2,409, a 30 per cent growth from the same
period in 2009. The target for 2011 is 6000.
Air Pacific’s Asian regional general
manager Watson Seeto said, “We place a lot
of emphasis on our crew. You can sell hard,
but ultimately it’s the crew who interacts
with the guest and leaves an impression”.
“We have limited fleet - six aircrafts only.
India is an emerging market for us and with
us operating directly into India will depend
on how the feed to Fiji is. If numbers grow,
we can consider direct operations.”
Air Pacific is expecting an addition of a
Dreamliner aircraft to its fleet in two years.
“We haven’t even scratched the surface of
the India market. We are also in talks with
a couple of airlines in India for code-share
but, that again, will depend on the numbers
that are generated,” Mr Seeto said.
Mr Tamani said the whole chain was
basically out of control and Fiji had to earn
its place on the list.
“The de-listing is the outcome of the audit
done in September 2010. Fiji managed to
set up a system that met the requirements
and had to find our way back. We should
be proud as we managed to set up a system
and the industry managed to invest and
improve,” he said.
The economic partnerships agreement
provides for the elimination of tariffs and
more flexible rules of origin for various
food products such as fish.
Fiji is now waiting to get the first
consignment through. The EU is a growing
market and is stable in terms of currency,
better than US and Australian as they
fluctuate a lot.
“It should provide a lot of investment
opportunity to Fiji and export markets to our
country and boost the economy. This will
also increase the confidence of investors in
the fishery sector,” Tamani said.
He said 75 per cent of getting back to EU
was purely on the competent authority.

Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii
and the U.S. Coast Guard are also on hand

A team of plastic and reconstructive
surgeons will be in the country from April
11-15.
Their visit was made possible by the Rotary
Club of Lautoka in collaboration with its
international body-Rotary International.
The visit will see the team attend to people
who otherwise could not afford making a
trip overseas for medical treatment.
Arrangements have been made for the two
surgeons, accompanied by two anesthetists
and four nurses from Interplast Australia
and New Zealand to perform the treatment
procedures on patients at the Lautoka
hospital.
President elect of the Lautoka Rotary Club
Rick Eyre said the aim of bringing the
specialist team to Fiji was to treat the poor
and disadvantaged of the local community
who do not have the luxury of access to
such services.
The Lautoka Club is hosting the visit, and
the generous project is funded by Rotary
International.
The Interplast team has been coming to Fiji
for a number of years now and each time
have provided their services free of charge.
Man gets 6 years jail time for
chopping wife’s fingers
A 50-year-old man from Yako village
in Nadi has been sentenced to 6 years
imprisonment at the Lautoka High Court
after he was found guilty of brutally
assaulting and severely injuring his
29-year-old wife with a cane knife.
Emosi Tuigulagula was handed the jail term
by Justice Paul Madigan who described his
heinous act as “horrific”.
Facts of the case reveal that on June 9,
2010, Tuigulagula attacked his wife with
the cane knife after she did not respond
to his request to accompany him to their
plantation. His wife however, had been in
their bedroom attending to a phone call.
Tuilugaluga’s blows resulted in his wife
losing all her fingers except both her
thumbs. She also received injuries to her
limbs and head.

Poultry farm training for women

About 40 women in Nabouwalu, Bua had
the opportunity to receive skills training in
advancement of poultry farming.
The training has been facilitated by the
Ministry of Social Welfare, Women
and Poverty Alleviation in line with the
International Women’s Day celebrations in
Bua to enable the women to get first hand
information and training to pursue poultry
as source of income.
Senior Agricultural Officer and coordinator
for the poultry training, Mr Makalei Drauna
revealed that three primary purposes of the
training as follows:
- to understand the value of the income
generating projects, “what it means to you
and your family.”
-the need to have continuous motivation to
strive for quality and consistency in supply
-third being the required competencies and
empowerment of women in poultry as their
source of income
“Women need motivation and therefore the
participants are encouraged to realize the
value of any income generating to them
and their families while walking out of
poverty,” Mr Drauna said.
According to the trainer, there is a huge
demand for poultry in the Northern
Division with price ranging from $35 to
$45 for chickens in the Labasa market.
Lanieta Catanasiga, one of the participants,
who graduated from the School of
Agriculture last year, said she was
passionate about developing a poultry
business for herself.
“Women in Nabouwalu have lot of
potential in agriculture and I for one would
like to undertake poultry as a business for
myself. The lessons learnt through this
training have been motivational and we
have learnt skills on how resources should
be managed and using of natural resources
for chicken feeds,” she said.
Sharing similar views, Ema Vakabu from
Bua said the training had been an eye
opener for her in terms of the potentials for
economic growth through poultry farming.
“Back in the village, poultry is a source of
income for my family and through the skills
learnt I can now plan well in terms of using
cheaper means of running the business and
finding markets and all these skills will
help me to boost my family income. And
we thank the Government and the ministry
for providing the skills training,” Vakabu
added.
The Ministry of Social Welfare, Women
and Poverty Alleviation has targeted to
develop 15 poultry projects this year and
is pursing to develop a centre in Bua to
provide the ongoing skills training and
financial empowerment of women in the
Northern Division.

Tourism industry needs help from graduates

Three hundred and five (305) graduates
of the National Employment Center
were told by the Minister for Labour
and Education Mr Filipe Bole that
Government needed them to build a
productive nation.
“Government cannot stress enough the
importance of your role, in building a
productive nation that will make Fiji
competitive in the region and globally,”
said Mr Bole.
“We all know that as employment
increases in the nation, our economy
will grow, and our ultimate goal of
raising our standard of living will be
realized.”
Two hundred and thirty six (236) clients
graduated in tourism courses, while 67
graduated in information technology
and accounting courses.
The minister, urged graduates that their
talents and skills were needed to boost
the Tourism Industry in Fiji.
“With the tourism backbone in the
Western Division, it is my hope that you
will be absorbed quickly in the Tourism
Industry,” Mr Bole said.
He reminded graduates that this was
their chance of making use of their God
given talents.
“From this day on you have the chance
to be a role model and an agent of
change. In your hands, rest the final
success or failure of our course as a
nation. Fiji is counting on you to make
a difference in your lives, your world of
work, your families and our nation,” he
said.
Mr Bole encouraged graduates to market
their products and service through the
NEC EXPO, which was scheduled for
December 1 this year.
“You will need to develop new products
and services that can be showcased and
marketed to the rest of Fiji during the
NEC EXPO, which will become an
annual event in the NEC year calendar,”
Mr Bole said.

