GENERAL RULES AND CONDITIONS


1. All competitors and other persons attending sessions of the Eisteddfod do so at their own risk.
2. No late entries will be added to the official programme except in the case of error on the part of the Committee.

3. Competitors may appear only in their own age group except those designated open. Age as at 1st January 2011.

4. The Committee reserves the right to appoint a substitute adjudicator if circumstances require. In the interests of
fairness, performers who have had professional contact with the adjudicator during a period of six months prior to the
Eisteddfod are not eligible to compete.
5. Personal communication with, or representation to the adjudicator during the Eisteddfod is strictly prohibited. This
rule applies equally to competitors, teachers, parents, friends or other interested parties, and the Committee will
consider disqualification of any competitor involved in a breach of this rule.
6. A high standard of decorum is expected from all participants and spectators. Unsportsmanlike behaviour is contrary
to the spirit of the event and may result in the disqualification of the competitor.
7. The Committee will not be responsible for any infringement of copyright or royalty by individual performers or other
persons associated with the performance.
8. Any protest or objection of a technical nature will be referred to a protest Committee to settle, and its decision will be
final in all cases. Protests must be made in writing and lodged with the convenor, the secretary or other responsible
member of the Eisteddfod Committee within one hour of the conclusion of the item.
A protest will be accepted only from a competitor, the competitor’s teacher or the competitor’s parent, and must be
accompanied by a fee of $10.00 which will be refunded in the event of the protest being upheld.

9. The Eisteddfod Committee will decide upon any matter not covered by these rules and its decision in any question or
dispute will be final.

10. In all items, prizes may be withheld if, in the opinion of the Committee or the adjudicator, there are not sufficient
competitors to justify the awarding of the listed prize/prizes, or the standard of competition is otherwise not
sufficiently high, in the opinion of the adjudicator, to award any or all of the listed prizes.

SPECIAL RULES FOR INSTRUMENTAL COMPETITION


1) A COPY OF THE M USIC IS TO BE PROVIDED FOR THE A DJUDICATOR
Each competitor must bring a copy of the music upon arrival at the venue, for perusal by the adjudicator during the performance.
If original copies are given, it is the competitor’s responsibility to collect it after the section has been completed. All p ho toc opie s
will be dest ro yed. Music must be marked with the relevant section in which you are appearing and your competitor’s number as
per the official programme. Names of the competitors should not appear on music for use by the adjudicator. The Eisteddfod
discourages the use of playing from photocopied music and will accept no responsibility for breaches by performers as a result of
illegally copied music. Please complete AMCOS schedule forms to comply with AMCOS guidelines (included in the
Programme). Forms are also available at the front desk. PLEASE DO NOT POST MUSIC
2) THE AGE OF THE COMPETITOR
The age of the competitor is determined as at the 1st January 2011.
3) PIANO A CCOMPANIMENT
The Brisbane Eisteddfod does not have an official accompanist. Competitors must arrange for their own accompanist.
4) ENTRIES
♪ No competitors may appear more than once in any section, with the exception of the Chamber Ensemble section, where a
player may appear twice in the same section. However, two or more players from the one Chamber Ensemble cannot appear
together in another ensemble.
♪ Only one piece of music is to be played in any section, unless otherwise stated in this schedule and no piece of music is to be
played again in another section.
5) ON THE DAY
♪ Competitors are responsible for their own music stands and other necessary equipment.
♪ Competitors may be seated in the auditorium prior to commencement of section. The announcer will call a block of
competitors to the outside stage entrance
♪ No competitor will be permitted to appear at a time other than when the section is scheduled.
♪ Warm-up Rooms: These are located on the left hand side of the corridor. Please note that these are provided for quick
warm-up purposes only. Please restrict your warm-up time to 5 minutes maximum.
♪ Specified time limits for all sections will be strictly enforced. A bell will be rung when the time limit is reached and
the competitor will stop their performance immediately.

