Kurz vor Weihnachten vergangenen Jahres
fand die Eröffnungsfeier des neuen Prada
Stores in SoHo statt. Es ist das erste von
drei großen Geschäften, in dem Rem Kool-
haas neue Verkaufsideen für die Mailänder
Modefirma realisiert; weitere werden in Los
Angeles und San Francisco entstehen.
Nach einiger Verzögerung und enormen
Kosten ist das Prestigeobjekt – kein Laden
im herkömmlichen Sinn, sondern Erlebnis-
raum, Shopping-Experiment, privater und
öffentlicher Raum zugleich – nun vollendet.
Nachts verwandelt sich der kommerzielle
Kleiderladen zu einer Stätte für Kultur, zu
einem Auditorium, in dem 200 Menschen

Prada, is designed as an experimental shop-
ping environment and a space for various
events. Accommodating up to 200 persons,
it can be transformed at night into a venue for
the arts, with facilities for film showings, vari-
ous performances and lectures. The stage for
these events is formed by a large wave-like
flight of stairs that sweeps down from the en-
trance level. During the day, the steps are
used to display shoes and handbags. At
night, they serve as seating. On the opposite
side, the wave sweeps up again in the form of
a smooth, curving ramp, from which a plat-
form can be folded out. A narrow staircase
at the side leads to sales areas at the rear,
where clothing and accessories are sus-
pended in space in mesh cages. These digi-
tally controlled elements run along tracks in
the ceiling and can be drawn aside when spe-
cial events are held. In the basement, there
are further sales areas, a cosmetics depart-
ment and changing cubicles. At the press of a
button, the transparent walls of the cubicles
can be transformed into opaque surfaces. By
a process of digital visualization, a “magic mir-
ror” allows customers to see themselves from
all sides in slow motion in playback. Simulated
lighting conditions also enable one to judge
how clothing will look in sunlight and at night.

Vorträgen oder Performances teilzunehmen.

Bühne für all diese kulturellen Aktivitäten ist
eine riesige Welle aus Holz, die sich von der
Eingangsebene nach unten schwingt und
als Sitztreppe dient. Tagsüber werden auf
den Stufen Schuhe oder Handtaschen aus-
gestellt. Auf der gegenüber liegenden Seite

schwappt die Welle als glatte Holzfläche

wieder nach oben. Aus dieser Fläche kann
eine Plattform ausgeklappt werden. Über a
eine schmale Treppe an der Seite erreicht
der Besucher weitere Verkaufsflächen im
rückwärtigen Teil des Geschäfts. Kleider
und Accessoires sind in unterschiedlich
großen Käfigen aus Streckmetall ausgestellt
und hängen frei im Raum. Sie laufen, digital

gesteuert, in Schienen an der Decke und

können immer wieder neu positioniert wer-
den. Findet eine Veranstaltung statt, werden
die Käfige eingesammelt. Der untere Wen-
depunkt der Welle erschließt zusätzliche
Verkaufsräume, eine Kosmetikabteilung aa
sowie die Umkleiden im Untergeschoss.
Dort offenbaren sich weitere technische Raf-
finessen: Auf Knopfdruck verwandeln sich
die transparenten Umkleidewände in opake
Flächen. In einem »Zauberspiegel« kann

sich der Kunde, dank digitaler Visualisie-
rung, von allen Seiten und in »slow motion« Floor Plan • Section scale 1:750
im Playback sehen. Lichtsimulationen führen
vor, dass das Kleid in der Dämmerung ge-
nauso gut aussieht wie bei Sonnenschein.