Price increase for local
wheat
AT least one wheat importer wants an
increase in prices.
Flour Mills of Fiji chief executive Ram
Bajekal says the increase in wheat had
gone from US $250 (FJ$465) per metric
ton to US$415 (FJ$772).
He said the increase in price of flour,
sharps and whole meal and baker’s flour
in October was based on September prices
of US$350 (FJ$651) per MT.
This after, the United Nations agency,
Food and Agriculture Organisation,
released its food price index, revealing
that cereal price index including wheat,
rice and maize rose by 3.7 per cent for
February alone, taking it to the highest
level since July 2008.

increased for the eighth consecutive month
in February, with prices of all commodity
groups monitored rising again, except for
sugar.
The monitored groups include cereal,
dairy, oils, fats, meat and sugar.
A report said only price speculation could
explain the 70 per cent from June to
December, 2010, when wheat stocks were

Mr Bajekal said the global wheat shortage
was only too well known.
“FMF (as indeed all flour producers)
obviously cannot afford to sell at the same
price for much longer,” he said.
“Much as we hate to, we will be forced
to seek an appropriate price increase from
the Commerce Commission.”

BUILDINGS in Fiji are built according
to the New Zealand building code, says
Nathan Kirk, the managing director of
Kramer Ausenco Fiji Ltd.
“We are following the New Zealand loadings
and materials code which is equivalent to
that of Japan,” Mr Kirk said.
“Engineers in Fiji design buildings to
withstand earthquakes but this comes at
additional costs to the end user. However,
the top priority for all engineers is to
safeguard human lives.
“This is why it is critical that competent
people design and build engineering
structures with materials of known quality.
“Also, the amount of damage inflicted will
depend on the magnitude and the distance

from the epicenter for a specific earthquake.”
Mr Kirk said the epicenter was close to
the surface in the case of the Christchurch
earthquake.
This meant there was a lot of damage
caused by the quake itself.
He said in the case of the northern Japan
quake, the bulk of the damage was caused
by the tsunami because the earthquake
was off the coast.
Mr Kirk said many of the damaged
buildings in Christchurch were old and
not designed according to modern codes.
Many of the buildings in Japan were
newly constructed and withstood the
initial earthquake but collapsed as a result
of the tsunami.

High flight cost affects resort owners

Resort owners in Taveuni are concerned
with the impact of high flight costs on their
business
RESORT owners on Taveuni raised their
concerns on the flight costs charged by
Pacific Sun, which they say has affected the
occupancy rate.
The resort owners made this known to Prime
Minister Voreqe Bainimarama at a meeting at
the Garden Island Resort last week.
Aroha Resort owner Dennis Irwin said many
tourists could not afford the flights from Nadi
to Taveuni.
Mr Irwin said the resort previously had a
high occupancy rate but after Air Fiji stopped
operations and Pacific Sun took up the route,
the rate had dropped.
“I’ve had tourists, including my guests,
complaining about the high air fares and it’s
so terrible to have such costly flights,” he
said.
“I had to lower the costs of operations and
services at the resort but at this moment I
can’t go any lower because I won’t be able to
pay for the expenses,” he said.
Pacific Sun says “the complaints against our
services to Taveuni are too vague and broad,
and thus the airline is not in a position to offer
a more useful and constructive response...”
Mr Irwin said most tourists preferred to travel
from Auckland to Nadi rather than Nadi to
Taveuni because of the very expensive flight
costs.
“It is so frustrating and they delay flights.
“I remember one time I had to go with my
wife to make a flight and we were told the
flight was cancelled.”
He said they reached Nadi Airport at 10am
and took a flight at 4pm.
“I understand that I could say it’s like taking
life from a baby bird which just got life few
seconds ago,” he said.

Tornado like weather hits Labasa assured of better

A 43-year-old woman and her family have
now resorted to sleeping on the floor after
strong winds they claimed was similar to a
tornado ripped through their home.
Bindra Mani, a housewife, confirmed that
they had to salvage whatever belongings
they had left to try and get a decent night
of sleep.
“This happened around 2 o’clock in the
afternoon and they were like tornado
winds, I am not a weather person but I have
never seen winds that strong.
“One moment they just came through the
house and took off our roof bringing in rain
and destroying everything in its path.”
“In the neighborhood of Vacegu settlement
four houses were badly damaged they’re
probably unlivable,” said Isikeli Turaga a
resident at the settlement.
“My roof had been blown away and I had to
look for bits and pieces of corrugated iron
to patch together to make a roof at least to
shelter my family from the rain and sun.”
Ms Mani and several family members were
home when the strong winds struck.
The winds ripped off the roof of the house.
She and her 30-year-old disabled daughter
suffered minor cuts and bruises.
“I’m 43-years old. I grew up here. I have
never experienced anything like this,” Ms
Mani said.
As she walked toward the house where
she grew up, Ms Mani pointed out a pile
of rubble.
It used to be a three-bedroom fully
furnished home but has now become
unlivable. Roofs were blown away and in
two homes the carports collapsed on the
family cars.
With her daughter safely out of the
neighborhood Ms Mani returned to collect
a change of clothing and her daughter’s
medicine.
“We have even started looking for
assistance and have gotten loans from
friends but I think what is important during
times like this is to have an evacuation plan
ready so we know where we can go,” she
said.

Government is set to decide soon on
the successful bidder to develop the
country’s first fully-fledged casino.
The confirmation has come from the
Attorney-General and Minister for
Tourism Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, who
said, “You will be informed soon on
this.
“We will inform you of the outcome
of the applications very soon.”
Expressions of interest for the
development and operation of
Fiji’s first casino were sought from
internationally successful casino
developers and operators by the
Government late last year.
Earlier, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said
the Government was looking at this
development as a means of attracting
more visitors and increasing the
length of visitor stay.
“This particularly from new emerging
markets China, Europe, and India as
well as building on the United States
of America market, which has a lot of
potential,” he said.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the economic
benefits from such developments
were obvious and this would create
another segment in the tourism sector,
create jobs as well as additional

Two new quakes rattle

Japan has been rattled by a couple of
aftershocks within minutes, causing
buildings in Tokyo to sway.

from leather and buckles to cover the

Ottawa announced it is sending two buses
to help earthquake and tsunami affected

Honda Canada is voluntarily recalling 3,636
model-year 2011 Honda Civics to inspect
and possibly replace a fuel pump module in

Air Canada cutting routes
as fuel costs rise
Montreal-based Air Canada announced
Wednesday it is cutting six of its domestic
and international routes because of rising
fuel costs.
Canada’s biggest airline said it would
eliminate Ottawa-Thunder Bay, Calgary-
London (Ontario), Ottawa-Washington
Dulles, Montreal-Washington Dulles,
Calgary-Chicago and Calgary-San Francisco.
The cuts take effect May 1.
Customers will be offered alternate flights or
routings, the airline said in a release.

