- Bilingual Education
The Bilingual Educators ESL (English as a second language) course was created to
address the special ESL learning needs of the Latin community here in Houston.
We have built an engaging, energetic, effective and practical ESL program specif
ically designed to provide Latino ESL students with a culturally-relevant, conve
rsation-driven environment that is created around their special learning needs.
Our program will challenge learners to acquire an understanding of the English l
anguage in the context of an intensive, structured conversational environment an
d to use the language they are learning within various types of active partner a
nd group activities. The focus of the program is to give our students a sense of
ownership of the English language: to be able to start “thinking in English”. This
program will systematically infuse students with the core foundational component
s of spoken English in terms of structure, mechanics, and pronunciation. This wi
ll enable students to go beyond the severe limitations of rigid, memorized expre
ssions, and instead, use those core components to spontaneously and naturally cr
eate dynamic language so they can genuinely communicate in English.Every student
will reach a “critical mass” of the English language by building their confidence u
sing the language effectively in any circumstance. Enabling the student to becom
e an active participant in the language on a daily basis results in their learni
ng it at an accelerated pace. Our program’s goal is designed and committed to help
ing our students get to that “critical mass.”
Empowering Graduates to start new Careers in America
Many of our students intend to pursue careers as bilingual teachers in the Texas
public school system. Some continue their education at an American university,
or obtain a job working in their original profession. In addition to being able
to successfully interview with prospective employers, upon graduating from our p
rogram, our students will have the language skills necessary to successfully ent
er alternative certification programs, allowing them to become bilingual teacher
s in Texas public schools.
Program Structure
The program will be structured with 6 levels that range from Beginner to Advance
d.
The subject areas that will be taught are:
Grammar
The grammar presented is considered to be the essential, core grammar that forms
the
foundation upon which is built the most common and fundamental communication in
English.
In our program, we emphasize the importance of seeing the relationship between g
rammar and spoken English, because grammar is the basis of spoken English, and a
deeper understanding of grammar will develop through learning and using it thro
ugh a spoken context. Therefore, our students learn grammar in the classroom by
applying it through various types of conversational exercises and activities.
Conversation
The conversation component in our program is focused on exposing students to pra
ctical conversational expressions through typical, real-life situations that can
be encountered on any given day. The focus is not simply on having students mem
orize basic expressions, but rather to expose students to the way Americans actu
ally speak. As the student progresses through this course, the student’s listening
comprehension skills and their ability to speak the English language will progr
essively improve.
Their confidence in being able to engage in spontaneous conversation with an Eng
lish native speaker will also increase. Students will be challenged to create sp
oken English in the classroom through constant practice via classroom group acti
vities and interaction.
Writing
The writing component in the program is focused on helping students
develop competent academic writing skills. Starting with simple, core mechanics
in the initial levels, this class systematically progresses with each level to i
ncreasingly complex mechanics. While also presenting important skills relating t
o other critical elements of good writing such as paragraph and essay organizati
on, logical division of ideas, transitions, and how to write for a particular st
yle such as a “persuasive” or a “comparison-contrast” essay. The ability to write well i
s a skill that is central to being able to obtain a good job.
