Acknowledgments

I would primarily like to thank Dr. Andrew Jackson for his guidance,
patience and enthusiasm during the research, preparation and proofing of
this thesis. I would also like to thank Professor Glasser for patently
listening to my developing hypothesis and offering invaluable guidance in
the execution of my research and the preparation of this thesis.

Additionally I would like to thank Dr. Craig Adam for his tuition in the
preparation of samples for, and use of the XRPD facility, and
interpretation of the results. I am deeply indebted to Miss Linda Ault and
Miss Trish Starbuck the ICP-AES Wizards at the British Geological Survey
in Nottingham, for their help and kind encouragement while dealing with
my pore solutions. To Dr. Brian Jones for spending time (Christmas) to
prove the mathematics used in the model. Mrs. Anne van den Boom for
looking up the diffraction patterns of the different phase and faxing them
to me. To Dr. Alexander Livingstone of the Royal museum of Scotland
for sending a diffraction pattern of “wild” thaumasite. Also to Dr. R Nawaz
of the Ulster Museum for a sample of ettringite and parent rock from
Scawt hill. Mrs. Elizabeth Treadwell and Mr. Shamshad Ali, technicians at
Fosroc for their assistance with the preparation of the low water: powder
ratio grouts.

I would like to thank Mr. Les Cheriton, my manager at Fosroc, and Mr.
John Wastell , my manager at Simoniz for turning a blind eye to me
working on my thesis while more pressing work was required. To Mr.
Robert Viles, Les’s boss, for lending me lab space to store the many
cubes I made and paying the bill for the furnace. Dr. Austin Judge for
encouragement and lending me his thesis so that I got an idea of what
one looks like.

Penultimately, I acknowledge Fosroc International Ltd and Simoniz

International PLC, both of the Burmah Castrol group, for the financial
support and loan of equipment to produce this thesis. TAG PC for a
“faster than light PC” at a “Tiny” price. Borland C 3++ and C 4.5 languages
and the Microsoft corporation for the rest of the software.

Finally, but by no means least to Karen, my wife, a biologist who hates

chemistry, but has proof read my thesis and managed to keep my beloved
children Emma and Stuart entertained. Karen, without your help and
support this would not have been possible.