Chicken in Lemon Sauce
Ingredients:
•1 Chicken, about 1.5 Kg

Directions:
Rinse and dry the chicken pieces. Put the
olive oil in a wide saucepan and, when
fairly hot but not brown, season the
chicken pieces and sautee them gently
on both sides. They should not get
brown. Remove them to a plate. Put the
onion in the same saucepan and sautee
until it becomes transparent. Add all the
vegetables and the basil and sautee for
a few more minutes, until they are all
coated in oil. Add the chicken pieces on
top of the vegetables and pour the lemon
juice all over. It is best to start with one
lemon and adjust to taste before you
add any more. When the steam from the
lemon has subsided add the water and
more seasoning, then cover and cook
slowly for approximately 45 minutes to
1 hour.
Serve the chicken and vegetables on top
of the pasta or rice and coat with the
delicious thick sauce.
4 green onion slices
2 tbsp. oriental black bean sauce
1 can chicken broth
Steamed rice
Directions:
Combine teriyaki sauce and garlic in
medium bowl. Add chicken and pepper.
Refrigerate for 30 minutes or longer.
Heat oil in Wok over high heat. Add
vegetables and onions. Cook, stirring
constantly about 4 minutes or until
tender. Remove the vegetables and
place in a bowl. Add a little more oil to
Wok and add chicken with the marinade
and the black bean sauce. Stir until the
chicken is cooked. Put the vegetables
back into the Wok and stir until heated.
Pour 1/2 cup of chicken stock into a
bowl and add 1 teaspoon of cornstarch.
Mix, add to chicken mixture and blend
well. If the sauce is too thick, add more
chicken stock. Serve over rice.

firmly believe you are what you eat.
We all have a routine we follow for eating.
Not every individual will eat the same
foods, however you can make healthier
choices in your diet.
Making those choices will impact your
health today, and just as importantly, will
affect your health in future.
Yet...Statistics show 65% of people are
overweight and 31% suffer from obesity.
Women’s health is at a high risk for heart
disease, high blood pressure, certain
cancers, diabetes, osteoporosis, and other
diseases.
The terms overweight and obese are
often considered the same thing. They
both refer to excess body weight, but the
degrees are different.
The Body Mass Index (BMI) determines
the degree of your excess body weight.
The guidelines are set up to determine if
you’re under weight, fit, overweight, or
obese.
A healthy diet and physical fitness are the
key factors to maintaining good health
and a healthy lifestyle.
Eating healthy is not always easy. The
temptations of “what’s easy to grab
and fix” is always right in front of you,
whether it’s at the grocery or as you’re
driving home past the fast food places.
It’s a matter of going back to the
fundamentals of good nutrition. It will
take some planning to start, but you can
find a healthy diet that fits your lifestyle.

I personally believe that the foods we
eat today have changed enormously
from what our parents and grandparents

organic foods, the benefits of organic
food encompass our health as well as
preservation of our planet in my humble
opinion.
Healthy Diet Recommendations
It’s easy to fill up on “empty calorie”
or “nutrient-poor” foods. When you’re
making choices, consider the following:
- Choose fat free, low fat and one percent
fat dairy products.
- Limit your fat intake and use hyrogenated
vegetable oil sparingly to reduce trans fat
in your diet.
- Choose foods lower in cholestorol and
keep your intake between 200mg and
300mg daily.
- Meats should be lean with very little fat
and poultry should have the skin removed.
- Cut back on added sugars such as
glucose, fructose and corn syrups.
Weight Management
You have worked hard, planned and
maintained a healthy diet, have lost some
weight or you’re now at the stage of
maintaining your weight.
What are the steps you can take to do
maintaining your weight?
Weight Management seems to be the
steps we often miss. After working so
hard to change your lifestyle, eat right and
accomplish a healthy weight, so many
people fail because they don’t make the
commitment or they don’t understand the
issues that caused the weight gain in the
beginning.
In order to maintain a healthy diet, a
healthy weight and a health lifestyle, let’s
take a look at some of the issues we face
today.
Weight-Management Strategies
It will take your commitment for lifelong
weight loss changes. The changes that you
make have to be because YOU want to
make them. Trying to please someone else
doesn’t usually work! Make the changes
for you!
Be proactive! Realize that you need to
deal with any problems you are facing
right now that may distract you. Making
lifestyle changes will involve a great deal
of physical and mental energy.
Do you eat when you aren’t hungry or do
you turn to food for comfort when you’re
stressed? Emotional eating and eating
disorders are becoming more prominent
every day. If you feel you have an issue
with either one, please consult your doctor.
Remember life doesn’t stop happening
because we want to change it. Things will
happen that may cause you to overeat or
not exercise one day. Address whatever
the issues are that got you off track…
then get right back on track and forgive
yourself.
Just remember the benefits of your
decision to do this. You’ll feel better, look
better and be healthier! Stay focused on
the long term goals.
Weight Management - Setting Goals
Setting goals, for me, is the hardest part of
doing this. You have made the decision to
lose weight, but you want to do it now, not
have to wait!
Losing two to three pounds per week is
the healthy way. Work towards this. Make
sure you’re getting enough calories to
sustain your health. Then add exercising
to help you burn the calories.
Set your goals to be “doable.” Otherwise
you’ll get frustrated trying to set a goal
that doesn’t work for you. Start with
eating right and exercising instead of
concentrating on “pounds.” Make your
weight management changes one at a

