Thursday’s Child Chapter 5

Summary:
In this chapter, Devon starts to work for Vandery Cable. Mean while, the family starts to
discuss Tin’s absence from Caffy’s life. However, Devon is sent home by Vandery Cable
after a work of work without getting paid. Da goes and confronts him with Harper
following behind only to be told by an enraged Vandery Cable that Devon’s sloppy work
had cost him two prized sows. Unable to retaliate further, the pair go home defeated. The
subject was dropped immediately and the hurt and injured Devon changed, becoming
morose and malcontent while Tin started digging for all he was worth.
Characteristics
Harper
 She is anxious.
 (Ex) Harper seem to have an uneasy mind and she misses Devon which
shows that she is worried for her brother.
 (Ev) This is evident when Harper announced “I miss Devon,” which shows that she is
anxious and worried about Devon. (pg 45, line 14)

She is concerned .
 (Ex) She cares about her siblings, espescially Devon when he came home unhappy and
spend all her time worrying about him.

 (Ev) This is evident when she “dropped the firewood and went charging down the
hill” as she was excited upon the arrival of Devon.(pg 45, line 18)
 (Ev) She thought that ” would never get sleep with all the worrying” shows that
she is worried for Devon. (pg 47, line 18)

 She is quite sarcastic.

 (Ex) She gives a sharply ironical taunt when she was confused.

 (Ev) She “[did] what everyone expected [her] to do, being eight and
ignorant” (pg 50, 6th line from bottom)
Devon
 (P) He feels miserable.
 (Ex) He is very upset and sad when he got home with no hope as he was
not given money after finishing his work.
 (Ev) This is evident as “he hid his face and kicked his feet in misery.” (pg
45, 2nd line from bottom of the page)

 (P) He is irresponsible.

 (Ex) It was actually him who did his work sloppily, but he is not
responsible for his own mistake.

 (Ev) This is evident when Mr Cable told Da about Devon’s “sloppy


workmanship” (pg 48, line 14)
Da

 (P) He is very polite.

 (Ex) He did not approach Mr Cable rudely.


 As soon as he saw Mr Cable he asked a question. “Where’s your heart?”
instead of letting out his anger. (pg 48, line 3)

 He is disappointed.

 (Ex) He had expect highly of his children and was very sad when he knew
the truth from Mr Cable.
 (Ev) This is evident when he said that “[he] hoped [he had] raised [his]
children to tell the truth.” to Mr Cable. (pg 48, line 12)

Mam
 Protective

 (Ex) She was worried of Devon and he thought that she should deal with
Mr Cable to protect her child.

 (Ev) She said “[she will] go speak to Mr Cable [herself] tomorrow”.

Vandery Cable
 He is a heartless man.
 (Ex) He shows no mercy at Devon’s mistake although he was the one who
offered the job to him.

 (Ev) He said “[he is] running at a lost even doing that” shows that he
shows no mercy and does sympathize him. (pg 48, line 15)
Theme

 Family

 (Ex) The strong bonds that hold the family together are what keeps Devon
going. They are also fiercely protective of each other, and are concerned
about each other if something is not right. The closeness of their family is
what made them not abandon Tin.

 (Ev) Mam said “Being cruel to a child simply teaches it to be cruel in its
return.” trying to protect Devon. (pg 47, line 5)
