risha Havlicek is a one-car
type of girl. The 20-year-old
has owned her 1997 Ford
Probe for five years and says that
she has had a lot of fond memories
driving it to different states.
“I have taken my car to many
places,” Havlicek says. “Mainly
Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota and
Missouri.”
How Havlicek describes her
car is by using its specific features
to shape an almost human-like
personality. It is no wonder that
Havlicek has named her car, but
she didn’t stop at one name — she
decided to give it two.
“My car just got the name
Lafonda,” Havlicek says. “There’s
no real story behind the name, but
my car is also known as ‘Big Bird’s
Beak,’ because it looks like Big
Bird’s beak.”
At the time Havlicek started
driving, she wasn’t too worried
about what type of car it was as
long as it could get it to work and
school.
“There is no particular reason
why I purchased this particular
car,” she says. “My aunt was selling
it, and it ran well so I decided to
buy it.”
Havlicek doesn’t get too
caught up on how expensive a car
is or if it’s the fastest. Her main
concern is if the car runs well, and
she admits that she seeks the help
of others for those hard choices.
“I don’t know a lot about
cars,” she says. “So, I don’t have a
particular brand I go for. I ask my
dad for advice when it comes to
car talk.”
One of the fondest memories
Havlicek has of Lafonda is driving
her friends around the Des Moines
and Beaverdale areas.
“The time I really think of as a
very significant time is when I had
to squeeze six of my friends into
my car to go shopping,” Havlicek
says.
For now, Havlicek is content
with Lafonda, but as she looks
toward the future she thinks of
about the car of her dreams.
“My dream car is a 2009 black
Cadillac Escalade,” Havlicek says.
“With chrome rims and everything
else on the inside black. It’s my
dream car, because it’s roomy and
looks professional, and I just over-
all love the look of it.” BL