time.
Some of my personal tips for goal setting
are:
- First week: Give up two foods that are
“junk foods” or “sweets” and replace them
with something healthy. Plan two days to
exercise, exercise can be walking for 15
to 30 minutes, or whatever you like to do.
- Second week: Give up two more foods
that aren’t healthy and replace them with
something healthy. Plan three days to
exercise. Check your portion sizes, are
you in control?
- Third week: Give up three more foods
and replace them with healthy foods. Plan
to exercise three days but try for a fourth
day.
Setting your goals can be that simple and
easy to do.
Have a daytime planner you use or a
monthly calendar? Then all you need
to do is schedule it on that. You can use
that to track what you eat and when you
exercise. This is a good reference for you
to see what you have accomplished and to
set the next week’s goals.
If you do better by planning more long
term goals with the short term goals…
then plan them out for weekly, monthly
and for six months. Remember to make
them doable!
Weight Management - A Balanced Diet
and Exercise Plan
You can lose weight slowly on a healthy
diet alone...but if you walk briskly for 30
minutes each day/4 days a week, you can
double your rate of weight loss.
You need a healthy balanced diet
especially when you reduce calories. That
doesn’t mean you’re giving up good food
or taste. You’re simply going to replace
some of the “empty calorie” and high fat
foods with more healthy foods.
Keep your calorie intake at 1200 calories
per day or more if required for your
personal needs. Otherwise you lose the
nutrients your body needs to maintain
good health.
If you haven’t been physically active,
start your exercise slowly and gradually
increase your pace.
Weight Management - Achieving A
Healthy Lifestyle
Although losing weight is your goal,
remember...to keep the weight off you
must make changes that will work long-
term. Weight management strategies are
the key to changing your habits, losing
weight and maintaining that weight loss.
It takes planning and patience to
implement a good habit. Don’t expect
everything to happen over night and don’t
get discouraged if you get off track.
Keep on track and stay motivated using
healthy dieting tips.
Beware of diet myths. There are many
unfounded diet myths out there and they
can be harmful to your health.

Earthquake shakes
Quebec, Ontario
A minor earthquake has been reported in
western Quebec, with tremors extending
from the greater Montreal region to Ottawa.
Natural Resources Canada confirmed the
quake’s epicenter was in Hawkesbury, Ont.
Its magnitude was initially reported at 4.3,
though the United States Geological Survey
later measured it at only 3.7.
The Canadian agency initially reported the
quake was centered in Lachute, Que., about
80 kilometers northwest of Montreal.
The quake struck Wednesday at 1:36 p.m.
Tremors were reported in the Laurentians,
across Montreal, in Cornwall, and in
Ottawa.
“I was sitting on my couch and all of a
sudden I hear this noise which is boum,
boum, boum, boum,” said Feely Antipas,
who lives in Morin Heights, Que.
“I thought it was a big [boulder] coming from
a big mountain, going down the hill. The

noise when it stopped it was very strong.”
The ground started shaking and stopped
after about 10 seconds.
In Grenville, Que., elementary school
teacher Audra Goorbarry was in her
classroom with her Grade 5 and 6 students
when the quake struck.
“The children were sitting at their desks
and on the floor reading quietly,” Goorbarry
said.
“Then the expressions on their faces
changed immediately, and some of them
screamed out, and some of them covered
their mouths. And there were a few
aftershocks, so they were really excited
about the rumbling after.”
Pascal Provost said he felt the quake at his
home in Repentigny around 1:30 p.m. ET.
“My house complained a little bit and my
cat looked like it saw a ghost,” Provost told
the reporter.
Canadian medical team
pulls out of Japan
The unstable nuclear threat in Japan has
forced a Canadian Medical Assistance
Team from B.C. to return home, just three
days after flying in.
The seven members of the team said on
their website Wednesday that they’re
simply not equipped to work in a nuclear
emergency.
Members of the team, which includes five
Canadians and two Americans, arrived at
the Vancouver International Airport on
Wednesday morning.
Team chair Valerie Rzepka, who is based
in Canada, says the team made the call
after Japanese officials temporarily pulled
staff from a nuclear reactor site earlier on
Wednesday.
“We made the decision to bring the
team home temporarily in the event of a
catastrophe and we’ll continue to monitor,”
she said. ‘

Not equipped for nuclear threat
“Some frustrating circumstances have
arisen,” said the team’s website. “Within the
last hour, it was confirmed that Emergency
Operations at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear
Power plant have been suspended, and a fire
erupted in the outer portion of the No. 4
reactor unit’s containment vessel. Radiation
levels may rise to a potentially high level.”
The team’s job was to travel to areas affected
by the recent earthquake and tsunami and
report back to teams in North America to
co-ordinate the rollout of further volunteer
efforts. The Canadian contingent includes
three paramedics, a search-and-rescue expert
and a photojournalist.
Team members made some contacts and did
as much as they could before withdrawing,
the website said.

intelligence gathered, CMAT will continue
to monitor, with hopes to redeploy once the

murderer may be in BC
An escaped murderer who police say is
armed and extremely dangerous may be
in British Columbia.
William Bicknell, who was serving time for
the 2001 murder of Maple Ridge resident
Angela Steer, was on a temporary absence
pass from the Drumheller Institution
northeast of Calgary when he performed a
daring escape last week.
The 42-year-old held a Correctional
Services employee hostage as they made
their way to Edmonton last Thursday.
Police say Bicknell drove the van to a
home north of the city, where he forced his
way inside and stole another vehicle.
Before he left, Bicknell disconnected the
telephone and threatened the men inside
not to call police. He left the guard behind.
He stole several high-powered firearms
and ammunition somewhere along the
way, although police would not say how.
His sister, Sandra Lynn Myshak, is accused
of helping her brother escape from custody.
Police say Bicknell visited Myshak earlier
in the day while he was on temporary
absence pass. She is facing seven charges.
There have been unconfirmed sightings of
Bicknell in Alberta and British Columbia.
The case
Bicknell was originally caught for
murdering Steer when he confessed while
talking to an undercover Mountie in a “Mr.
Big” sting.
Bicknell told the officer that Steer was
threatening to report his involvement with
the marijuana trade to police, and that he
dumped her body over an embankment in
Mission, east of Vancouver.
At trial, the 6-6, 500 pound Bicknell argued
he had acted in self-defense because Steer,
who was 5-4 and 130 pounds, struck him
first.
The judge, however, didn’t buy it,
convicting the much larger Bicknell of
second-degree murder and handing him
the mandatory life sentence with no chance
of parole for 10 years.

