Motorisierter Individualverkehr stellt für
historische Stadtzentren häufig ein großes
Problem dar. Im zentralspanischen Toledo
wurde dem mit dem Bau einer Parkgarage
für 400 Kraftfahrzeuge im »Paseo de Reca-
redo« begegnet. Eine Serie von überdachten
Rolltreppen lässt die motorisierten Stadtbe-
sucher nun von der Tiefgarage zur höher
gelegenen Altstadt gelangen. Den Fußpunkt
der Rolltreppenkaskade erreichen sie durch
eine kurze Passage unter den Fundamenten
der mittelalterlichen Stadtmauern.
Der Durchgang ist auch wie ein neues Tor
zur Stadt, eine Alternative zu den Toren der
Bisagra und Cambrón. Somit konnten die
mittelalterlichen Wälle in ihrer Gesamtheit
erhalten werden.
Auf einer Seite werden die Treppen von
einer Stützmauer begrenzt, die gefaltet ist
und als Dach zum Schutz der Passanten
auskragt. Dieses grüne Dach gibt dem
Hang Kontinuität, folgt jedoch nicht exakt
der natürlichen Neigung, sondern ist nach
außen leicht angehoben. Die voluminöse
Konstruktion wurde in den Hang gegraben,
der Farbton der ocker durchgefärbten
Ortbetonkonstruktion entstammt dem der
Architektur Toledos.
Der instabile Hang stellt tragfähigen Bau-
grund erst in etwa 30 Metern Tiefe zur
Verfügung. Um die Position des Treppen-
baus über den Resten der Stadtmauer zu
sichern, musste die armierte, 120 cm starke,
Bodenplatte auf Bohrpfählen gegründet
werden. Bei einem Höhenunterschied von
36 Metern wurde die Rolltreppe in sechs
Abschnitte geteilt, die sich der Topografie
anpassen. So wird bei den Benutzern auch
eine mögliche Höhenangst vermieden. Ins-
gesamt ergibt sich ein langer, durchgehen-
der Schlitz entlang der gesamten Anlage.
Während der Fahrt auf der Rolltreppe kön-
nen die Stadtbesucher ihren Blick weit über
die Ebene des Tajo schweifen lassen und
auch die neuen Stadtteile betrachten.
Aus der Distanz gesehen ist dieser Schlitz
sowohl charakteristisches Merkmal des
Bauwerks als auch der Stadt Toledo: ein
Einschnitt, ein Spalt aus Licht, eine Wunde
in der Fassade der Stadt.

Reconciling the needs of vehicular and pedes-
trian traffic poses a considerable problem in
many historical city centres today. In Toledo,
in central Spain, a step has been taken to
resolve this by building a parking garage in
the Paseo de Recaredo.
The garage provides space for 400 vehicles
and is linked with the city at a higher level by
a cascading system of covered escalators.

the foot of the escalators is via a short pas-
sageway beneath the foundations of the
medieval walls. The route forms a new gate-
way to the city – an alternative to the Bisagra
and Cambrón Gates – and also allowed the
walls themselves to be left intact.
The escalators are flanked on one side by a
retaining wall cut into the hillside. This struc-
ture is folded and cantilevered out at the top
to create a protective covering for pedestri-
ans. Its green, planted roof also forms a visual
continuation of the slope, even though it does
not precisely follow the natural contours of the
ground and rises slightly towards the outside.
Cut into the hillside, this voluminous wall
structure was built in ochre-coloured con-
crete, which reflects the traditional coloration
of Toledo architecture.
The unstable nature of the ground made it
necessary to sink the foundations to a load-
bearing bed of rock at a depth of roughly
30 metres. In addition, to secure the structure
over the remains of the city walls, the 120 cm
reinforced base slab is supported on bored
piles. The escalator system rises over a height
of 36 m and is divided into six stages that
follow the topography of the site. The division
of the structure into discrete sections also
helps to overcome any fear of heights on the
part of users, who enjoy a broad view over
the Tajo plain and the new areas of the city
from the escalators.
The structure draws a continuous, meander-
ing line in the hillside in the form of a slit-
like recess. Visible from a distance, it forms
a distinctive feature – a breach, an illuminated
fissure or a pale wound cut in the face of
the city.
