A

and we all begin to hold
out hope that the season’s
last snowfall is behind us,
thoughts turn to spring
and the ability to actually enjoy the
outdoors again. In Oak Park, two local
families don’t have to wait for Mother
Nature to turn up the heat to take ad-
vantage of the outdoors. These families
took matters into their own hands and
added enclosed porches — or garden
rooms — onto their homes, bringing in
outdoor vistas year-round and provid-
ing an ideal spot to relax and entertain
when the weather is warm.
On Harvey Avenue, local interior
designer Becky Brofman and her
husband John had been dreaming of
opening up their home to their back-
yard with an enclosed porch since they
bought their farmhouse 13 years ago.
The couple completely overhauled the
home before moving in, but settled in
before tackling their outdoor room.
According to Becky, the addition
was a long time coming. “We’ve been
dreaming about this for years, and
once we did it, it really finished the
back of the house. We knew exactly
what we wanted out here. We wanted
lounge seating and dining space with
wraparound views of the yard.”
Becky, who has 33 years experience
in design and had worked for architects
for several years before opening her in-