Ram Navami Rituals

Ram Navami is a sacred Hindu
festival celebrated with great zeal and
enthusiasm all over the country. It is
celebrated on the ninth day (Navami)
of the Chaitra month (first month
of Hindu lunar calendar) in ‘Shukla
paksha’ or waxing moon. This festival
is observed in order to celebrate the
birth of Marayada Purshottam Ram,
considered to be a form of Lord Vishnu,
one of the prime deities of Hindu trio.
It is said that, Lord Rama is not only
god but also the ideal figure for a human
being. He is considered to be an ideal
son, a doting husband, a mighty king, a
wonderful brother and a great father. On
the occasion of Ramnavami, not only
the people in India but also the Hindu
community living in the other parts of
the world celebrate this great day with
immense joy and fervor. Read on, if you

Rama Navami Traditions
& Customs
Pooja
On the occasion of Ram Navami, all
the devotees of Lord Rama worship
to appease him. All the members of
the family worship together, in order
to celebrate the auspicious birthday
of Lord Rama. The Pooja begins
with the establishment of the idols or
pictures of Lord Rama, Laxmana, Sita
and Hanuman. All of these Gods and
Goddess are then welcomed by lighting
diyas and incense sticks. Then they are
worshipped with the auspicious pooja
materials like roli, aipun, rice, water,
flowers, bell and conch and are also
offered scrumptious sweets. At last, an
aarti is performed and all the devotees in
the Pooja are sprinkled with holy water
as a sign of blessing and auspiciousness
from God. The youngest female member
of the family applies teeka to all the male
members of the family. At the last the
prasad is distributed to all the devotees.
Bhajan
Bhajans are also an important ritual of
Ram Navami Pooja. The devotees of
Lord Rama make the entire atmosphere
glow by singing the bhajans and
choupais of Ramcharit Manas. A holy
priest narrates the story of Ram Janama
(Lord Rama’s birth) to all the devotees
who observe fast on this day. Continuous
chanting of holy mantras and Ramnam
(Ram’s name) makes the occasion highly
religious as well as spiritual.
Fast
The followers of Lord Rama also
observe a whole-day fast on the festival
of Ram Navami. Many of the devotees
go for a fast on satvik food i.e. holy
food without salt and other adulterated
materials. However many of them also
observe a waterless fast (nirjal vrat).
Those who prefer to have satvik food can
have potatoes made in any form without
haldi (turmeric), garlic, ginger or onion.
Sendha namak (rock salt) is allowed for
usage in fast. While on a fast, the person
can also eat curd, milk, tea, coffee, fruits
and root vegetables. The Ram Navami
fast is opened on midnight if one has
observed a waterless fast (nirjal vrat).
Rath Yatra
On the occasion of Ram Navami, a Rath
Yatra or a chariot procession is also
taken out in Ayodhya, the birth place of
Ram. The Ram Rath Yatra also consists
of idols of Sita, Laxman and Hanuman.
The Rath Yatra is taken out by many of
the temples in the city and is followed
with the chanting of Ram Nama (
Rama’s holy name) by the devotees.
Many foreigners who are seeking
spiritual enlightenment also attend this
chariot procession as it is said to bring
spiritual enlightenment and good luck
forever in life.

and others. That way, they’ll see that you
are trying to get your homework done. And
when it is done, make sure you find time to
do something fun!

U17 ratchet up intensity

The Canadian Fijian U17 national training side has intensified
its preparation for the August tour of Fiji and New Zealand.
Technical director Sudesh Dayal said the U17 training is
coming along as expected.
“With only a handful of sessions under them, the players have
made a remarkable progress,” said Dayal.
He said the U17’s would be ready sounding the first whistle,
come August.
The tour would be the first off Canadian soil for the U17 side.
“This is the first time a U17 Fijian team has assembled. Never
before in history any focus was given to the youngsters and
their developments.
“We are doing this for the youths and not to cash in on the
glory,” Dayal added.
He needs every bit of community support.
New Zealand and Fiji are on the first leg of the planned
tour.
The Canadian Fijians would likely play New Zealand
Fijian U17 and Mangere United FC while in New Zealand.
Dayal said every effort would be made to get Australia
on board in the future so they could have a four nation
invitational tournament.
“Fiji, Australia, New Zealand and Canada would make for
a great U17’s rivalry,” Dayal said.
He is hopeful the Canadian Fijian U17 side would give
their opponents a good game.

Rua defends title against Jones

Light heavyweight champion Mauricio
“Shogun” Rua defends his belt against number
1 contender and highly dynamic Jon “Bones”
Jones. The betting line for the fight is -210
for Jones which makes Shogun the underdog
at +165. Jon Jones speaking on being the
favorite for the fight has proclaimed himself
to be “Too fast, too strong and too young.”
Shogun Rua in his response says “I often put
myself in the underdog position so I don’t feel
any pressure on me.” Jones in his own right
will become a champion one-day, but I myself
don’t see it happening this Saturday. Jones
story is somewhat similar of Shogun’s which
many people seem to forget or don’t even
know about. Jones is 23 right now and is the
hottest fighter on the UFC roster holding the
longest reach in UFC history at an amazing
84 inches. His record is 12-1 with the one
loss as a disqualification coming from illegal
elbows. Jones has also finished 10 out of his 12
fights, with only 2 going to decision. The fact
of the matter is Jones has fought any top tier
competition yet. Ryan Bader was his supposed
“Hardest challenge” yet but even Bader wasn’t
close to a championship level. Shogun though,
is the prime example of what a champion should
be. Before Shoguns KO of Lyoto Machida last
May, he had his appendix removed, tore his
knee ligament before the fight and fought with
the torn ligament during the fight and he still
won! Since coming to the UFC Shogun has
stated he has never been 100% until now, and
fans of the Shogun from PRIDE can expect
the vicious, aggressive and explosive style of
fighting Shogun truly possesses. In PRIDE,
Shogun was one of the most feared fighters to
ever step into the ring. Known for his famous
stomps and kicks to downed opponents, Shogun
beat some of most dangerous and renowned
fighters at the time and in MMA history. Shogun
Rua KO’d the likes of Quinton “Rampage”
Jackson, Antonio Rogerio Nogueria, Alistair
Overeem and Ricardo Arona to win the PRIDE
Middleweight Grand Prix back in 2005. With
Jones being proclaimed as “The future” and
the most dynamic/hottest fighter in the UFC,
Shogun Rua is finally at 100% and looking to
finish the fight in spectacular fashion to show

