CREATING A GOOD IMPRESSION

You only get one chance to create a first impression, so use it wisely.

Research shows that 93% of the impact of a first impression is formed on non-
verbal communication, i.e. how we speak and how we look and behave. So as
you stand in front of the recruitment staff you need to ensure you are giving the
right signals.

When you attend the assessment centre we advise that you wear a coordinating
suit (ladies - jacket and skirt, gentlemen - jacket and trousers). Although it is
purely down to individual preference, we recommend your shoes are flat soled or
flat heeled.

The essential part in relation to your shoes is to make sure that you have polished
them thoroughly.

Ensure your nails are clean and that your hair is tidy - getting it cut the day before
would not be a bad thing.

Also, make sure that you come across in a confident manner, but do not be over-
confident – there is a fine line. Nobody likes an arrogant person, so make sure
you are not over the top in terms of your confidence.

Your body language plays an important part throughout the selection process, so
make sure you are aware of your posture.

When sitting down, sit upright. When standing, stand tall and do not slouch.
Be proud of yourself and who you are and above all – smile and enjoy yourself!

CREATING A GOOD IMPRESSION
FACIAL EXPRESSION AND EYE CONTACT

Make sure that you are smiling and that you exude warmth and friendliness. Of
course, it is unrealistic to expect you to smile all of the time but it will help you
to relax and it is an aspect of your personality that the recruitment staff will be
looking for on the day.

It is a good idea to ask your friends and family what they think of your body
language and how you come across to them. Try to ask someone who will give
you an honest answer and not just something that you want to hear.
Eye contact is essential and if you are a shy person then you will need to work on
this.

Eye contact shows that you are confident in nature, which forms part of the
qualities and attributes that we discussed in a previous section.
However, there is a fine line between making eye contact and staring at a person.
Continually staring at somebody in the eyes can be confrontational and off-
putting.

Try looking around the eyes at different points in a triangular formation just to
break up the eye contact.

CREATING A GOOD IMPRESSION
COMMUNICATION

Communication is not just about having the ability to talk to people. It also
involves listening too.

There are basically two different forms of listening skills – verbal and non-verbal.
Verbal listening skills utilise the spoken word to agree, confirm or explore, whilst
somebody is talking. Simple words and phrases such as ‘yes, I agree’, ‘that must
have been awful’, ‘I can see your point of view’ are all used to let a person know
that we are listening to what they are saying.

Non-verbal listening skills are purely facial expressions, which again let
somebody know that you are listening to them. For example, a simple nod of the
head informs a person that you understand or agree with what they are saying.
Also frowning, smiling and laughing are all forms of non-verbal communication
skills.

Throughout the assessment, you will need to demonstrate effective

communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal.

We recommend that you practice these skills prior to attending the assessment
and make sure that you are not false but sincere, in all of your actions.

CREATING A GOOD IMPRESSION
BE ENTHUSIASTIC

There is no doubt that enthusiasm can win people over. An enthusiastic person
can bring great benefits to a team and you will want to demonstrate that you are
enthusiastic about the airline you are applying to join.

If you are there just going through the motions then the recruitment staff will pick
up on this.

Be the enthusiastic person amongst the crowd and get involved whenever the
opportunity arises. If a volunteer is asked for, then put your hand up. You have
come a long way and prepared hard for the assessment. Do everything you can
to improve your chances on the day.

BE CONFIDENT – BUT NOT OVER-CONFIDENT!

Confidence is an important asset of the cabin crew member. You will have to
deal with situations on a daily basis that require your strength of character,
assertiveness and confidence. However, there is a fine line between confidence
and over-confidence. Throughout the selection process, demonstrate your
confidence, but do not overdo it.

Over-confidence is arrogance and it is not wanted in the airline industry.

PUNCTUALITY

The airline industry wants to provide a service that is on time, every time, and it
therefore requires its staff to be the same.

Make sure that you are not late for any part of the selection process. Plan your
journey to the assessment centre well in advance, and if you are worried about
the traffic, then it might be a good idea to invest in hotel accommodation close to
the venue the night before.

