NATURE AND IMPORTANCE OF LEADERSHIP:

There is an old expression:

"Leaders are born, not made."

The inference of this saying is that the power and leadership are vested in a limited number of people
whose innate natural ability distinguishes them to become leaders. By implication, it means that those
people who have the right power to lead will lead and rest of the people will follow them. Now lets
discuss about the importance of leadership, Leadership is an important function of management it helps
to achieve organizational goals and to maximize efficiency. The leadership is important in initiating
actions, it increases motivational level, and it provides guidance, helps in creating confidence. It also
helps in building morale and in creating strong bond of co-ordination.

Analysis:

As we have discussed that leadership is a power that distinguishes an individual from others and that is
also the case with me. I believe in the above mentioned quotation that leaders are born not made
because I think I have those qualities in me God gifted, so what I need to do is to polish them so that I
can become a successful leader. There is a question arises that why I want to become a successful leader
so the answer is that there is great importance and advantages of being a good leader as I have
mentioned above. A good leader is the one who is confident, who have high morals and the one who
give direction to others. I believe that I am the one who is confident enough and with high morals,
though I did not reach to that step of giving direction to others but I know I will.

TRAITS, MOTIVES AND CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADER:

A trait is a distinguishing feature of a person’s character. So in the same way a leader have some distinct
features accordingly. The following are the most important traits and characteristics of a leader:

Balanced Persona:

A leader is one that everyone looks upon as their guide. If the leader is getting way too aggressive or
getting too laid-back are both harmful for the followers. One should possess qualities likecalmness,
patience and tolerance and try to maintain a balance between friendliness and professionalism.
Therefore, it is very important for a leader to have a balanced personality.

Team Oriented:

The other trait of a good leader is the ability to work in a team and lead the team by coordinating all the
efforts of the team members in one direction which fulfills the organizational goals. A good leader is like
the head of the family whose job is to not only look after him but the entire family (team) as one. A good
leader always mentions the word 'we' instead of mentioning the word 'I'. This creates a sense of
belonging and a bond towards the leader, towards the team, towards the organization.

Good Listener:

Good listening skills will not only earn you respect but will also be the door of trust and belief in you by
others. This leadership quality enables you to win hearts. Listening to your subordinates is NEVER a
waste of time. In fact, if you, as a leader is listening to them and giving importance to their issues and
concerns then the people under you will be able to generate the comfort level and the belief of always
being there with them when they need you.

Be a Role Model and Not the Boss:

A leader is someone who leads others. How can one lead others if he himself as not walked the path
himself. What I am trying to say is that it is essential for a leader that he or she should meet the
standards and be an example for others who follow him. The traits of a good leader include always
guiding and helping the followers as one of them and not being bossy and commanding. Try to be a part
of the team rather than just giving orders and targets.

Focus:

Focus is very significant when it comes to achieving your goals. An unfocused leader would never be
able to lead the team towards their goals, be it the objective of the organization or the goals of the
individual team members. A leader is like the captain of the ship, if the captain is not focused and clear
in where he needs to go, the whole ship will end up being lost.

Taking Responsibility and Ownership:

A person should be confident enough to take the responsibilities and to face the challenges while
executing the task. A person who is scared to take responsibility and ownership for not only his work but
also for his team members can never prove to be a successful leader. So one of the most important
traits of a good leader is the ability to take responsibility for himself and also for those who work with
him.

Approachable:

If the leader is not within the approach of the team members then it is useless to have leader. If you are
accessible, it becomes easy for the team members to come to you and discuss their issues, if they have
any, and if they do, things can be sorted out at the very beginning and not when things go out of
proportion, which happens in case the leader is not approachable and not easy to talk with.

Are the example

A good leader is the one who not only set examples for his or her sub ordinates but also for the rest of
the world. He or she should adapt those traits and proved him or her self to be the best and also how to
be the best. In this way people will start following the leaders with their best interest possible.

ANALYSIS:

As I have mentioned number of traits and characteristics above which are essentially required by a good
leader, so if I have to look myself in the mirror to see the traits of leadership in me so I can surely say
that I am blessed with number of qualities like I am a balanced person, always listen to others and give
them chance to speak and express their feelings and feedback about certain things.

LEADERSHIP BEHAVIOUR, ATTITUDE AND STYLE:

There are 5 most important leadership behaviors that I have identified are supporting people
emotionally, monitoring people’s work in a particularly positive way, recognizing people for good
performance, consulting with people asking for their views, respecting their opinions, and acting on
their needs and the fifth is grab bag of things. Now about the attitude,

"Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character."

Albert Einstein

Leadership attitudes include task oriented and employee oriented attitudes.

Analysis:

I myself consider as the one who posses leadership behaviors but yes need to polished them as I always
appreciate people for their good work and give respect to their views also.

