Assignment 2 (Chapter 15)

1. Silo Simulation process 1

Task :- Complete the control circuit diagram as shown in Figure 2.8b for the silo
simulation process 2 according to the following conditions.

i) The silo must be opened when a push button (NO) is manually operated either
from the machine (S0) OR from the control panel (S1) AND the wagon is located
under the silo as indicated by a limit switch AND the main switch is ON.

ii) The presence and the absence of the wagon must be indicated by an indicator
lamp (H1).

iii) The operation of the silo must be indicated by another indicator lamp (H2).

iv) The opening and the closing of the silo must be actuated by means of a valve.

2. Silo Simulation Process

Task : Complete the control circuit diagram as shown in Figure 3.3d for the silo
simulation process 3 based on the following conditions.

i) The silo must be opened when a push button (NO) is manually operated either
from the machine (S1) OR from the control panel (S2) AND the wagon is located
under the silo as indicated by a limit switch 1(LS1) AND the main switch (S0) is
ON.

ii) The movement of the wagon can be achieved manually in forward and reverse
direction. Push button (S3) is used to move the wagon in forward direction while
push button (S4) is used to move the wagon in the reverse direction. The forward

and reverse movement of the wagon is limited by limit switch 1 and limit switch 2
respectively.

iii) Sensor 1(SN 1) is used to stop the silo when the wagon is full.

iv) The movement of the wagon must not be possible when the filling process from
silo is in progress.

Task: Design and assemble the circuit by means of correct symbols and
labelling according to DIN standard with respect to the following
conditions:-

i) The closing action of the gate must be accompanied by the sound from the
buzzer.

ii) The opening and closing of the gate will be halted by means of two limit switches,
limit switch 1 and limit switch 2 respectively.

iii) The operation can be achieved by using two push-buttons; one is for opening the
gate and the other one is for closing the gate.

iv) The entire process must be possible only if the main switch is on.

Controlling the Conveyor

Design and test a ladder control circuit for the Silo Simulator which will incorporate the following
Sequence of Operations:

• Start the conveyor when the Start Switch ([F2] key) is momentarily pressed.
• Stop the conveyor when the Stop Switch ([F1] key) is momentarily pressed.
• Energize the RUN status light when conveyor is moving.
• Energize the STANDBY status light when the conveyor is stopped.
• Energize FULL light when box is within the range of the photosensor.

Continuous Operation

Completely design and de-bug a ladder control circuit which will automatically position and fill the
boxes which are continuously sequenced along the conveyor. Ensure that the following details are
also met:

• The sequence can be stopped and re-started at any time using the Stop and Start

switches.
• The RUN light will remain energized as long as the system is operating automatically.
• The STANDBY light will energize and the RUN light de-energize whenever the system is
halted via the STOP switch.
• The FULL light will energize when the box is full and will remain energized until the box
has moved clear of the photosensor.

Container Filling with Manual Restart

Alter or re-write your program so that it incorporates the following changes:

• Stop the conveyor and energize the STANDBY light when the right edge of the box is first
sensed by the photosensor.
• With the box in position and the conveyor stopped, open the solenoid valve and allow the
box to fill. Filling should stop when the Level sensor goes true.
• Energize the FULL light when the box is full. The Full light should remain energized until
the box is moved clear of the photosensor.
• Once the box is full, momentarily pressing the Start Switch ([F2]) will move the box off the
conveyor and bring a new box into position.

Exercise #1 -- Continuous Operation

Completely design and de-bug a ladder control circuit which will automatically position and fill the
boxes which are continuously sequenced along the conveyor. Ensure that the following details are
also met:

• The sequence can be stopped and re-started at any time using the panel mounted Stop
and Start switches.

• The RUN light will remain energized as long as the system is operating automatically.

• The RUN light, Conveyor Motor and Solenoid will de-energize whenever the system is
halted via the STOP switch.

• The FILL light will be energized while the box is filling.

• The FULL light will energize when the box is full and will remain that way until the box has
moved clear of the prox-sensor.

Exercise #2 -- Container Filling with Manual Restart

Alter or re-write your program so that it incorporates the following changes:

• Stop the conveyor when the right edge of the box is first sensed by the prox-sensor.

• With the box in position and the conveyor stopped, open the solenoid valve and allow the
box to fill. Filling should stop when the Level sensor goes true.

• The FILL light will be energized while the box is filling.

• The FULL light will energize when the box is full and will remain that way until the box has
moved clear of the prox-sensor.

• Once the box is full, momentarily pressing the Start Switch will move the box off the
conveyor and bring a new box into position. Forcing the operator to hold the Start button
down until the box clears the prox-sensor is not acceptable.

Exercise #3 -- Selectable Mode of Operation

Alter or re-write your program so that the panel mounted Selector switch can be utilized to select
one of 3 different modes of operation. The 3 modes shall operate as follows:

• When the selector switch is in position "A", the system shall operate in the "Continuous"
mode of operation. This is the mode of operation which was used in Exercise #1.

• When the selector switch is in position "B", the system shall operate in the "Manual
Restart" mode of operation. This is the mode of operation which was used in Exercise #2.

• When the selector switch is in position "C", the system shall operate in the "Fill Bypass"
mode of operation. In this mode, the boxes will simply move down the conveyor
continuously and bypass the fill operation. As in the other modes, the Start and Stop
pushbuttons will control the conveyor motion and the Run Lamp will operate as expected.
