Classification is a special type of certification particularly applied to confirm that the

maritime structures and facilities comply with requirements. Classification implies that
requirements are set by the classification society, i.e. the same third party that performs the
classification. The requirements are specified in the DNV Rules.

A key to safe shipping

In the development of modern maritime industry, ship classification has emerged as an
essential contributor to the safe-guarding of life, property and the environment.
Fundamentally classification is a very simple concept based on three main elements,
applicable both to the newbuild and operational phases,
1. Setting standards (Classification Rules)
2. Verification of compliance with standards (approval of specifications and drawings,
surveys and testing)
3. Documenting compliance with standards (survey reports, Classification certificates)
DNV's ship classification Rules are based on a wealth of experience accumulated during our
more than 140 years of history and extensive research and development programmes. Our
classification services are performed through our global network of stations and approval
centra, by systematically trained and well qualified surveyors, approval engineers and
experts, extensively supported by state-of-the-art IT technology.

Classification services
Our comprehensive classification service includes newbuilding, vessels in operation as well
as materials, systems and components.
Newbuilding
New ship design and materials, as well as the classification concept, are setting standards at
the forefront of technology and safety. These standards act as contractual references between
the newbuilding yard and the owner.
Vessels in operation
DNV offers quick and efficient service through our Customer service managers who are
acting as single points of contact, supported by our global network of offices in all major
ports. All our offices are manned with technically competent managers and surveyors
authorised to make decisions locally. Our Customer service managers are there to provide
safe and proactive support to your vessels.
Certification of materials and components
All materials, components and systems relevant to safe operation, quality of ships and mobile
offshore units.
Materials, components and systems
As part of classification, DNV also certifies all materials, components and systems relevant
to safe operation and quality of ships. Our design assessment, type approvals and production
assessments ensure that systems and components are fit for their purpose, and fulfil the
requirements of the DNV Rules or specific recognised standards.
Technical support
DNV’s activities on Certification of Materials and Components are operated by a staff of
some 150 dedicated specialists on the related technical engineering disciplines. This group of
people is located at the head office in Oslo, and organised in sections representing each
particular discipline. A brief description of the sections with contact information is given in
the links below:
• Communication systems
• Control systems
• Electrical systems
• Fire safety
• Lifting appliances
• Material technology
• Nautical safety
• Pressurised equipment
• Propulsion and machinery

Component certification means issuing a DNV certificate stating that the component
complies with the requirements of DNV rules. For the most important components onboard
DNV classed vessels, DNV component certification is mandatory.

In most cases, component certification takes both a design review and a survey/witness of
testing of the component.
DNV also offers certification of components with reference to other standards than DNV
rules, when this is required by the customer or otherwise agreed with DNV.
If you want your component to be certified by DNV, you should:
• Familiarise yourself with the relevant DNV rules.
• Make sure that the planned design and manufacturing complies to rule requirements.
• Call nearest DNV office to arrange verification of compliance.