Canucks’ Manny Malhotra out indefinitely, has

surgery on left eye
No word on severity of injury, as team calls
up Victor Oreskovich to take his place in
lineup
Centre Manny Malhotra had surgery on his
left eye Wednesday night, but the Vancouver
Canucks say they still don’t know how long he
will be out of their lineup or how serious the
injury is.
Coach Alain Vigneault said Malhotra was
scheduled to see an eye specialist later. He
would not speculate on the seriousness of the
injury, which occurred early in the second
period of Wednesday night’s 4-2 win over
Colorado when Malhotra was struck just above
the eye by a puck at centre ice.
“I couldn’t speculate at this time until the
specialist sees him and more tests are done,”
Vigneault said. “It’s too early for any of us to
speculate one way or the other.”
Vigneault did not offer any details on what
type of surgical procedure Malhotra had late
Wednesday.
“I couldn’t get into the specifics, I wouldn’t
know how to explain it,” he said.
While the details of Malhotra’s injury remain
fuzzy, the impact of losing him from the lineup
is crystal clear.
Malhotra, who was centering the third line, is
second in the NHL with a faceoff percentage
of 61.7 per cent. He is also a member of
Vancouver’s penalty- kill unit and is used on
many key defensive zone face-offs
“He means a lot to this team,” said defenseman
Kevin Bieksa. “There are so many things
he does on the ice that we miss. It will be
interesting to see how we do without him, but
we are definitely a better team with Manny
around.”
The Canucks recalled winger Victor Oreskovich
from Manitoba, but Malhotra’s injury leaves
them short at centre. There had been speculation
that the team might call up centre Cody Hodgson
and simply plug him into Malhotra’s spot.
Vigneault said salary cap space did not play a
role in the decision to recall Oreskovich.
“Right now we have plenty of cap space because
Kevin (Bieksa) is on long term,” he said. “We
thought it (recalling Oreskovich) was the right
thing to do at this time.”
Vigneault said he hasn’t yet decided how he
will fill that third-line centre position.
“I haven’t made up my mind,” Vigneault said.
“There are a lot of things going on up there and
the French guy is trying to sort it out.”

As part of decree number four of the Supporter
Pledge, fans are invited to participate in a
“Whitecaps Whiteout”, blinding the opposition
with a sea of white jerseys, caps, scarves, and
flags. To help the “Whiteout” experience,
white ponchos will be handed out to all fans.
Additionally, prior to kick off, there will
be 5,000 drums handed out to season ticket
holders wearing their scarf – which also serves

for films for decades. Consider
Battle: Los Angel updated assault
picture with all the right bells
and whistles. Sunny California
is not just known for surf and
sand, though that actually figures
prominently in this tale. Like
in Honolulu the west coast of
the U.S. has a sizable military
presence. Armed forces are
needed to protect America from
foreign threat. This film shows
that threats can come sometimes
from out of this world arenas.
Countless meteors have fallen
onto parts of Earth in recent times.
Scientists know this phenomena
is common. This time, however,
something rather sinister appears
from out of thin air. Without
warning some bad demons are at
work here and it’s up to the good

day. Call this a tall order in the

Back stories are important to
these sort of end of the world

a science fiction extravaganza.

Family Vacations: Some Dos and Don’ts
Heed these super hints for taking your
grandchildren up, up, and away
Let’s face it; traveling with grandchildren is
a whole new world. It’s nothing like it was
traveling with our own kids when they were
young. Then, travel was a breeze. It was mostly
piling in the car, with pretty haphazard advance
planning. All we had to remember was to bring
some snacks, and to seat siblings out of arm’s
reach of one another. On the road entertainment
consisted mainly of mind games and songs:
playing “I spy something yellow,” seeing who
could spot the most out-of-state license plates, or
singing endless choruses of “She’ll Be Coming’
‘Round the Mountain.”
Today, everything’s complicated, electronic,
and high-tech. Kids are attached to their own
individual video games, DVD players, and
iPods. Travel now covers greater distances and
reaches more exotic destinations. Naturally, more
sophisticated travel requires more coping skills.
Take flying, for example. What was once a simple
act of boarding a plane and settling in for a lovely
ride has morphed into an experience fraught with
dozens of potential pitfalls. Our adult children
have become experts in anticipating these
pitfalls and sidestepping them. I’m amazed and
impressed with their creativity, and have happily
adopted these tips for our own travels with the
grandchildren.

An earthquake is the vibration, sometimes
violent, of the Earth’s surface that follows a
release of energy in the Earth’s crust. This
energy can be generated by a sudden dislocation
of segments of the crust, by a volcanic eruption,
or event by manmade explosions. Most
destructive quakes, however, are caused by
dislocations of the crust. The crust may first
bend and then, when the stress exceeds the
strength of the rocks, break and “snap” to a new
position. In the process of breaking, vibrations
called “seismic waves” are generated. These
waves travel outward from the source of the
earthquake along the surface and through
the Earth at varying speeds depending on the
material through which they move. Some of the
vibrations are of high enough frequency to be
audible, while others are of very low frequency.
These vibrations cause the entire planet to
quiver or ring like a bell or tuning fork.
A fault is a fracture in the Earth’s crust along
which two blocks of the crust have slipped
with respect to each other. Faults are divided
into three main groups, depending on how
they move. Normal faults occur in response
to pulling or tension; the overlying block
moves down the dip of the fault plane. Thrust
(reverse) faults occur in response to squeezing
or compression; the overlying block moves up
the dip of the fault plane. Strike-slip (lateral)
faults occur in response to either type of stress;
the blocks move horizontally past one another.
Most faulting along spreading zones is normal,
along subduction zones is thrust, and along
transform faults is strike-slip.

caps. If one strays, you can point to the others and

security screener. If you get tagged for extra

DO create a “fun pack” filled with activities and
snacks for each child. Our unbreakable rule is
that this pack cannot be opened until the plane
is airborne. (The kids love this rule; it allows the
excitement to build as they anticipate what all the
fun stuff might be.)
DO keep a supply of antibacterial wipes on hand.

however, there is no guarantee that all the stress

relieving stress along one part of the fault may
increase stress in another part; the New Madrid

