Ch.2
Section 1 is entitled: The divine action is present everywhere and always, although it
is only visible to the eye of faith.
"All creatures are living in the hand of God; the senses perceive only the action of the
creature, but faith sees the action of God in everything..."
Caussade describes faith and its illumination in terms of the burning bush (p.51).
Section 2: We give ordinary people a better welcome when we see in them the King.
`...Similarly, the soul that sees the will of God int he smallest things or in the most
distressing and fatal events, accepts them all with equal joy, gladness and respect.' (p.53) C.
goes on to speak of the extreme poverty of the holy family in Bethlehem.4
`Hasten then always, faithful souls, happy and tireless after your beloved Spouse who
walks with giant's steps from one end of the heavens to the other; nothing is hidden from his
sight. He walks over the tiniest blades of grass as well as over cedars. he passes over grains
of sand as well as over mountains. Wherever you can step, he has passed, and in order to
find him wherever you may be, you have but to pursue him incessantly.' (p.55)
Section 3: `the present moment is always full of infinite treasure... The whole of the
created universe cannot fill your heart which has a greater capacity than everything else that
is not God. the mountains which affright your eyes are tiny as atoms to the heart. the divine
will is an abyss, the opening of which is the present moment. Plunge into this abyss and you
will find it ever deeper than your desires. Pay court to no one, do not worship illusions, ...
The sole will of God will wholly fill you... abandon all external appearances. the stripping,
death and destruction of the senses establish the reign of faith5: the senses adore creatures,
faith adores the divine will. Take away their idols from the senses... When the event of the
present moment terrifies, starves, strips and attacks all the senses, it is just at that moment
that it nourishes, enriches and vitalizes faith...'
Section 4: is entitled `God reveals himself to us in the commonest events, in a manner
as mysterious but as real and adorable as in the great events of history and the Sacred
Scriptures.'
Section 5: an interesting comment on the HS//Scripture: `When he assists the Church
in the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ, he writes his own gospel, and he writes it in

the hearts of the faithful. All the actions, all the moments of the saints make up the gospel of
the Holy Spirit. Their holy souls are the paper, their sufferings and their actions are the ink.
the Holy Spirit, with his own action for pen, writes a living gospel, but it will not be readable
until the day of glory when it will be taken out of the printing press of this life and published.
`What a beautiful history! What a fine book the Holy Spirit is writing now! The
book is in the press, there is no day on which the letters which make it up are not being
composed... But we dwell in the night of faith; the paper is blacker than the ink...' (p.61)
Section 7: entitled `Divine love gives itself to us through the medium of all creatures
which communicate it to us under veils, liek the Eucharistic species.'
`Does not reason, as well as faith, reveal to us the real presence of the divine love in
all creatures and in all the events of life as indubitably as the word of Jesus Christ and the
Church reveal to us the presence of the sacred flesh of our Saviour under the Eucharistic
species? Do we not know that by all these creatures and all these events, the divine Love
desires to unite himself to us... he uses, to attain this end, the worst as well as the best of
creatures and the most disagreeable as well as the pleasantest events... But if all this is true,
why should not every moment of oru livbes be a sort of communion with divine love
continuously producing in our souls the fruits of that communion in which we receive the
body and blood of the Son of God? the latter, truly, has a sacramental efficacy lackjing to
the former, but on the other hand how much more frequently the former can be renewed and
how greatly can its merit grow... How true that the holiest life is mysterious in its simplicity
and its apparently humble state. Divine banquet, perpetual festival... God ever given and
received under appearances of the greatest weakness and nothingness!... Of all things God
makes mysteries and sacraments of love, and gives himself to souls....' (p.65).
Section 10....`The present moment is always the ambassador who declares the order
of God. The heart always pronounces its fiat. The soul pouirs itself forth by all these means
into itscentre and goal; it never stops, it travels by all winds; all routes and methods advance
it equally on its journey tot the high sea of the Infinite. Everything is a means and an
instrument of holiness; everything without any exception....' The one thing necessary is `the
stripping, the self-abnegation, the renunciation of the creature in order to eb nothing by or for
oneself...' (p.68)
Section 11...`...shall I go and seek help from creatures who are powerless... I should
die of thirst running from fountain to fountain, from stream to stream, while here is an
engulfing sea which surrounds me on all sides with its waters! Everything becomes bread to
nourish me, soap to cleanse me, fire to purify me. Everything is a means oif grace...' (p.72-
73)

Section 4: `..To ravish God from a heart longing for nothing but God, what a secret of
love!' (p.127)

Of the paternal assistance with which God surrounds the souls
who abandon themselves to him
Section 3: `the more he deprives us of the natural, the more he gives us of the
supernbatural.' (p.140)
Section 4: `Since God is in all things, the use we make of them by his design is not
use of creatures but rather enjoyment of the divine action which dispenses its gifts through
different channels. these channels do nto sanctify by themselves but onyl as instruments of
the divine actions which can and frequently does communicate its gifts to simpel souls by
means of thinsg which appear opposed to the end proposed.7 In the hands of God, mud is as
transparent as light8 and the instrument he selects is always the unique means to his purpose...
Faith believes always that nothing is wanting...' (p.144)
Section 8: `...Thus self-abandoned souls do not bother about thei rinfirmities... The
languors and weaknesses of these souls are but illusions and phantasms which they should
defy with confidence. God sends them and permits them in order to give exercise to their
faith and their self-abandonment, which is the real remedy. Without paying any attention to
them, they should bravely pursue their way through the actiosn and sufferings of God's order,
making use of their bodies as hacks whose lives are valueless and serve for any job. So to act
is better than to indulge in those delicacies which injure the vigour of the spirit. Such energy
of spirit has the power to sustain a feeble body, and a year of a noble and generous life is
worth more than a century of care and fears.' (p.150)
