HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING
THIS PROBLEM?
• High statistics of GBV in terms of passion killings & rape (Police &

• The committee established in July 2007 and is working in conjunction


with Department of Women's Affairs (Gender National Coordinating
Machinery)

• It started with a membership of 15 organizations and had since grown


to 25 includes
- government departments
- community leadership

IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT?

• YES! In 2007, Kweneng district was leading in the


“passion killing” (murder between intimate partners)
statistics

• For GBV fight to be won, there is need:


- for community’s joint efforts

- to also enable the district to achieve the pillar


of a safe and secure nation as outlined in the
National Vision 2016.

HOW ARE YOU GOING ABOUT ADDRESSING
THI S PROBLEM?

• The committee has a five year plan entailing its


planned activities in the fight against GBV which
includes
– Workshops/seminars
– awareness campaigns
– commemoration of 16
Days of Activism
– 16 Days pre-awareness campaign
– Kgotla meetings
– Marches Heads of Department’s workshop

– Thursdays in Black and Candle Light

members of the community;
both men and women;

• Fighting GBV requires a joint effort from men &


women as:
– Perpetrators
– Victims
– supporters

• We are being supported technically and financially


by the Women’s Affairs Department

• Financial support by District Multi-Sectorial


HIV/AIDS Committee (DMSAC) of Kweneng District

• And in terms of human resource; it used the


committee members and some community
members or representatives.

• Establishment of the Women‟s Gathering for „Thursday in Black

Shelter - Drop in center (2nd in the country)

• White ribbon campaign engraved „ Fighting violence starts

key stakeholders in GBV

• Thursday in Black is an international movement calling


for a world free from violence which the committee
adopted

LESSONS LEARNED
• Gender issues are very sensitive but becomes easy to deal
with when there is support of leadership
PROJECTS: Prevention

• Engaging community in the planning of activities instills a


sense of ownership in their part

• To fully address GBV, need to


tackle the related issues of religion
and culture

• Community in smaller villages


& settlements still not aware of what GBV entails
