2008 CHIANTI DOCG

L A T RADIZIONE (The Tradition)

In the 12th century, a time when battles raged between Siena and Florence for control of
the fruitful Tuscan land, Castello di Gabbiano was constructed in the heart of the Chianti
Classic region, just south of Florence. Story is told that the Gabbiano Knight, or Caveliere
on horseback, protected the Castello di Gabbiano Estate from outside invaders. On the
label, the Cavaliere vividly symbolizes the robust charm and tradition of the Chianti
region. Today, this 252-acre estate of vineyards and olive groves is equipped with a
modern fermentation cellar, yet the wines are still crafted in the rich and ancient Tuscan
winemaking tradition by Giancarlo Roman, winemaker for Castello di Gabbiano.

I L V IGNETO (The Vineyard)

The vineyards providing fruit for the 2008 Chianti DOCG are located in the Chianti
region of Tuscany at average altitudes of 100 - 200 feet. The soil consists primarily of
sandstone, shale and sand, with lower layers of calcareous and marly. Throughout the
growing season, chief winemaker, Giancarlo Roman, worked with the vineyard team to
meticulously maintain the vines, ensuring optimum quality.

The 2008 growing season began with a rainy spring, which delayed fruit set. However, the
sunny, warm weather during July, August and September allowed for near perfect growing
conditions and enabled rich flowering and fruit set. The resulting crop was abundant with
high quality, flavorful fruit. An excellent vintage.

I L V INO (The Wine)

The juice was vinified on the skins in stainless-steel tanks for 10 days at controlled
temperatures of 28-30°C (about 82-86°F). To extract color and flavor and enhance
texture, pump-overs were performed three times daily. One hundred percent malolactic
fermentation was completed after 20-25 days. Before bottling, the wine was aged for 5
months in stainless-steel tanks.

N OTE D’E NOL IGO (Winemaker’s Notes)

The 2008 Chianti DOCG is a deep ruby red color in the glass, while the nose exhibits
floral aromas of violets and a ripe array of red fruits. The dry, full-bodied palate is
perfectly balanced with flavors that echo the nose. The tannins are smooth and mouth-
filling, and the finish is clean. – Giancarlo Roman
