EQUIVALENT LATERAL- FORCE PROCEDURE / ASCE 7-02 Sec. 9.5.5, Pg.

146
Design requirements for Seismic Design Category B & C (May use Simplified Procedure as permitted in 1616.6.1)
Design requirements for Seismic Design Category D, E & F
Regular structures up to 240 ft in height
Seismic base shear. The seismic base shear, V, in a given direction shall be determined in accordance with the following equation:

V = CsW ( Equation 16 − 34)

Where:
CS = The seismic response coefficient determined in accordance with Section 1617.4.1.1

W = The effective seismic weight of the structure, including the total dead load and othr loads listed below :
1. In areas used for storage, a minimum of 25% of the reduced floor live load
(floor live load in public garages and open parking structures need not be included).
2. Where an allowance for partition load is included in the the floor load design, the actual partition weight or a minimum
weight of 10 psf of floor area, whichever is greater.
3. Total operating weight of permanent equipment
4. 20% of flat roof snow load where flat roof snow load exceeds 30 psf.

Calculation of seismic response coefficient. The seismic response coefficient, CS, shall be determined in accordance with
the following equation :
S DS
Cs = ( Equation 16 − 35)
R
[ ]
IE
Where:
IE = The occupancy importance factor determined in accordance with Section 1616.2

R = The response modification factor from Table 1617.6

SDS = The design spectral response acceleration at short period as determined in Section 1615.1.3

The value of the seismic response coefficient, C s,computed in accordance with Equation 16-35 need not exceed the following :

SD1
Cs = ( Equation 16 − 36)
R
[ ]T
IE

But shall not be taken less than :

Cs = 0.044 S DS I E ( Equation 16 − 37)

For buildings and structures in Seismic Design Category E or F and those buildings and structures for which the 1-second
spectral response, CS , is equal to or greater than 0.6g, the value of the seismic response coefficient, , shall C
not
S
be taken less than
0.5S1
Cs = ( Equation 16 − 38)
R / IE

Where: IE and R as defined above and

SD1 = The design spectral response acceleration at 1-second period as determined from Section 1615.1.3.

S1 = The maximum considered earthquake spectral response acceleration at 1-second period determined
in accordance with Section 1615.1.

T = The fundamental period of the building (seconds) determined in section 1617.4.2.

Diaphragm force The diaphragm force at each floor ,Fpx, is given by Section 1620.3.3 as
n

∑F i

F px
= i=x
n w px
( Equation 16 − 65)
∑w
i=x
i

The force determined from Equation 16-65 need not exceed 0.3S
DS IE wpx but shall not be less than 0.15SDS IE wpx
