1. WEAPONS HANDLING SHOULDER FIRED WEAPONS
# This weapons handling section prepares a Marine to employ individual
weapons safely and confidently and standardizes procedures used during training
and combat to enhance safety and ensure consistency for loading, unloading, and
employing individual small arms.
2. SAFETY RULES
a. These safety rules apply to all weapons at all times, and must never be
violated.
- RULE #1 Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.
- RULE #2 never point a weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot.
- RULE #3 Keep finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to
fire.
- RULE #4 Keep weapon on safe until you intend to fire.
cc

3. CONDITION CODES
a. A weapon¶s readiness/safety status is described by one of four conditions.
The steps in the loading and unloading process take the weapon through
specific conditions which indicate the weapon¶s readiness for live fire.
- CONDITION 1. To place a weapon in condition 1, a round must be in
position to be fired and the safety must be on.
- CONDITON 2. To place a weapon in condition 2, a round must be in
position to be fired, the weapon¶s action must be closed, and the hammer
must be forward. (This condition only applies to weapons that have
external hammers).
- CONDITION 3. To place a weapon in condition 3, ammunition is in
position to be chambered, the chamber is empty, the action is closed, and
the safety is on.
- CONDITION 4. To place a weapon in condition 4, all ammunition is
removed, the chamber is empty, the action is closed, and the safety is on.
4. COMMANDS
- ³UNLOAD´ is the command used to take a weapon from any condition to
condition 4.
- ³LOAD´ is the command used to take a weapon from condition 4 to
condition 3.
- ³MAKE READY´ is the command used to take a weapon from condition
2 or 3 to condition 1.
- ³FIRE´ is the command used to specify when Marines may engage
targets.
- ³UNLOAD, SHOW CLEAR´ Is the command used that will allow the
chamber to be checked by a second individual prior to going to condition
4.
5. WEAPONS CARRIES
1. Tactical carry: Use when no immediate threat is present. Locate the
buttstock of the weapon to the side of your body at approximately hip
level with the muzzle angled up and in the direction of the enemy.
2. Alert: Use when enemy contact is likely. Place the buttstock of the
weapon in the pocket of your shoulder with the muzzle angled down at
approximately 45 degrees in the direction of the enemy.
3. Ready: Use when enemy contact is imminent. Place the buttstock of the
weapon in the pocket of your shoulder with the muzzle pointed in the
direction of likely enemy contact. A clear field of view is maintained
over the weapon sights until the target has been identified.

1. Execute Immediate Action
a. Definition: Immediate action is an unhesitating response to a stoppage
without investigating the cause.
- TAP: Slap the bottom of the magazine
- RACK: Pull the charging handle to the rear and release.
- BANG: Sight and fire.
"If your rifle stops firing with a live round in the chamber of a hot
barrel (200 rounds fired in a two minute period) remove the round
quickly. However, if you cannot remove the round within 10
seconds, remove the magazine and wait 15 minutes with the
muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
DURING COMBAT, THE PACE OF THE BATTLE WILL
DICTATE HOW LONG YOU WILL BE ABLE TO WAIT
UNTIL ATTEMPTS ARE MADE TO CLEAR THE ROUND.

of compression, the assembly will be released under spring tension and
could cause possible injury to personnel, or may become damaged or lost.
- Slightly compress the recoil spring and spring guide, while at the same
time lifting and removing the recoil spring and spring guide. Allow the
recoil spring to stretch slowly.
- Separate the recoil spring from the spring guide.
- Push in on locking block plunger while pushing the barrel slightly
forward. Lift and remove locking block and barrel assembly from the
slide. Further disassembly (beyond the above) is not allowed.

1. Perform immediate action to clear a stoppage in the service pistol.
Immediate action is the prompt action taken by a Marine or Sailor to
correct a stoppage. The procedure for applying immediate action should
become instinctive to the Sailor without the Sailor attempting to discover
the cause. It is important that the user apply immediate action instinct-
ively to correct a stoppage.
- TAP: Tap the bottom of the magazine to ensure that it is fully seated in
the magazine well.
- RACK: Pull the slide fully to the rear and release.
- BANG: Sight and fire.
