Segregation
From causes to consequences

When we learned about segregation in History class it caught my attention to learn about the
debate it brought to many people. Segregation seemed like an interesting topic to write about,
because it is not just history it is something that we see in an every day life. The consequences
that this topic brought are major. Society today may not be as similar as decades ago, but it is
defiantly still here with us today. It is very interesting to understand the causes of this topic, the
course it went through and the consequences that it brought to today.
My research involved a lot of books. We were not allowed to use the internet at the beginning of
our research so I had to get as much information from primary sources as I could. Using the
books I completed a total of one hundred flash cards about my topic. I used the flashcards to
write an outline followed by a five page paper about my topic. Once completing this task I used
the internet to find information I could not find in books.
I decided to a website. In creating my exhibit I gathered all of my research papers. Then I started
of with an outline organizing all of my ideas, from causes, course and consequences. Then I
researched for primary and secondary sources online making an annotated bibliography. Once I
had all the information needed I began to do my website.
My project relates to my theme because segregation is a debate. This case involves people
believing that blacks and whites should be separated in different schools, stores and churches,
thinking they would still be equal. On the other side of the debate many believe that separate was
not equal and wanted equal rights for blacks and whites
Thesis:
Segregation has been debated for centuries. After slavery was banished, blacks and whites were
not being treated the same, leading to many court cases in which African Americans demanded
the same rights that Americans had. One of these cases was the Plessy v. Ferguson case, in which
Plessy debated equality according to the thirteen amendment which states that nether slavery or
involuntary servitude would be acceptable. On the other side Ferguson wanted separated
facilities for whites and blacks. The final results were separate but equal, Ferguson had won and
separated schools, bathrooms and even churches were now legal, giving African Americans a
whole new battle to fight to gain full freedom. Many agreed that separating facilities was a
mistake because it led to discrimination and racism to African Americans.
This led to the case involving people believing that blacks and whites should be separated in
defferent schools, stores and churches, thinking they would still be equal according to the plessy
vs ferguson debate. On the other side of the debate many believed that separate was not equal
and wanted equal rights for blacks and whites. This debate led to the consequences of
The segregation debate in American history goes back to slavery. There was a large time period
in which Africans were imported to the United States to become the slaves of white
Americans. The African slave trade was a very brutal process. When slaves were brought
to the new world they were kept in barracoons, a farm yard for keeping animals in which
most slaves were intermixed with pigs and goats. Africans were being treated very badly,
even worse than anyone would treat animals. The voyage that brought Africans to the
West Indies and later to northern America was called the middle passage, in which
Africans they were cramped together in this boat and had less space than a coffin. They
were badly treated that many caught diseases and many did not make it alive. They lived
their last moments terribly, not getting the chance to say goodbye to their family. The
lucky slaves who did make it were not so lucky after all, as they were sold in auctions.
Being inspected from head to toe to make sure they would have the strength to do the
jobs no one wanted to do. Many people believe that this is not way to treat a person, and
no one should be forced to leave their families and home to serve someone else, just for
the color of their skin. Africans were assumed as less than every one else for being
simply different.
“I will say then, that I am not, nor have been in favor of bringing about in any way the
social and political equality of white and black races.” President Abraham Lincoln said
this words before he realized that slavery and many other issues were causing problems
between the south and the north. In the south slavery was legal and people did not see
anything wrong with it. In the south to them slavery was not a humanly thing to do and
they wanted to banish slavery. North and south could not resolve their problems by
talking and they believed that they could only fix their problems by having a war. In
1863 to 1865 the Civil war took place. President Abraham Lincoln now believed that we
should all live equally with out discrimination. In 1808 the United States stopped
importing new slaves from Africa; this seemed like a very bright step toward stopping
discrimination and inequality.