CHARISMATIC AND TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP:

A Charismatic leader is one who offers an environment full of energy and positive reinforcement. If you
are naturally charismatic, then you are very fortunate. Charismatic leaders inspire others and encourage
them to be their best.

The transformational leadership style is said to occur when one or more persons engage in such a way
that leaders and followers raise one another to higher levels of motivation and morality.  This is almost
like a synergy that might exist, whereby everyone gets raised to a higher level of performance.

Analysis:
I think I am a charismatic leader rather a transformational leader. I have the energy to energize the
people around me.

ETHICAL LEADERSHIP

Ethical leadership involves both acting and leading ethically over time all the time. Ethical leadership
builds trust. Ethical leadership brings credibility and respect, both for you and for the organization.
Ethical leadership can lead to collaboration. Ethical leadership is simply the right way to go.

Analysis:

Ethics are always important for everyone and the individual should take care of his or her actions while
practicing the leadership actions. And I always consider my actions in the light of ethics before executing
them.

 CONTINGENCY AND SITUATIONAL LEADERSHIP:

In contingency theory of leadership, the achievement of the leader is a function of various contingencies
in the shape of subordinate, task, and/or group variables. The value of a given pattern of leader behavior
is contingent upon the demands forced by the situation.

In Situational Leadership, managers must use different leadership styles depending on the situation. The
model allows you to analyze the needs of the situation you are facing, and then use the most
appropriate leadership style.

ANALYSIS:

I am a person who believes in situational leadership i.e. adopt the action according to the situation.

POWER, POLITICS AND LEADERSHIP

The power and politics have great impact on the leadership quality of an individual. It is essential for the
direct application and understanding of leadership. An individual should develop the political will,
expertise and personal skills to become more flexible, innovative and adaptive. Without political
awareness and skill, we face the inevitable prospect of becoming immersed.

ANALYSIS

I believe that power and politics are necessary to be a good leader.

DEVELOPING TEAMWORK:

If you are a leader in the organization and you want to develop teamwork, you need to have a good
understanding of your people. You have to spend time with them. Talk to them, know about their
opinions. In this way, you will come to understand what they care for individually. You will also discover
what makes them come alive and what their weaknesses are. That is very important if you wish to win
them over and initiate an organization that uses teamwork to its fullest potential.

When you understand your people, you also understand their motivation and their situation. Therefore,
you have a pretty good view of how to get them together as a group. Developing teamwork requires
commitment on the part of organizational leaders and employees. It is a two-way street. The managers
and leaders have to take the lead and the employees have to respond. In this way, there will be
cohesiveness and better harmony in the organization. When this part is done, the employees can simply
come together, talk and pursue the goals of the organization. They can also become more loyal to the
organization in this way.

Analysis:

Teamwork is the key to success, so it is very necessary to build a team that work together and
understand the need to achieve the goals.

INTERNATIONAL AND CULTURALLY DIVERSE ASPECTS OF LEADERSHIP

An increasing number of new entrants into the work force who belongs to different colour, races and
religion. Business has become global so it results in diversity. There are so many advantages of diversity
like reduction of turnover and absenteeism.

Analysis:

The cultural and international diversity has made the world more competitive and challenging.

  COMMUNICATION AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION:

There is verbal and non verbal way of communication. In non verbal there are facial expressions, Gazing
behavior, Body language and Touch. In verbal communication there is style of conversing and active
listening. When we have a conflict, a relationship is temporarily destabilized. An interpersonal conflict is
an expressed disagreement between at least two people whose goals are unable to coexist at the
moment.

ANALYSIS:

The one should focus on the verbal and non verbal communication skills to enhance the leadership
quality in him like me. And the one should be open and do not withdraw from the conflict.

  MOTIVATION AND COACHING SKILLS:

There is another important point of Coaching Skills: Effective coaching is a great deal more than just
problem solving. Many people get the wrong idea about coaching as only a corrective process aimed at
explicit error and deficiencies of an individual. Actually, the use of coaching skills doesn’t always have to
be driven by troubles. Challenges, opportunities, and obstacles that transcend any one member of the
organization can be the motivating force. Managers everywhere want teams that are effective, focused,
and committed to organizational goals. With a team like this, just think of the performance and results you
could deliver. Teams only perform like this if their managers are motivating them effectively.

Analysis:

I believe that coaching skills should be there as the are very much helpful and the leader should also
focus on building and polishing the motivational skills.

STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP, CHANGE AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

Strategic leaders are generally responsible for large organizations and may influence number of people.
They establish organizational structure, allocate resources, and communicate strategic vision. It
persuades others to acquire that vision. Leadership must prioritize values and initiatives, and
incorporate them into the agenda in a way that it focuses on social responsibility. Organization
managed with an emphasis on being socially progressive.

Analysis:

There should be strategic leadership and the leader should inculcate the social
responsibilities within the organization and list them int o his and the organizational priority
lost.