Problems such as not knowing where to park, roadworks or getting lost are all
common experiences that the ill-prepared candidate will encounter. Be prepared
and cover every eventuality. The last thing you want to happen is to get off on the
wrong foot by being late.

CREATING A GOOD IMPRESSION
WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR INTERVIEW

IS SAFE GOOD?

Many people dress to feel safe at the interview. Whilst this is not a problem, why
not try being a little bolder in your choice of colours? Have a look at the colour
scheme of the cabin crew uniform for the airline you are applying to join. When
choosing your outfit and its colour, take into consideration the airline’s image.

MALES - SHOES

Make sure that you shoes are clean and well-polished. Having dirty or untidy
shoes says a lot about you as a person. If you are not used to cleaning your
shoes, then now is a good time to begin. Use real shoe polish and a brush and
don’t just go over them with a silicone cleaner.

CLEANLINESS

Your personal cleanliness is very important. Your hair should be washed and
well-styled, unless you don’t have any, of course. It is advised that you avoid any
wild colours or styles and if your hair is coloured, make sure that no roots are
showing.

Hands and nails should also be clean and not bitten.

TATTOOS

Visible tattoos are usually not acceptable, but if you do have some, make sure
they are hidden away as much as you can.

YOUR SUIT

It is a good idea to invest in a quality suit, if you can afford it. Choose a quality
material and not one that is likely to crease easily.

If you are driving to the interview then make sure you take off your jacket before
setting out, as it can easily become creased at the back whilst sitting down.

CREATING A GOOD IMPRESSION
WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR INTERVIEW

YOUR TIE

Choose a tie that reflects your personality. It should be of a formal nature and not
stand out for the wrong reasons. Once again, consider the image of the airline
and the colour scheme they use.

FACIAL HAIR

Unfortunately, most airlines will not accept facial hair so we advise that you turn
up clean shaven. It is worthwhile checking with the airline first about their policy in
relation to facial hair.

FEMALES - PERSONAL CLEANLINESS

This is vital, as we are sure you are aware.

Try to think of any airlines that you have flown with either recently or in the past.
What do you remember about the cabin crew? Were they well presented? The
image that the airline wants to portray is of vital importance and your image
should reflect that image.

Your hands and nails are continually on show whilst working as a cabin crew
member and therefore they need to be clean, well-manicured and looked after.
Your choice of nail varnish is your own, but we recommend that you do wear
some.

SHOES

Make sure that your shoes are well cleaned and polished with no scuffs or
scrapes. We recommend that you wear court shoes for the selection process,
although this is not vital.

YOUR CHOICE OF HAIRSTYLE

The most important thing in relation to your choice of hairstyle, is that you feel
confident with how you look. You can wear your hair up or down, the choice is
yours, but if you do decide to wear your hair up, then make sure there are no
strands or bits sticking out anywhere.

Make sure it is washed and styled and looking good. Your hair says a lot about
who you are, so that extra time spent on it, will go a long way.

WEAR A PROFESSIONAL-LOOKING SUIT

It is important, once again, to make sure that you feel good and comfortable with
whatever you choose to wear. A skirt, dress or suit are all acceptable and the
choice of colour is totally down to you.

We mentioned earlier that some colours are safe and whilst there is no problem
with a safe colour, you might impress with something that is a little bit more daring
and you will be guaranteed to stand out from the majority of people who will be
wearing grey, blue or black. The best advice is to try a few outfits on and see what
you think looks best. Make sure that whatever you decide to wear is comfortable,
doesn’t crease easily and is of good quality.

Remember to consider matching the colours that represent the airline.

HOW TO LOOK YOUR BEST

Making sure you get enough sleep is vital to keeping your energy levels up,
and eating a well-balanced diet will go a long way to keeping you focused and
determined prior to and during the cabin crew selection process.

The saying ‘we are what we eat’ is very true and a diet of regular alcohol, fast
food and cigarettes is not the most effective way to maintaining a healthy look.

Of course, we all need to relax and enjoy ourselves, but being disciplined and
making sure you get sufficient sleep before the assessment day is essential.
On the following pages we have provided a number of useful tips and advice on
how to look your best.

