Unemployment In The Recession

The United States is currently in a small recession due to the high and rising

unemployment rates in the country. It seems that the unemployment rates in today's society are

much worse since the Great Depression. Many citizens are losing their jobs each day and are

seeking to look for a job opening any chance they get. Since there are limited job openings

available, competition is created and people will be fighting for available jobs. Although

unemployment has effected many people by leaving people without jobs to support themselves,

it concerns have led to discussions regarding the benefits of not being employed in this economy

In order to make money, a person must have a job. People who do not have a job do not

make enough money to support themselves and their family. People would have to pull out

money from their savings, which is not a very good thing to do because they will not have

enough money saved up for their retirement later on in the future. When people do not have

money to buy things, businesses decline. Businesses would have to lower their prices on goods,

which will cause them to make less money for their company. And when businesses decline, it

slows down the economy.

Even though there are some negative outcomes for unemployment, there can be some

positive outcomes as well. Since people do not have to work anymore, they do not have people

to order them around or tell them what to do. The person can be their own boss. They get free
Luna 2

time to themselves and can use the time to search for a new job. People would be able to explore

new careers that they have never tried out before. There are volunteer programs that can help

with gaining work experience for a future career. Most of all, people will have more time to plan

the rest of their life.

People can lose the progress that they worked hard for from their previous job. For

example, if a person was fired from a previous job, it would be on their record and can look bad

on their resume. The person would have to start all the way from the beginning and work their

way up in order to get to where they were at previously. In today's society, many people don't see

that being unemployed is a great thing. In fact, it is usually looked down upon since people think

it demonstrates that those who are unemployed are not very hard workers. That is not usually the

case at all. People lose their jobs due to the companies not having enough money to pay their

workers.

Another good thing about being unemployed is the unemployment benefits. When

unemployed people receive unemployment benefits, they receive money. It is usually enough to

live on and you do not have to do anything to receive it. Due to the recent Economic Stimulus,

the first $2,400 in benefits is tax free (BillShrink). People can use that money to purchase

necessities like utilities, food, and gas to go from job interview to job interview. They can use the

money to pay for career training to find a better job.

For those that have always wanted to go back to school and pursue a different career, one

of the best times to do this is during a period of unemployment. Since people who are

unemployed have free time, they can use this opportunity to go back to school. They will get an

education for a better job. One of the main reasons why people do not go back to school is
Luna 3

because of the need to earn money as opposed to taking out student loans. Financial Aid is also

available to those who want to go to school. Financial Aid is a program that offers free money to

those who are going to school. They help student pay for costs and fees which include textbooks

and tuition for college.

People who are unemployed will not be able to have job benefits. Job benefits include

dental and health insurance, which is mandatory especially if that person does not make enough

money to pay for the cost. If that person gets hurt or sick, they will have to go to the hospital to

be treated for medical injuries and illnesses. The costs for treating those medical emergencies

will be much more than it would if one had insurance. This could affect a person greatly and

would hurt them because they would be losing a big chunk of their savings.

For those who love to stay in shape and be healthy, being unemployed gives people free

time to exercise daily. People are able to go out for walks or a few jogs to keep your blood

pumping and your body moving. It sure beats having to stay inside and feel depressed about not

having a job. Also, people can actually have the most important meal of the day every morning;

breakfast. Since people who have jobs have to rush to work in the morning, many of them skip

breakfast and go straight to work. People eat breakfast to satisfy their hunger and give them

energy throughout the day.

The recession has caused so many individuals to take a pay cut. While the recession has

caused many individuals to take a reduction of their employee benefits, there is no denying the

importance of financial stability. While there are many Americans now on unemployment

benefits, there are many that could not afford to live on this. For these individuals, it would be

beneficial to stay with a company that reduced pay or benefits, if they were still earning above
Luna 4

what they’d be collecting from unemployment. It may not be much to live on, but every little bit

counts.

I believe that businesses and companies should open jobs to people in order to help the

economy in the future. This way, citizens are able to support themselves and their family.

Personally, I do not have a job since I still live with my parents and they support me. My parents

help me pay for my food and my education. However, I do need to start looking for a job since I

will not be living with my parents for the rest of my life. I will need to start making my own

money to be able to support myself in the future otherwise I would be struggling to live on my

own and would have to rely on others. Furthermore, this country really needs to provide more

jobs to it's citizens otherwise it will not keep the economy well balanced and prevent it from

falling apart.
