Manava Seva Madava Seva

Namasthe
We all go to temples, pray for health, wealth and make different offerings and donations. Do you ever thought what is
happening to the contribution you are making there? Please log in to the website of Guruvayur Devaswom Board
(http://www.guruvayurdevaswom.org/notices.shtml) and read the reports for the year 2009. If you look in to the 3rd
Paragraph of the 2nd part of the report you can see a statement saying “400 Kg of gold taken from Devaswam stock and
send to Mumbai to make 344.895104 KG of pure gold and this is being pledged with SBI for an interest of 1.5% / year
for a period of seven years”. What does this says? If you take a price of Rs. 1900 / Gram, the value of gold invested is
(1975*1000*344.895104) 68 Crores (681,167,830). This is just gold from one devaswam board. It is estimated 300 to
400 crores is the investment by temples in Kerala in different banks for nominal interest rates. This investment is
growing at least by 10% every year.
What is happening in the other side:-
Education and health sector is two areas in Kerala where poor people are being looted by business interests. People are
struggling to get quality and cheap medical facilities, education became a business and poor people are not able to get
proper and quality education. Every year we have lot of problems in connection with entrance to professional colleges.
There are cases even students committing suicide because they can’t afford to pay fees. Scholarships, college and
school permits are distributed based on the caste and religion of students and management. A student who pays lakhs
as donation to get admission in a professional college became a corrupted person when he became a professional. A
student who receives a scholarship just because of his caste or religion will always treat people based on their caste and
religion. Here starts corruption and division in our society.

What can be done:-

Fund deposited by temples in Kerala in various banks for nominal interest can be used to start hospitals, colleges and
schools. This should be enough to provide free and quality education for all keralites irrespective of caste and religion till
professional level. This help to create professionals who are loyal to the society. This help reduction of corruption in our
society. This reduces the caste and religious discriminations in our society. People start thinking as one as they are not
treated based on their caste or religion.

Why Governments / Devaswam boards not doing it:-

All devaswam boards have schools under them, but they are just for name sake only. Devaswam boards are being
controlled by politicians and Governments in power. Politicians / Governments are more interested in creating vote
banks by dividing people and diverting these funds in the name of development projects and finally in to their pockets.
Politicians are very intelligent. They know that if there is problem then only people come to them and depend on them.
They create problem and solve them temporarily. They create a policy of distributing scholarships to students based on
caste and religion and smartly use this policy to create a vote bank in their favor. Schools and colleges permits are
distributed to caste and religious organizations based on the vote bank strength. Politicians know that if everybody gets
professional education then they can’t cheat people anymore and people will demand more from the Governments.

What we can do now:-

We need to realize that the money we are spending in temple by way of poojas and donations are meant for the
maintenance of temple. Gods are not interested in accumulating wealth. Gods are not interested to see the temples
steps gold plated or any other luxuries. There is no meaning in contributing more and more money to rich temples which
in turns reaching to the pockets of corrupted politicians. We should understand that MANAVA SEVA IS MADAVA SEVA. If
Government is not ready to take the responsibility of supporting the people using peoples fund let’s take the
responsibility. There are lot of charitable organizations across Kerala who helps poor people to come up in life by
providing them shelter and education. They are doing service to the society silently. They don’t have the support of any
politician, religious or caste groups. They are struggling for funds for their operations. Find below a list of charitable
organizations in Kerala with proven track records in their commitment to the public. Instead of donating big amounts to
temples, let’s start supporting them. Lets ensure that each and every Ruppe we are spending in God’s name make a
difference in our society.