Notes for
Teachers & Competitors
Please note that there is NO SET WORK for the piano and instrumental section, all competition pieces are
your OWN CHOICE of work within the bounds of categories listed below.
SECTIONS DEFINITION
1. Strings: for any stringed instrument - violins, violas, cellos, double basses, harp and acoustic guitar.
2. Woodwind/Brass: for all woodwind and brass instruments including all kinds of flute, i.e. piccolo, fife, bass
flute, etc.; Reed instruments: all other woodwind instruments, e.g. oboe, clarinet, bassoon, bass clarinet, etc.
and also the recorder.
3. Piano: for acoustic piano only.
4. Graded level pieces: any piece of music at the grade level specified. Please confirm with your teacher if you
are unsure. Competitors must not have sat for a grade higher than stipulated. If there are not enough entries in
any graded section, then it will be combined with another graded section.
5. Chamber Ensemble Award: for 3 to 5 players with music from the chamber music repertoire for trio, quartet
or quintet and performed by single player per part. NB: It cannot be an arrangement or transcription. A single
player may perform in another Chamber Ensemble in this section. However, two or more players from the one
Chamber Ensemble cannot appear together in another ensemble.
6. Piano Solo Awards: (10-14yrs) + (15yrs & over) One piece of music is to be played. NB. Maximum time
limit for 10-14yrs is 10 minutes and a maximum of 15 minutes for 15yrs & over. If you choose to play a sonata,
then you are permitted to play more than one movement of that same sonata, as long as it fits into the time
frame specified for your age. Please note that a bell will be rung at the maximum time allowed whereby the
competitor is to stop playing immediately. Therefore, please be careful in choosing your piece to fit into the time
limit. Please note that no concertos are allowed in these Piano Solo Awards.
7. Instrumental Solo Awards: (10-14yrs) + (15yrs & over) One piece of music is to be played. NB Maximum
time limit for 10-14yrs is 10 minutes and a maximum of 15 minutes for 15yrs & over. Concertos are permitted.
Please note that a bell will be rung at the maximum time allowed whereby the competitor is to stop playing
immediately. Therefore, please be careful in choosing your piece to fit into the time limit.
8. Performance of a Queensland Composition Award: This Award is presented to the Performer/s only.
The competitor/s who perform/s are/is to choose a Queensland composition from the list on page 7. Please note
that a pianist can enter only once as a duet performer and only once as a piano soloist, but can appear as an
accompanist for as many pieces as they wish. However, the piece/s that the pianist is an accompanist for is
judged solely on the soloist the pianist is accompanying. It must, therefore, be stated on all entries for this
section whether the piano part is as a duet or an accompaniment. More pieces to choose from will appear on
our website www.brisbaneeisteddfod.org.au No more pieces will be added after 28th February 2011. Please
contact the Queensland composer for a copy of the music. The idea of this Award is to also promote up and
coming young Queensland composers who are aged 35 years & under. All pieces that are chosen by performing
competitors are recorded by 4MBS Classic FM103.7 and played ‘on air’ including interviews with the composers
of pieces that are performed.
9. 4MBS Classic FM 103.7: 4MBS Classic FM103.7 are offering to play ‘On Air’ the recorded performances of
the 1st place winners of the Piano Solo Awards, the Instrumental Solo Awards, ‘the Performance of a
Queensland Composition Award’ and the Chamber Ensemble Award. This will involve going to Grevillea
Studios, 26 Wallace Street, Albion for the recording. The studio is booked for Wednesday 18th May 2011 from
4pm-6pm. You will be given the opportunity to play your pieces twice through and choose which one you want
to go on 4MBS. These recordings will then be played ‘on air’ by 4MBS on a Sunday later in the year.

The Eisteddfod Committee reserves the right to alter or amend the programme in any way,
refuse to accept any entry, or to cancel any section in which entries are insufficient to
proceed, in the opinion of the convenor. In the case of sections which are cancelled for
this reason, a refund of the entry fee for those sections will be given. In age groups where
there are insufficient entries for competition, the Committee reserves the right to combine
age groups, similarly when entries exceed requirements the age groups will be separated.

NB: This is not a composition competition. The idea of this section is to promote young Queensland composers (under the age of 35) but the award will
go to the winning ‘performance’ of one of the pieces chosen below. Composers, whose pieces are chosen to be performed, will be invited to attend the
recording so that they can also be interviewed by 4MBS Classic FM 103.7. The adjudication announcement of winners will not be recorded and put on
radio, only all the performances and the interviews with the young composers.

All pieces that are chosen by performing competitors are recorded by 4MBS
Classic FM103.7 and played ‘on air’ including interviews with the composers of
pieces that are performed.

Note from present convenor: “Unfortunately,
I
won’t
be
able
to
run
the
Piano
&
Instrumental
Eisteddfod
in
its
entirety
this



year
and
future
years
because
my
personal
circumstances
have
changed
and
I
won’t
have
the
time
available
to
keep
it
running.


However,
as
I
have
been
dedicated
to
my
position
as
Convenor
over
the
past
6
years
and
feel
passionate
about
keeping
this
Eisteddfod

alive,
I
can,
at
least,
offer
to
convene
this
Eisteddfod
in
the
shortened
format
as
it
appears.



I
apologise
for
the
inconvenience
of

holding
the
Eisteddfod
early
in
the
year,
as
this
is
the
only
time
I
have
available.

year
(2012)

looking
at
holding
it
in

but

will
depend

Advertising space is available in the 2011 Instrumental Programme. All advertisements


must be with the Convenor by Friday, 1 st April.

Rates for Advertisements for 2011 Programme:


Full Page - $198.00 (incl GST)
Half Page - $154.00 (incl GST)

Donations each year help the Eisteddfod to recognise excellence of performances in terms
of awards and prizes. Cash donations from music schools, businesses and private individuals
are most welcome. Donations over $15 will allow us to purchase a section trophy or award
1 st place cash prize. Donations of CDs are also welcome. All donors will be acknowledged in
Programme.

• Announcing for the sessions
• Scribing
