It was a hot day with temperature in the high 90’s that
open saw 19 players take on the challenging back nine and,
once again, the back side prevailed. For some reason, a
simple rearrangement of the tee boxes on the same nine
holes seems to make those holes a lot harder for
ATAGers as evidenced by the higher scores posted by
most of the players. Whereas last week’s front nine
produced individual net 5 under and net 6 under scores
and team scores of 10 under, 12 under, and a record
tying 16 under, the back nine limited the low net to only
2 under and the winning team score at only 7 under.
Photography Maybe it was the heat (did I say it was hot?), or as
open
someone suggested, the Hezbollah, but whatever the
Publisher reason, the back nine proved to be formidable. After
Nickelodeon drawing numbers to assemble the following teams, the
Publications, Inc match started promptly at 5:00 pm with all players, as
Since 2005 usual, having high expectations.

PURSE IN ONLY SECOND ATAG

Eaton, Gilmore, PROBE LAUNCHED!
Thornhill, Nichols New Ansley member Bill Buist, in only his second ATAG
appearance, won the $19 purse (note to Batelaan and
Benning, you one buck each to the pot) by recording a
self imposed 20 handicap score of 2 under. As a new
Ansley member, Buist does not have as yet an established
Ansley handicap, but does have an “internet kept” index
of 17 + at area public courses which was interpreted by
his team’s score keeper as a 20 handicap. Buist agreed
to keep the funds in escrow until the Handicap
Committee completes its own review which will also
include a criminal background check in view of the fact
that he was reportedly sponsored by Marty Arnold.
(Arnold later denied knowing him).

BATELAAN’S LOW GROSS NOT SO

LOW! GILMORE CLIMBS TO THE
ATAG TOP!
Ansley Tuesday Afternoon
Golf Tour The honorary Low Gross was won by Richard Batelaan,
Ansley Golf Club one of only two single digiters present, who had a less
1912 than impressive 41 including 5 bogeys to go with his one
196 Montgomery Ferry Dr birdie. At the other end, Richard Gilmore’s 42 on the
Atlanta, Ga 30309 front nine last week escalated to a 53 on the back nine,
putting him at the top of the chart, so to speak, for the
day’s match.

“They say that golf is like GOODING AND BATELAAN HAVE

life, but don’t believe SHOTS
them. Golf is more
complicated than that.” OF THE DAY!
Gardner Dickinson Doug Gooding and Richard Batelaan shared “Shot of
the Day” honors on the same hole but with different
teams. Gooding had back to back good strokes on #10
when his 130 yard approach shot landed within 10 feet of
the pin which he then putted into the hole for a birdie,
net eagle. Batelaan’s approach shot from a similar
distance on the same hole actually rattled the pin
before dropping within a foot of the hole for a tap in
birdie.

ONLY TWO BIRDIES!

The back nine yielded only two tweeters on the day—
one each by the aforementioned Gooding and Batelaan who
added to their cumulative total in the Birdie Club.

Thought For The Day:

What if there were no
OTHER TIDBITS:
hypothetical questions? • It was high drama while the Team 4 threesome waited to
see who their draw partner would be, needing help on
only two holes to escape the bottom. Ron the bartender was
tapped to pick the random number which turned out to be
Ron Majors. That turned out to be an unlucky draw for
More Summer Readingthe : beleaguered threesome as well as for Majors who followed
his front nine score of 40 the prior week with his worst
“How To Avoid The Water
round of the season with the big 50.
When You Lie 8 In The
Bunker”
• Two Glove Tom Thornhill, as a member of the Ansley
“How To Use Your Shadow grounds committee, again asked for suggestions to bring
On The Green To Maximize before the committee, the most popular of which was to
Earnings.” install a foot bridge in front of # 2 tee box to speed
up play by circumventing the need to walk in the line of
“ When To Re Grip Your Ball the players on # 1.
Retriever”
•Social activities were limited on this night as most of the
group dispersed early to seek relief from the heat (did I
say it was hot?), but the atmosphere was livened up a
little by jokes by Richard Gilmore, Don Nichols, and
Tom Kisgen. Opting to ignore the heat (did I say?) and to
stay into the evening to have philosophical discussions
were Doug Healy, Russ Jobson, Tim Martin, and Don
ATAG Nichols.
