CONFESSION OF SINS
lmighty and Most Merciful Father, we whosoever will come, Trinity opens its
come before You, acknowledging our doors. Thank you for coming and may God
sins, our shortcomings, and our breaking of bless you.
our Covenant with You.
What a confusing mixture we all have within us! We are strong and we are weak, wise and
foolish, insighul and blind, honest and self-deceiving. In Lenten openness and sharing, all of
these things are on the table. There is a risk. We may not want to know all of someone else’s
faults. We may hope that our own shortcomings are not discovered. But, if we are overly self-
protecve, we can miss out on some of the warmth and guidance that others can give. We can
also miss out on their caring and love.
What are some of the needs that we share? Some people seem to need nothing. They appear
to be self-confident and self-sufficient. If their appearance is true to their real selves, they are
fortunate. If it is a false bravado, they are to be pied. If we are truly self aware, most of us admit
our needs. We need to learn from others and we also need their acceptance and need to be
appreciated for who we really are. God knows that we need these things and acts to provide
divine acceptance. Those, who see God only as judge and not as One who cares and loves,
need to go back and reread the scriptures. But, we also need human acceptance. As a child is
reported to have said, “I know that God loves me, but I want to be loved by someone with skin
on.” When we share, we receive love.
What are the strengths we share? People thronged to see Jesus, because he brought healing.
Every one of us has the power to heal and relieve the pain of others. Even if weakened ourselves
by some physical problem, our spirit can strengthen others. Jesus shares his sense of God’s
nearness. If we share what God means to us, it may help others to have faith and trust. Jesus
had a mission of love and compassion. We can share our own sense of purpose and meaning
in life and strengthen those around us. Sharing the strength we have within us makes it grow.
Sharing both our needs and our strengths with others enriches everyone’s life and moves us
closer to what God seeks for us.
“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil and aer fasng forty days and
forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these
stones to become loaves of bread.” Mahew 4:1-3
Fasng has been used throughout the ages to prepare the people of God for the great things God has in store
for them. As we pray through this season of transion and Divine imaginaon, I am calling, I am asking, I am
requesng that the enre church become involved in some form of prayer and fasng. The following are several
types of fasts that can be used to develop spiritual power and clarity.
LENTEN FAST
April 3 – April 9 Drink only juices, water and/or tea
April 10 – April 16 Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m.
April 17 – April 23 Slowly begin to add meat to your diet
Fast #2 – The Daniel Fast (Taken from the book of Daniel). When Daniel was captured by the Babylonians, he
asked of the Babylonians if he, along with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, could fast, eang only fruits and
vegetables so they would be prepared to confront the Babylonian king.
March 9 – March 19 Eat all meals before 6:00 p.m.
March 20 - March 27 Eat only two meals a day before 6 p.m.
March 28 – April 2 Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m.
April 3 – April 9 Eat one meal a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added.
April 10 – April 16 Eat two meals a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added
April 17 – April 23 Eat three meals a day before 6:00 p.m.
Please consult your doctor before proceeding with fasng. If you take medicaon or have any parcular ailment, it
is important to first communicate with your physician.
There is a story that goes back to the 1970’s, told to me by the pastor of one of the wealthiest men in
the area. This man came into his pastor’s study one morning and said, “Pastor, can I have an hour of your
me?” I imagine that when you are the pastor of one of the wealthiest men around, you do not have
much trouble finding an hour of me for him.
But, as they sat there, the man leaned forward and said, “Now listen. I want you to listen to me very
carefully, because I have something to say, and I want to be understood. I want you to know that there is
an essenal and abiding tragedy at the heart of my life.” When the pastor said this to me, my heart just
simply went down.
This man had done so much for so many and given away millions, and endowed all kinds of worthwhile
ventures; I thought, great heavens what kind of thing is going on to confess to me that I am going to have
STEWARDSHIP
to live with when I had so much confidence in him? The man said, “Yes, the great and abiding tragedy at
the heart of my life is that I have no capacity to give. I cannot give anything.” The pastor replied, “What
do you mean, you cannot give anything? You’ve endowed hospitals, crippled children’s centers; you have
given millions away, literally millions, for all kinds of great and good work, including the whole program of
the church at home and overseas, and in social enterprise and service.” To which the man responded, “I
didn’t think you would understand. Don’t you realize that aer I have done all these things, aer I Have
given all this money, that I am not giving anything? I sll have everything that I could possibly want or
need or imagine le, and I cannot get rid of it. It goes on and it has to go on, because while I give a lot of it
away, the rest of it is used to keep people in employment to keep industry going, etc.
The pastor said, “Quite frankly, I do not understand the depth of the problem.” “I did not think you would,”
said the man, “but let me tell you something; it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle
than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.” Scripture says that, “With man, some things are
impossible, but with God all things are possible, even the rescuing of a rich man.” That is an astonishing
insight; that it is difficult and requires divine grace to be able to love and to have so much. We are the first-
class passengers on spaceship earth, we are the rich man, and it may be that there is an abiding tragedy at
the heart of our life, unless by some divine grace we become able to love and to give because we love.
Back 2 Basics!
Did you know that white vinegar can be used as a cleaning product?
Mildly acidic white vinegar dissolves dirt, soap scum, and hard water deposits from smooth
surfaces, yet is gentle enough to use in soluon to clean hardwood flooring. White vinegar is
a natural deodorizer, absorbing odors instead of covering them up. (And no, your bathroom
won't smell like a salad! Any vinegar aroma disappears when dry.)