You may already be fully conversant with what is required to look after yourself.
However, we can all make big improvements on what we already know and do.
If you are unsure about any part of your appearance or presentation, then it is
always good to ask people who know or who are professionals in their field.

Hair stylists, beauty therapists, nail technicians and personal trainers can all give
you great tips on how to improve yourself, so don’t be afraid to try something new.

HOW TO LOOK YOUR BEST

NAIL CARE

Your nails say a lot about your appearance especially if you are looking to work
within this field. Having ‘well looked after’ and presentable nails is vital, and the
airline recruitment staff will be looking closely at them.

Apart from this reason, having nice nails can build your confidence, and you
won’t find that you are trying to hide them all the time if your nails are in a poor
condition.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR NAILS

When applying nail varnish, a good tip is to touch the brush onto the nail away
from the cuticle, as opposed to touching directly onto the cuticle line. When you
touch the brush onto the nail, push down slightly with the minimum of pressure
and slide back towards the cuticle. By doing this you are less likely to apply
varnish to the skin, and your nails will look far more presentable with the varnish
neatly applied.

If you find that you are always in a rush in the mornings try applying your nail
varnish about 90 minutes before you go to bed, painting directly over the old nail
varnish.

When you wake up in the morning, you should find that the nail varnish will have
softened and will be far easier to remove in the shower. Any nail varnish that
is still there after your shower will easily be removed using a soft cloth. This is
possibly the best method to remove your nail varnish without the use of varnish
remover.

Sometimes you may find that the nail varnish you apply peels off near to the
cuticle. The reason for this is, usually, that the adhesive strength of the nail bed
surface is not as strong as the top portion of the nail.

How2become... CABIN CREW

Copyright © 2007 how2become Ltd. All rights reserved.
CREATING A GOOD IMPRESSION
LOOKING AFTER YOUR NAILS

Try gently rubbing the top surface of the nail bed with a mild abrasive file, which
will in turn remove the polished surface of the nail and allow for a stronger
application of the nail varnish. Another great tip when it comes to nail care is to
always apply a few thin coats of nail varnish as opposed to one thick one. It may
take you more time to apply the nail varnish, but you will find that you get a better
application.

Some people do find, however, that their nail varnish is too thick to apply a
number of thin coats. In this instance you may find it a good idea to keep your nail
varnish in the fridge. This will help it to keep in better condition and will also have
the effect of extending its life.

Many people ask if it is worth paying extra money for a better quality nail varnish
and the answer is ‘yes’ in most cases. However, do remember that the saying
‘you get what you pay for’ doesn’t extend to every expensive nail varnish on the
market. Be careful about which one you choose, although it is usually best to buy
one from a reputable name or company.

If you find that you get too many bubbles in your nail varnish, try rolling it as
opposed to shaking it vigorously. By shaking the bottle, you are only encouraging
the bubbles to appear which will just cause you more frustration.

CREATING A GOOD IMPRESSION
LOOKING AFTER YOUR NAILS

Here are some great tips for preventing your nails from becoming cracked and
worn.

Always make sure that you wear rubber gloves, or a suitable alternative, when
washing up or carrying out other household activities. The reason for this is that
detergents and other household cleaning agents will harm your nails and skin
over time, causing them to dry out and possibly crack.

Also, try not to file your nails too often, but if you do, make sure you file in one
direction only as this will help preserve the life and quality of your nails. Filing
in different directions will only cause to move the nail in different directions and
cause unnecessary strain which may lead to cracking over a prolonged period.

Many people have problems with nail growth, but this is usually down to either a
lack of patience or the fact that they bite them or they have become broken due
to neglect.

Most people’s nails grow more than an inch per year in total, but you have to look
after them and be patient in order to see results. They best way to see results is
to start a healthy nail program with your nail technician.

He or she will be able to advise you on the best methods for improving nail
growth and you may find that it is money well spent.

HAIR

So what is the key to great looking hair?

Many people go to the same hair stylist for years just because they are
comfortable with either the stylist or the surroundings, even if they don’t get the
best possible hair-cut or style possible.

