Paragraph for questions 16 to 18
Copper is the most noble of first row transition metals and occurs in small deposits in several
countries. Ores of copper include chalcanthite(CuSO 4 .5H 2 O), atacamite (Cu 2 Cl(OH) 3 ), cuprite
(Cu 2 O), copper glance (Cu 2 S) and malachite (Cu 2 (OH) 2 CO 3 ). However, 80% of the world
copper production comes from the ore chalcopyrite (CuFeS 2 ). The extraction of copper from
chalcopyrite involves partial roasting, removal of iron and selfreduction.
16. Partial roasting of chalcopyrite produces
(A) Cu 2 S and FeO (B) Cu 2 O and FeO
(C) CuS and Fe 2 O 3 (D) Cu 2 O and Fe 2 O 3
16. (A) Partial roasting of CuFeS 2 gives Cu 2 S and FeO. Iron is preferentially oxidised.
17. Iron is removed from chalcopyrite as
(A) FeO (B) FeS (C) Fe 2 O 3 (D) FeSiO 3
17. (D) FeO + SiO 2 ® FeSiO 3¯
18. In selfreduction, the reducing species is
(A) S (B) O 2– (C) S 2– (D) SO 2
18. (C) Cu 2 S + 2Cu 2 O ® 6Cu + SO 2
