Biology

Key Terms

• Blastula- An early embryonic form produced by cleavage of a fertilized ovum

and consisting of a spherical layer of cells surrounding a fluid-filled cavity. Also

called blastosphere

• Ectoderm- The outermost of the three primary germ layers of an embryo, from

which the epidermis, nervous tissue, and, in vertebrates, sense organs develop.

• Endoderm- The innermost of the three primary germ layers of an animal embryo,

developing into the gastrointestinal tract, the lungs, and associated structures

• Mesoderm- The middle embryonic germ layer, lying between the ectoderm and

the endoderm, from which connective tissue, muscle, bone, and the urogenital and

circulatory systems develop

• Body Plan- a term used to describe an animals shape, symmetry, and internal

organization

• Asymmetrical-

• Radial Symmetry- Symmetrical arrangement of constituents, especially of

radiating parts, about a central point

• Cephalization- An evolutionary trend in the animal kingdom toward

centralization of neural and sensory organs in the head or anterior region of the

body

• Coelom- A fluid filled space between the body wall and the digestive tract

• Acoelomate- An animal that lacks a coelom. Acoelomates, which include the

flatworm, fluke, tapeworm, and ribbon worm, exhibit bilateral symmetry and

possess one internal space, the digestive cavity

• Pseudocoelomate- a group of invertebrates with a three-layered body that has a

fluid-filled body cavity (pseudocoelom) between the endoderm and the mesoderm

• Coelomate- have a true coelom, a body cavity located entirely inside the

mesoderm

• Phylogenetic Tree- A diagram showing evolutionary lineages of organisms

Key Terms

• Gastrovascular Cavity- functions in both digestion and the transport of nutrients

to all parts of an animal body. Organisms belonging to two major phyla, the

Cnidaria and the Platyhelminthes possess gastrovascular cavities

• Respiration- The uptake of Oxygen and the release of Carbon Dioxide

• Gill- Very thin projections of tissue that are rich in blood vessels. They provide a

large surface for gas exchange, allowing the fish to breathe.

• Open Circulatory System- is an arrangement of internal transport in which

blood bathes the organs directly and there is no distinction between blood and

interstitial fluid

• Closed Circulatory System-

• Hydrostatic Skeleton- one in which the body's shape and/or function is

maintained by an incompressible fluid such as blood or hemolymph. Such

skeletons are mostly found in soft-bodied invertebrates such as earthworms and

jellyfish. A fluid-filled cavity is surrounded by muscle fibers, which can contract

to change the shape of the cavity

• Exoskeleton- A ridged external skeleton that encases the body of an animal.

• Endoskeleton- an internal support structure of an animal

• Hermaphrodite- contain both testes and ovaries. Each organism functions as

both male and female, but sperm and eggs are produced at separate times

• External Fertilization- form of fertilization in which a sperm cell is united with

an egg cell external to the body of the female

• Internal Fertilization- a form of animal fertilization of an ovum by

spermatozoans within the body of an inseminated animal, whether female or

hermaphroditic. The union of spermatozoan and ovum produces a zygote, which

develops into an embryo, which, in turn, begins to develop inside the organism.

At some point, fertilized specimens must expel the growing egg or offspring
