Course Description
This class is by special placement. The purpose is to identify students’
strengths and weaknesses in reading, to improve reading comprehension, and
to encourage reading for pleasure. It is our goal to have students reading on
grade level.
Standards
Reading – Students read a variety of grade level materials, applying
strategies appropriate to various situations.
Performance Standards
Tenth grade students performing at a proficient level independently read a
variety of materials: novels, short stories, and informational text. Students
predict outcomes, draw inferences, determine cause/effect, summarize key
concepts, and differentiate between fact and opinion. They distinguish
reader’s response and author’s purpose, analyze and interpret author’s use of
literary devices, and distinguish common themes through studentgenerated
work. Students analyze and interpret data.
Course Materials and Resources
Read 180 – A customized reading instructional program which includes the
following: software focusing in fluency, comprehension, & vocabulary,
audiobooks for modeled reading, independent reading, and direct instruction.
