2011-2012 Immunization Requirements

Beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, a new
immunization requirement from the Nebraska
Department of Health and Human Services, requires
all students to have two doses of the varicella
(chickenpox) vaccination unless they have previously
had the disease. Your child will not be able to start the 2011-2012
school year without the appropriate documentation.
Please contact your medical provider or the Norfolk Immunization Clinic
(402-379-1380) if your student has not had two doses of varicella or had
chickenpox disease. The nurse from the Norfolk Immunization Clinic
wanted you to be aware that the clinic will not be taking walk-ins
during July and August. You will need to call for an appointment
during those months to get your child immunized. Also, if you call the
clinic and no one answers please leave a phone message, for there is only
one nurse in the clinic, and she cannot leave a patient when the phone
rings. She will return your call as soon as she can.
We recommend you have this completed prior to the end of this school
year. Please bring the verification of the 2nd varicella immunization or
written documentation (including year) of varicella disease to the nurse’s
Education’s purpose office.

Classrooms of the Future

Andrew Marr Jaycee Bradley and Madison Buettner

What will the classroom of the future look like and why? This was the question
posed to the Eighth Grade Challenge students this semester. The students have
been working on a project based learning scenario about classrooms and
technology of the future. The students started off with each team investigating a
technology tool and providing the other students with the pros and cons of using
it with education. The students then researched information about classrooms
Taking pride in all we
of the future. Items to consider included:
•colors, designs, images, and shapes
do inspires us to go above
•types of technology and beyond.
•teacher and student needs
•environments and spaces that promote student learning
•“green” materials
Students then planned out a 3-D model of their classroom with enough room for
12 students and a teacher. They used recycled materials to make their
classrooms. Pictures were then taken of their classroom project and an iMovie
was made with the main question, What will the classroom of the future look like
and why? Students will then be presenting their 3-D models in a classroom fair
and each team will be available to answer questions concerning their model.
Look for announcements about the 3-D fair and plan to attend.

WHEN YOUR CHILD IS BEING BULLIED

Bullying is emotional and/or physical abuse. Bullies intend to inflict
harm-verbally, physically, and through intimidation (gestures and social
exclusion). Boys and girls are both bullied; but boys are more likely to be
physically hit and threatened, whereas girls are more likely to experience “Norfolk Junior
verbal taunts and social isolation. High...every student,
Bullies seek out those who appear fearful, sad, or every day...a success!”
depressed. Kids that have low self-esteem, lack social
skills, and have few friends are likely targets.
As a parent, it is natural to want to protect your child
and keep them safe. Now, more then ever, parents
must also empower their children with self-confidence
and assertiveness. Teaching your child to respond to a
bully assertively means having them ―stand tall,‖ and respond-briefly and
directly, using a strong, clam, loud, and confident voice and defending their
rights-without name-calling or making threats. Role-playing is a great way
to demonstrate these types of responses, and help your child practice the
skills he/she needs to deal with a bully’s tactics. Remind your child that
they should not deal with a bully on their own. Emphasize that they should
always tell a trusted adult and discuss who these individuals might be (i.e.,
teacher, counselor, parent, school nurse).