ICBC announces winners of 180
short-film contest
ICBC announced the winners of the 180
short-film contest at an awards gala held in
Vancouver.
The contest invited 19 to 25-year olds to make
short films about speeding, impaired driving
or distracted driving that would appeal to their
peers and make them rethink their risky driving
habits.
More than 110 talented young adults entered
the contest and submitted 124 films, totalling
almost 110,000 views on the contest YouTube
channel. Some of the films use humour and
music, while others are more serious and hard-
hitting, but they all have one goal in mind – to
help raise awareness about the power of choice
and making smart driving decisions.
“This contest and the films show there are many
inspiring young adults in our province who
have the ability to help influence their friends’
driving habits,” said Rich Coleman, Solicitor
General. “We congratulate all entrants for their
creativity and leadership in communicating
that road safety must be a priority at every age.”
“We’re amazed by how many talented
filmmakers got behind the lens to help promote
road safety, reach their peers in a meaningful
way, and potentially help save lives,” said
Jon Schubert, ICBC’s president and CEO.
“Because of the incredible quality of the films,
we’ll be featuring the winning entries in our
youth-oriented road safety programs this year.”

How to call 911
Once you have decided that the situation is

leave the injured person briefly to call for
an ambulance. It is important to phone for
an ambulance as quickly as possible to get
the ambulance on the way.
•Dial 911 – you can use a fixed, mobile
or pay telephone. 911 is a free call (even
from a pay phone).
What to expect during the call
Try not to panic. Talk slowly and clearly. If
you talk too quickly, you may waste time
repeating yourself. The typical call will
involve:

part of tooth care happens at home.
Brushing and flossing properly, along
with regular dental checkups, can help
prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
If you’re like most people, you don’t
exactly look forward to facing a
dentist’s drill. So wouldn’t it be better
to prevent cavities before they begin?
Giving Plaque the Brush-Off
To prevent cavities, you need to remove
plaque, the transparent layer of bacteria
that coats the teeth. The best way to
do this is by brushing your teeth twice
a day and flossing at least once a day.
Brushing also stimulates the gums,
which helps to keep them healthy and
prevent gum disease. Brushing and
flossing are the most important things
that you can do to keep your teeth and
gums healthy.
Toothpastes contain abrasives,
detergents, and foaming agents.
Fluoride, the most common active
ingredient in toothpaste, is what prevents
cavities. So you should always be sure
your toothpaste contains fluoride.
About 1 person in 10 has a tendency
to accumulate tartar quickly. Tartar
is plaque in a hardened form that
is more damaging and difficult to
remove. Using anti-tartar toothpastes
and mouthwashes, as well as spending
extra time brushing the teeth near the
salivary glands (the inside of the lower
front teeth and the outside of the upper
back teeth) may slow the development
of new tartar.
If you have teeth that are sensitive to
heat, cold, and pressure, you may want
to try a special toothpaste for sensitive
teeth. But you’ll still need to talk to your
dentist about your sensitivity because it

Tips on Proper Brushing
Dentists say that the minimum time you
should spend brushing your teeth is 2
minutes twice a day. Here are some tips
on how to brush properly:
•Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle
against your gumline. Gently brush
from where the tooth and gum meet
to the chewing surface in short (about
half-a-tooth-wide) strokes. Brushing
too hard can cause receding gums, tooth
sensitivity, and, over time, loose teeth.
•Use the same method to brush all
outside and inside surfaces of your
teeth.
•To clean the chewing surfaces of
your teeth, use short sweeping strokes,
tipping the bristles into the pits and
crevices.
•To clean the inside surfaces of your top
and bottom front teeth and gums, hold
the brush almost vertical. With back and
forth motions, bring the front part of the
brush over the teeth and gums.
•Using a forward-sweeping motion,
gently brush your tongue and the roof
of your mouth to remove the decay-
causing bacteria that exist in these
places.
•Use an egg timer or play a favorite
song while brushing your teeth to
get used to brushing for a full 2 to 3
minutes. Some electronic toothbrushes
have timers that let you know when 2
minutes are up.
Facts on Flossing
Brushing is important but it won’t
remove the plaque and particles of food
between your teeth, under the gumline,
or under braces. You’ll need to floss
these spaces at least once a day.

Diamonds are considered women’s
best friend, but it could soon become
a cancer patient’s best friend too-
thanks to a new study.
Researchers from the Northwestern
University in Evanston, Illinois, have
discovered that attaching chemotherapy
drugs to tiny carbon particles called
nanodiamonds could offer an effective
drug delivery solution for hard-to-treat
cancers.
The research shows promise because
anticancer drug resistance often causes
90 percent of treatment failure in
malignant cancer, reports Nature.
Nanodiamonds are carbon-based
particles between 2 and 8 nanometers
in diameter, with a truncated octahedral
structure. They are non-toxic and do
not cause inflammation. They are also
cheap to produce in large quantities.

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are

damage when people nearby fail to
recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can
recognize a stroke by asking three
simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE..

They found that nanodiamond-
doxorubicin significantly reduced the
size of tumors in mice and increased the
survival rates.
They also found that it reduced the
toxicity of the drug by releasing it more
slowly.
Ho said that the surface chemistry of
nanodiamonds is what makes them
special.
The diamonds’ facet surfaces possess
differing properties, such as electrical
charge. So a drug could be attached to
one neutral surface.

Sydney has most million
dollar properties
SYDNEY is leading the way in million dollar
properties, with more than 50 per cent of the
country’s most expensive suburbs located
there.
The latest RP Data figures reveal of the 212
suburbs with a median price of at least $1
million around the country, 56 per cent were
in Sydney, 20 per cent in Victoria, 12 per
cent in Western Australia and six per cent in
Queensland.
While the survey found Perth’s Peppermint
Grove is Australia’s most expensive suburb
for the third year in a row, Vaucluse came in
second.
Sydney’s Ku-ring-gai council recorded the
greatest number of suburbs in the million
dollar club, with 15 suburbs having a median
price of $1 million or greater. Sydney’s harbour
and beachside suburbs had 351 of the top 543
homes sold in the top 10 suburbs in 2010.
RP Data said the results showed demand and
price growth in premium property had been
strong.

