DGC-500
DIGITAL GENSET
CONTROLLER

Basler Electric’s Digital Genset Controller (DGC-500) offers a low cost microprocessor based integrated
alternative for the control and monitoring of small to medium sized gensets. Control includes engine
starting and shutdown as well as system monitoring and remote annunciation. DGC allows user inputs
and programming to provide a reliable, customizable genset controller. This unique design has features
not found in competitive models. It monitors and displays eight engine and generator parameters on the
front panel and up to a total of 18 parameters via the front panel scrolling feature. The DGC-500 offers
one of the most flexible designs. It has user-definable alarms, pre-alarms, timers, cranking cycles, sender
inputs, J1939 Engine Communications (optional), and programmable inputs and outputs.

DGC-500

DESCRIPTION
DGC-500 Digital Genset Controller utilizes microprocessor based technology to provide the most versatile system for
genset control, protection and monitoring. This microprocessor design allows easy customization of the controller's
functions to fit virtually every application's needs. DGC-500 accepts conventional engine sender inputs that can be
customized by the simple-to-use BESTCOMS PC software to obtain maximum accuracy and allows the user to not be locked
in to a specific sender type. It is also possible to get all of the engine information directly from the engine's ECU via CANBUS
and J1939. This saves time and money spent on buying, mounting, and connecting additional senders. Standard features
enable the user to meet the requirements of NFPA-110 Level 1 for non-air damper equipped engines.

EVENT RECORDING
The DGC has an event recorder that provides a record of alarms, pre-alarms, engine starts, engine stops, engine
runtime loaded, engine runtime unloaded, last run date, and many other events that are all date and time stamped to
help the user determine the cause and effect of issues related to the generator set.

COMMUNICATIONS
J1939 Communications (Optional)
J1939 CANBUS communications allows the DGC to communicate to the engine's ECU (Engine Control Unit) to gather
critical engine information like oil pressure, engine coolant temperature, RPM, battery voltage, and many more. By
utilizing the ECU, adding analog engine senders is no longer required. This, alone, can save substantial money for the
installer. It also eliminates any errors or discrepancies between the ECU data and the data displayed on the DGC that
may be present due to analog sender inaccuracies or incompatibility. 47 engine parameters in all can be obtained via
the ECU. We also can derive the added benefit of having access to the ECU's diagnostic troubleshooting codes, or
DTC's. The DTC's provide information about the engine's operating conditions and communicates these via J1939, to
the DGC, thus eliminating the need for hand-held service tools to diagnose simple engine issues.

With Volvo engines, we can also access areas of the protocol to allow for direct engine communications that provide
additional savings to the installer. The DGC can provide direct communications to Volvo ECUs to allow the ECU to
crank and stop the engine, thus eliminating the need to add more circuitry for cranking the engine. The DGC can also
adjust the engine speed to allow for regulator frequency compensation setting.

PC Communications
The DGC is fully programmable via the rear mounted RS-232 DB9 connector. The DGC-500 may be programmed via
Windows 98/XP/NT software. This software permits the user to set each adjustable DGC parameter one-at-a-time and
also allows for complete file transfers of all the parameters of a DGC for fast, simple DGC configuration. The software is
available via download from the Basler website, and it is available at no extra charge.

Remote Display Panel Communications

The DGC also comes with an integrated RS-485 port for two-wire communication to Basler Electric's RDP-110, remote
display panel. The RDP-110 may be placed up to 4000 feet away from the DGC and provide remote indication of the
necessary parameters to meet the requirements of NFPA-110 (non-damper equipped engines). This communications
port provides the annunciation of 17 operating and alarm indications and does this with the requirement of only FOUR
wires. The function of the four wires includes two for power and two for communications.
