COURSE SYLLABUS

COURSE NAME : INFORMATICS

COURSE DESCRIPTION : Integrates nursing science with computer technology


and information science to identify, gather, process,
and manage information. Emphasis on technology
system and data standards based on nursing
informatics principles/theories. It further deals with
the utilization of clinical information systems in
management and decision-making of patient care.

CREDIT : 2 units Lecture

CONTACT HOURS : 36 lecture hours; 12 sessions

PLACEMENT : 2nd year level, Summer Class

I. Objectives
General Objectives:
After successful completion of this course, the students will be familiar with
the concepts, applications and terminologies associated with nursing
informatics, for use in nursing practice and evidenced-based nursing.

Specific Objectives:
1. Explore historical perspective of nursing, the computer and its system.
2. Identify key trends and issues in nursing informatics and the impact on
health care information systems.
3. Explain how theories, such as communication, information, management,
systems, and nursing relate to health care information systems.
4. Identify major applications of informatics within nursing practice.
5. Analyze current health care information systems used in nursing practice,
administration, research, and education.
6. Describe the international perspective in nursing informatics worldwide
and its future directions.

A. MODULE 01: FOUNDATIONS OF NURSING INFORMATICS


Time Frame: 3 hours Date: March 29, 2011

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of discussion, the students are expected to:

1. Discuss different definitions and models of nursing and healthcare


informatics.
2. Discuss core concepts and the scope of practice of nursing informatics.
3. List all the different roles and function of a Nursing Informaticist.
4. Explain how the adoption of new technologies changed the traditional work
environment in nursing into a safer and improved health care delivery.
5. State the Historical perspective of nursing and computers according to six
time period and four major nursing areas.

B. MODULE 02: FUNDAMENTALS OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION

At the end of discussion, the students are expected to:

1. Recognize the components of Information and Communication Technology.


2. Discuss the concepts of Computer Technology and Communication Technology.
3. Identify the different computer hardware and enumerate their use.
4. Recognize the different Computer Software especially those that are helpful in
nursing practice.
5. List the types of network connections and discuss how each of these operates.

C. MODULE 03: FREE AND OPEN SOUCE SOFTWARE (FOSS)


Time frame: 6 hours Dates: April 11 & 12, 2011

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Describe the basic concepts of open source software (OSS) and free software (FS).
2. Describe the difference between open source and free software, and proprietary
software, particularly in respect in licensing.
3. Discuss why an understanding of differences is important in a healthcare context
and where a migration from proprietary to open source and free software is being
considered.
4. Identify alternative FOSS applications for common proprietary software and
compare its features.
5. Recognize the importance of organizations and available resources to assist the
nurse interested in exploring the potential of open source software.

D. MODULE 04: TECHNOLOGY ENHANCED NURSING CARE DELIVERY

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Enumerate advantages of adopting technology in healthcare practice.


2. Distinguish different technological tools which improve the delivery of quality
nursing care.
3. Recognize the role of technology in the medication-use process
4. Identify different computer systems which contribute effective and safe healthcare
delivery.

E. MODULE 05: SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT LIFE CYCLE (Laboratory)


LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of discussion, the students are expected to:

1. Define System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and enumerate its essential phases
for software developers.
2. Integrate the concept of Nursing Process in the phases of SDLC.
3. Develop a program by designing a flowchart following the phases of SDLC.

F. MODULE 06: PROJECT MANAGEMENT (Laboratory)


LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of discussion, the students are expected to:

1. State the steps of software development-life system


2. Create a sample software that follows the steps of SDLS
3. Perform basic project management skills.

G. MODULE 07: ETHICO – LEGAL ISSUES AND CONCERNS


Time Frame: 3 hours Dates: April 19, 2011

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of discussion, the students are expected to:

1. State general principle of informatics ethics based on The IMIA Code of Ethics for
Health Information Professionals.
2. Recognize the different responsibilities of health Information Professional as
stated in its code of ethics.
3. Identify different ethical and legal issues on the use of technology in clinical
practice.
4. Ability to find solutions on each identified ethical-legal issues.
5. Acknowledge local initiatives on Information and Communication Technology.

H. MODULE 10: PRACTICE APPLICATION AND CONSUMER’S USE OF INFORMATICS

2. Identify some future trends in computer use in nursing practice.

2. Describe major influences on the future of nursing informatics.