A GROUP of asylum seekers has climbed
on to the roof of a Darwin detention centre,
an Immigration Department spokesman has
confirmed.
The private security firm that guards Australia’s
detention centers, Serco, is negotiating with
a group of Burmese asylum seekers at the
Northern Immigration Detention Centre in an
effort to talk them in out of the rain.
A spokesman for the immigration department
told AAP Serco was closely monitoring the
group.
“The detention services provider is engaging
with the detainees in an attempt to convince
them to end their action,” he said.
“Such action as this will have no bearing on
their asylum applications.
“Medical services are on hand should they be
required.
“Their safety is our primary concern.”

Aussies’ radioactivity danger ‘slim’
ANY chance that Australians near the
disaster-hit Japanese nuclear plants
had been contaminated by radiation

A WOMAN left her toddler alone in a
car for an hour while she went clothes
shopping, a court has been told.
The 28-year-old woman, who cannot be
identified, locked the two-year-old girl in
the car at Garden City shopping centre at
Mt Gravatt, in Brisbane’s south, on June 13
last year, the Brisbane District Court was
told.
Alert staff at a nearby shop called police
when they noticed the woman did not have
her daughter with her.
The court heard the staff member had seen
the woman leave the child unattended in
the car on a previous occasion.
Small earthquake detected
off the coast of Innisfail
A SMALL magnitude four earthquake
has struck off the coast of Innisfail in
far north Queensland.
Geoscience Australia seismologist
Jonathan Bathgate said the quake was
very shallow and struck off the north
Queensland coast just after 4pm (AEST)
on Tuesday.
He said there was no risk of a tsunami
or above average tides as a result of the
quake.
He said it was roughly 30km offshore
from Innisfail, 70km southeast of Cairns
and 50km from Gordonvale.
Residents in Gordonvale and Innisfail
flooded phone hotlines to report the
quake, Mr Bathgate said.
The earthquake lasted about four or five
seconds, sounded like distant thunder, and
had very slight tremors, according to a
caller from Russell Heads.
“Australia gets earthquakes across the
country on a regular basis, it’s just
coincidental that it happened on the
back of the Japanese and Christchurch
earthquakes,’’ he said.
Keith Fisher at Russell Heads said the
quake lasted for about four seconds.
“It sounded like distant thunder. There
was a distant rumbling,’’

Staff in Kennedy MP Bob Katter’s
Innisfail office reported feeling vibrations
from the quake through their desks.
Cairns resident Kathy Brown said the
sensation experienced by those in her
office at Smithfield, north of the city, was
similar to that caused by a passing heavy
vehicle.
“I was just sitting here and I felt it through
the floor and then my computer started to
shake,” she said.
She said she was shocked to discover the
shaking was the result of an earthquake.
“A couple of people who’d been through
one before said ‘that was an earthquake’
but I said ‘we don’t get earthquakes in
Cairns’,” she said.
“I wish it had been a passing truck, we’re
used to cyclones but we don’t need any
earthquakes.”
Twitter users have reported experiencing
tremors at Edmonton and Gordonvale
south of the city.
Innisfail experienced magnitude four
quakes in 1989, 1990 and 1974.
No damage was reported in the northern
region as a result of the quake.
An Innisfail police spokesman said the
quake wasn’t felt in the town itself.
Australia’s most powerful known onshore
earthquake was a 7.2 magnitude in
Meeberrie, Western Australia in 1941.

Gordon Campbell steps down as MLA
Former B.C. premier Gordon Campbell has
officially resigned his seat in the riding of
Vancouver-Point Grey, clearing the way
for new Premier Christy Clark to call a
by-election in the riding and run for a seat
in the legislature.
Clark has not officially confirmed that
she will seek a seat in the riding, but the
Vancouver-based politician has frequently
hinted it is likely.
She could call the by-election immediately
and hold it as early as next month, but the
law says the premier has six months to issue
the call.
No future plans revealed
Campbell has not revealed his plans for the
future, saying only that he intends to remain
in public life, but not in politics. There have
been rumors he is seeking a diplomatic
posting of some sort, but he has only said he
is waiting see what opportunities arise.

BC’s minimum wage is going up to $8.75 as
additional dollars annually for a full-time

forward in putting families first and building
our economy,” the new premier said in a

Chlorine needed to keep drinking
water safe in White Rock
White Rock used to be one of the few
municipalities in the region that didn’t add
chlorine to the water supply, but not anymore.
A report into last summer’s E. coli water
supply contamination in White Rock is
recommending chlorination as the best way
to keep the water safe to drink.
The contamination back in August meant for
twelve days people in White Rock had to boil
their water.
The report says it looks like bird droppings
were the cause of the contamination.

or some relationship for Campbell with the
federal government, Harper said had no
comment on Campbell’s future plans.
“Those are decisions for him to make,” he
said.
“I met Premier Christy Clark, and I’m
very hopeful that we will continue to move
forward in a productive relationship for both
the national government and the Province of
B.C.,” he added.

wage in the country, at $8.80.

contaminant got into the reservoir. “It’s a very

Having said that, it’s fecal in origin, which
is of concern that we need to address going
forward. In addition to that, there are no
disease reports that came out of this.”
Upgrades to the reservoir and water
distribution system are mostly completed.
An information session for the public will be
held in White Rock April 7.
Premier Christy Clark
announces cabinet
VICTORIA – Premier Christy Clark
announced a new, smaller cabinet focused
on putting families first, creating jobs and
changing the way British Columbians
engage with their government.
“Our new cabinet will reflect the
priorities of British Columbians and put
families at the centre of all our decision-
making,” said Premier Clark. “Together,
we will focus on creating jobs and
building a strong economy because that
is the single most important thing we
can do to support families and ensure we
can invest in critical services like health
and education. This is a team that will
work hard to ensure that prosperity and
opportunity extend to every region of our
province.”
The new cabinet is made up of 17
ministers plus the premier, reduced from
the previous total of 24. This includes
the new Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and
Innovation, which will bring together
many of the functions in government
focused on job creation under a single
ministry. As well, three new cabinet
committees reflect the priorities of
government – the Committee on Families
First; the Committee on Jobs and
Economic Growth; and the Committee
on Open Government and Engagement.
Responsibility for colleges and
universities has been recombined under
the Ministry of Advanced Education;
responsibility for mining has been
returned to the Ministry of Energy and
Mines; Labour and Citizen Services
have been combined; and Forests and
Lands has been combined with Natural
Resource Operations.

into office by the Lieutenant-Governor
