To be 1
El verbo 'To be' tiene una importancia especial en
inglés. Puede afirmarse sin temor a equivocarnos,
que se trata de la piedra angular de los verbos. Si
no se domina este verbo, nos resultará imposible
comunicarnos de manera efectiva y encontraremos
muy difícil avanzar en el dominio de otras formas
verbales. Así que merece la pena hacer el esfuerzo
para aprender a usarlo con total fluidez.

Equivale a los verbos españoles "ser" y "estar".

Dependiendo del sentido de la frase deduciremos
de cual de los dos se trata.

I am English / Soy inglés

I am in England / Estoy en Inglaterra

Veamos a continuación todas sus formas en el presente simple.

Veamos ahora algunos ejemplos.

 Soy maestro.* I’m a teacher.
Estoy aquí. I’m here.

Eres una chica. You’re a girl.

Estás en Madrid. You’re in Madrid.

Él es carpintero. He’s a carpenter.

Él está en Sevilla. He’s in Seville.

Ella es médico. She’s a doctor.

Ella está en Londres. She’s in London.

(Ello) es una mesa.** It’s a table.

La mesa está allí. The table is there.

Somos bomberos. We’re firemen.***

Estamos en Nueva York. We’re in New York.

Sois policías. You’re policemen.

Estáis en la calle. You’re in the street.

Son hombres de negocios. They’re businessmen.

Están in París. They’re in Paris.

* Aunque en español no usamos el artículo indeterminado delante de las profesiones, en inglés sí es imprescindible
ponerlo. Si en español decimos “Soy médico”, en inglés se diría “Soy un médico”.

** Resulta muy extraño ver la palabra “ello” en español en esta frase, pero en inglés es necesario el uso del
pronombre sujeto con el verbo. En español solemos omitir el sujeto en muchas ocasiones, pero en inglés el verbo
siempre debe ir acompañado por un sujeto. En este ejemplo, en español diríamos “Es una mesa”, pero en inglés no
se podría decir ‘Is a table’, porque faltaría el sujeto, así es imprescindible poner el pronombre sujeto indeterminado
‘it’ ‘It’s a table’.

*** En este caso no ponemos el artículo indeterminado delante de la profesión, porque estamos hablando en plural.
El artículo ‘a’ solo se usa cuando hablamos en singular. ‘I’m a fireman’  singular. ‘We’re firemen’  plural.

Haz ahora las siguientes oraciones. Luego practica leyéndolas en voz alta, solo
en inglés.

Aquellos son policías. Those are policemen.

Están allí. They’re there.

Estos son veterinarios. These are vets.

Están aquí. They’re here.

Soy alto. I’m tall.

Estoy aquí. I’m here.

Eres baja. You’re short.

Estás allí. You’re there.

María es una mujer de negocios. Maria is a bisnesswoman.

Ella está en Canadá. She’s in Canada.

Soy policía. I’m a policeman.

Estoy en Barcelona. I’m in Barcelona.

Juan y Andrés son futbolistas. Juan and Andres are footballers.

Están en Madrid. They’re in Madrid.
Él es médico. He’s a doctor.
No está en el hospital. He’s not in the hospital.

¿Es Andrés electricista? Is Andres an electrician?

No, él es carpintero. No, he’s a carpenter.

¿Eres maestra o estudiante? Are you a teacher or a student?

Soy maestra. I’m a teacher.

¿Está tu padre aquí? Is your father here?

No, está allí. No, he’s there.

¿La tienda está abierta o cerrada? Is the shop open or closed?

Está abierta. It’s open.

¿Estáis aquí o allí? Are you here or there?

Estamos aquí. We’re here.

¿Sois estudiantes o maestros? Are you students or teachers?

No somos estudiantes, somos maestros. We aren’t students, we’re teachers.

¿Son estos tus hermanos? Are these your brothers?

No, estos no son mis hermanos. No, these aren’t my brothers.

¿Eres tú mi amigo? Are you my friend?

Sí, soy tu amigo. Yes, I’m your friend.
