What Ton AC Unit Should You Get?

Choosing the right size AC can save money

When selecting an air conditioning unit for your home, whether you choose a central
air conditioning unit for the whole house or a window unit to cool a single room, it is
important to get the right size for the job. Today, most air conditioning units are rated
in BTUs, or British Thermal Units, in order to consistently measure the energy used.
In earlier days, air conditioners were measured in tons, and many people still refer to
the size of a unit by its tonnage.

The right size

o A unit that is too big will short cycle, meaning it will turn on and off
too frequently. Not only is this inefficient, but it affects the ability of
the unit to properly dehumidify the home resulting in a home that is
less comfortable than it could be and utility bills that are higher than
they need to be. A unit that is too small will continue to run constantly
and may not be able to adequately cool the home. The end result is,
again, higher energy costs and uncomfortable living conditions. A unit
that is appropriate for the space you need cooled will operate
efficiently providing you with a comfortable environment in the most
cost effective manner.

Finding the right size

o There are two basic methods for determining the proper size for your
air conditioning unit - the professional method and the consumer
method. The professional method, also known as the Manual J Load
Calculation Method, involves taking into consideration the
construction materials used in the home, type and level of insulation,
number and size of windows, room sizes and many other factors. Few
lay people have the skills to make the necessarily calculation using the
professional method. The consumer method, however, is easy enough
that almost anyone with a basic understand of math can make an
accurate estimate. Determine the square footage in the room to be
cooled by multiplying the length by the width. If you will be cooling
more than one room, simply do the same formula for each room and
add the sums together. According to the Department of Energy a one-
ton unit is sufficient to cool up to 550 square feet of living space. A
two-ton unit can handle up to 1500 square feet, and a three-ton unit is
required for more than 2500 square feet.

Adjustments
o Most contemporary air conditioning units are measured in BTUs, a
measure of how much energy is required to raise the temperature of
one pound of water by one degree F. One ton of cooling capacity is
defined as the cooling effect of one ton of melting ice over a 24 hour
period. The conversion equals 12,000 BTUs to one ton. When
calculating cooling capacity add 4000 BTUs, or 1/3 ton, if the unit will
be cooling the kitchen. Add 10% to the total square footage for rooms
that receive a lot of exposure to the sun.

13*12*10

usually the height of 10 foot is not considerd while saying the tonnage of an A/C.

So 13*12 is enough to specify.

A 1.5 tonn A/C is enough to accomodate 250 sq.foot area.

Yours is only 156 sq. foot (13*12)

So 1.5 tonn is more than enough.

the power consumption of split and window a/c will be more or less same.

One advantage with split a/c is low noise and no need to break the window. a small
hole is enough to bring the water outlet.

In case of window installation will take about 2 days.

Price will be:

window 1.5tonn -- Least (voltas)10,000-12000

Split- 1.5 tonn -- Least 22000 (LG)

For selecting a proper AC you need to know several things, like

1. Its application, e.g bed room, class, laboratory, office etc etc.
2. The room to be air conditioned is under bare roof or there are room over it.
3. Location and number of doors and windows viz east, west etc.
4. Building material and its heat conduction coefficient.
5. Number of occupants.
6. Light load.
7. Any heat source present or not and its wattage.

Confused???

Dont worry for exact calculation you really need so many input. After all this is
engineering and engineers study the subject for 4years.

However, as a thumb rule I can tell you the tonnage requirement for such a small
room for residential application.

An 1.0Tr AC will be sufficient.

Regarding difference between split and window see the question answer in Yahoo
answer.

Power Consumption will be more or less same for split and window AC.

Cooling ability of window ac is definitely better than split.

Window AC is around INR10,000/- less costly than split AC.

You can go either for 1ton or 1.5ton.
Running time for 1.5 ton will be less.It will be slightly more for 1ton, that is the
difference.(Running time is like you set the ac temperature as 24deg, 1,5 ton will run
for 5 minutes and off, 1 ton will run for 10 minutes and off, this cycle will continue)

Best ac makes are Hitachi and Voltas.

hello there my room is just a bit bigger than that and i have a 1.5 and samsung is a
realy good one but make sure u get a a.c that has the energy star on it so it wont kill
your light bill i got one that dident have the energy star then i got one that had the
energy star and my light bill went down about 30 dollers good luck on your shopping
get it now before they get expensive

go with LG 1.5 ton a/c.

It is best for u r room size.
