NEW YORK CITY VOTERS WANT TO SHOP AT WALMART 2-1,

QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL FINDS;
VOTERS BACK MERIT FOR COP, FIREFIGHTER, TEACHER LAYOFFS
New York City voters say 57 – 36 percent that elected officials should allow Walmart to open
stores in the city and say 68 – 29 percent that they would shop at a Walmart in the city if it were
convenient, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.
New York City voters tell the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll
they have conflicted feelings about Walmart:
• Agreeing 74 – 20 percent that Walmart’s lower prices would benefit New York shoppers;
• Agreeing 68 – 26 percent that Walmart’s lower prices hurt smaller nearby businesses;
• Agreeing 47 – 19 percent, with 33 percent undecided, that Walmart doesn’t pay enough.
More bike lanes are good “because it’s greener and healthier for people to ride their
bicycles,” 54 percent of New York City voters say, while 39 percent say bike lanes are bad
“because it leaves less room for cars which increases traffic.”
Republicans say bike lanes are bad 59 – 35 percent, while Democrats flip to 59 – 35
percent good. Independent voters say 56 – 39 percent that bike lanes are good.
“This is a union town, but New Yorkers will put their money where their mouth isn’t,”
said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
“Voters agree that Walmart can be tough on its employees and on its mom-and-pop
competitors, but even voters in union households say 63 – 34 percent they’ll shop there anyway.”
No Koch-borough Bridge
New York City voters oppose 64 – 24 percent renaming the Queensborough Bridge to
honor former Mayor Ed Koch. Opposition ranges from 53 – 32 percent on Staten Island to
70 – 20 percent in Queens.
“How’s he doin’? When it comes to naming a bridge after Mayor Ed Koch, not so
good,” Carroll said.

Quinnipiac University Poll/March 18, 2011 – page 2

A total of 89 percent of voters say New York City’s budget problems are “very serious”
or “somewhat serious,” and voters say 49 – 35 percent they would rather raise taxes than cut
services to balance the budget.
Abolish LIFO
New York City voters say 78 – 16 percent that if public school teachers must be laid off,
layoffs should be based on job performance rather than seniority. Even voters in a household
with a union member support this position 63 – 32 percent.
In fact, voters say 73 – 20 percent that layoffs for police officers, firefighters, social
workers and other government workers should be based on performance rather than seniority.
Voters in union households also support this position 57 – 35 percent.
Voters say 61 – 25 percent that New York City officials, not state legislators, should have
the power to negotiate pension benefits with city employees.
Looking at other budget issues, New York City voters:
• Oppose 67 – 27 percent layoffs for city workers;
• Support 45 – 40 percent furloughs for city workers;
• Support 61 – 33 percent a wage freeze for city workers;
• Support 50 – 44 percent reduced pension benefits for new city workers;
• Support 54 – 41 percent making government workers wait until they are 65 to
collect a pension.
“Almost everywhere that people are polled about tax hikes versus service cuts, they
prefer service cuts. Except in relentlessly liberal New York City. We’d rather raise taxes,”
Carroll said.
“Mayor Bloomberg’s push against that acronym, LIFO (for last-in-first-out), for laying
off teachers – and cops and firefighters – wins heavy support.”
By a 54 – 17 percent margin, New York City voters have a favorable opinion of public
school teachers and say 46 – 41 percent that the teachers’ unions play a positive role in
improving education.
From March 8 – 14, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,115 registered voters with a
margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.
The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public
opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio and the
nation as a public service and for research.
