Smallbore rifle bullet drop using standard velocity .22 RF match ammo is ≈ 7 inches at 100 yards. This is ≈ 38 clicks up (6702 Anschutz rear sight) from a 50 yard zero1 with 1/6 moa
sights, and about 30 clicks with 1/4 moa sights. The trajectory of the .22 LR has a 2.7 inch (69 mm) rise at 50 yards (50 m) and 10.8 inch (274 mm) drop at 150 yards (140 m) when
zeroed at 100 yards (100 m).[4]
The RULES: (in no particular order, and subject to personal experience!)
1) Create a plan to deal with the prevailing conditions – observe before shooting starts!
2) Attempt to sight in under the prevailing conditions.
3) Predict effects and test to confirm your suspicions in the sighter. (In Conventional or NRA you MAY confirm changes using the sighter
bulls between record shots. In International events you may NOT return to test in the sighter bulls once record shots are fired.)
4) Fire for record only when the wind is in the quadrant that you sighted in with. The prevailing condition should be the quadrant you sighted
in with!
5) For smallbore ammunition always consider the elevation component with windage at a ratio of about 1:4.
6) Know your zeros and carry them mentally as you shoot.
7) A 6 o’clock wind MAY raise the bullet slightly, a 12 o’clock wind MAY drop the bullet slightly.
8) Always heed the UPWIND flag, the downwind flag is meaningless. Angleº / 20 ≈ windspeed (m/s) & Angleº / 3 ≈ POI deviation in mm
9) Shoot quickly – suffer fewer wind changes.
10) A let off can be more dramatic than a pick-up in wind.
11) Know the wind near the barrel – wind at the target is virtually meaningless!
12) A slight change from 3 and 9 o’clock should NOT result in dramatic changes to POI. A change in wind direction slightly from 12 or 6
o’clock can have dramatic consequences Shifts in these zones MUST be monitored VERY carefully.
13) YOU CAN ONLY LEARN HOW TO SHOOT IN THE WIND BY SHOOTING IN THE WIND!!!

Smallbore rifles have very nearly the same “zero” at 50 feet as they do at 50 yards and/or 50 meters.

Target Dimensions and Click Movements: (ALL VALUES ARE APPROXIMATE (≈) – THE ACTUAL SIGHT RADIUS OF YOUR RIFLE WILL
ALTER THESE NUMBERS SIGNIFICANTLY). The word “scoring ring” refers to the black area between the narrow white lines on the target. The
intent is to provide an approximate number of clicks to move the POI2 across the distance of ONE black scoring ring. Knowing this factor may help
new shooters achieve “zeros” more quickly, and help to more precisely determine the actual movement/click for their sighting system.

NOTE: For external adjustment barrel mounted scopes5 (Unertl, Fecker, Lyman Super Target Spot, etc.) the distance between barrel/scope
attachment points will affect the change in POI/click of the scope, the closer the mounts the greater the change of POI/click, the farther apart the
mounts, the smaller the change of POI/click. This principal applies to iron sights on “bloop tube” guns as well. The longer sight radius of the bloop
tube creates significantly smaller movement of POI/click6. The trajectory of the .22 LR has a 2.7 inch (69 mm) rise at 50 yards (50 m) and 10.8 inch
(274 mm) drop at 150 yards (140 m) when zeroed at 100 yards (100 m).
M • R/S = D or S • D/R = M 1 MOA = 1.047” @ 100yds or 3600”
M = movement of rear sight in inches w/25” sight radius & 6702 rear sight – 10 clks/rev
R = Range to target in inches 1/6 moa = 0.0012”/click (6702 = 0.0015” measured)
S = Sight radius in inches (measured from aperture to aperture) 1/4 moa = 0.00178”/click
D = Distance that Point of Impact (POI) actually changes in inches 1/8 moa =0.0008”/click
1/13 moa = 0.0006”/click or 0.015mm/click
Some typical barrel lengths and sight radiuses: (28.65” is the “ideal” sight radius with respect to achieving 1.00 MOA movement at the target)
H&R M12 – 28” Barrel, Anschutz Match 54 – 27” barrel, 33” Sight Radius, Anschutz Achiever – 22” barrel, 26 “ Sight Radius
TWO STEP FRONT SIGHT BASES: These offer a height difference of 0.054” from one step to the other, this is about the right amt of movement
to compensate for bullet drop from 100 yds to 50 yds/M and back again etc.

2
POI = Point of Impact, where the bullet(s) strike the target, hopefully a small group! The group is sometimes called the “cone of dispersion” COD.
3
Anchutz Achiever sights come standard as 1/6 moa, the short sight radius (≈ 26”) of the Ahciever accounts for the 1/4 moa figure.
4
The 7010 version of this sight is roughly 1/6 moa, or half of the 7020 version. Use the 1/6 moa values.
5
Not to be confused with barrel mounted Redfield 3200, or traditional receiver mounted internal adjustment scopes that have fixed sighting radiuses.
6
It is advisable to calculate the actual moa movement for each bloop tube sight radius.