Yes, you can spend a lot of money by going to an expensive salon and, whilst
this is not always necessary, you may find it worthwhile, especially if you are
attending a photo shoot.

The professional, well-qualified and experienced hair stylist will be able to give
you exactly what you want and, furthermore, can advise you on how to best look
after your hair. You may know a friend or relative who has fantastic looking hair,
so it may be worth asking them which hair stylist they attend.

A good hair stylist will normally have a great reputation and a lot of customers
who go back to them time and time again, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find
one that suits your requirements.

Also, having great looking and feeling hair will work wonders for your confidence.
On the following pages we have provided you with some useful information and
advice in relation to hair care.

It is a fact that hair, once it has left the root, is no longer alive. If it was then it
would be extremely painful when the hairdresser begins to cut it!

However, this does not mean that your hair doesn’t need to be looked after, in fact
the exact opposite is true. You need to ensure that you look after your hair in the
correct manner to ensure it looks fantastic all year round.

Having as much knowledge about hair and what makes it look and feel great is
just as important as the decisions you make with respect to your wardrobe.

FACTS ABOUT YOUR HAIR

-Hair is made of keratin which can also be found in your fingernails.

-A single strand of hair is less than 0.5 millimetres in thickness.

-You will lose approximately 30 – 100 strands of hair in any one day.

-Some people who put themselves on a ‘crash diet’ can experience temporary
hair loss.

-People who have blonde hair will usually have more strands than those people
with red or dark hair colour.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR HAIR

Washing your hair is obviously an important aspect of its care. Don’t, however,
think that by constantly washing your hair you will improve its look and quality.
Just by understanding a few simple facts about how you wash your hair, you can
improve its look and feel greatly.

The temperature of the water that you use to wash your hair is important. Make
sure it isn’t too hot and if you feel any discomfort on your scalp due to heat then
imagine what it is doing to your hair!

Remember that the hair itself is dead and therefore cannot feel the heat, but if
the water temperature is hurting your scalp then it cannot be doing your hair any
good either. You should be able to gauge the temperature of the water by just
testing it with your hand, before allowing it to come into contact with your hair.
Whether you are using shampoo or conditioner, make sure that you rinse your
hair thoroughly both before application and after. When applying shampoo, make
sure that you gently massage it through your hair in a circling motion.

The general rule is that you should normally only apply shampoo once a day
and also the amount of shampoo that you apply is important too. Remember that
‘more is less’, so don’t apply too much shampoo or conditioner, but instead be
responsible with the amount that you use during application.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR HAIR

Once you have completed washing your hair, drying it correctly is your next step.
You should use a dry towel first of all and gently pat your hair to remove the
excess water. Then you may wish to use the towel and wrap it around your hair
making sure that it is totally covered. This will allow the excess moisture to be
absorbed by the towel before blow drying. Try leaving your hair wrapped in the
towel for approximately 5 minutes.

When it comes to blow drying your hair, be careful! Blow drying your hair with the
most powerful dryer will probably do it more harm than good. If your hairdryer has
a number of speed and heat settings, then you should start at the lowest setting
and gradually work upwards until you find a setting that is comfortable.

Even though it may take you a little longer to blow dry your hair, you will be
causing less damage and the look that you get will be far better than if you go for
the fastest and hottest setting available. This again goes down to the type of hair
dryer you choose.

There are many available on the market but you don’t have to buy the most
expensive one to get results.

Choose one that is within your budget, making sure there are variable settings to
choose from and above all, make sure it is safe.

If you comb your hair, then you need to be careful that you don’t damage it either
by using the wrong type of hair brush or doing it too vigorously. Remember that
your hair is not living but, if it was, would you brush or comb your hair as hard as
you do now? Possibly not.

Therefore, we advise that you use a suitable comb or brush which is preferably
not made of metal or which has very sharp edges. Of course, your hair brush or
comb needs to be thin enough to go through your hair, but your hair does not like
sharp edges, so be careful.

Many people use elastic hair bands to tie their hair back. Whilst this is acceptable,
make sure you invest in a suitable band that is protected by material as your hair
will not benefit from a normal elastic band with no covering.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR HAIR

When combing wet hair take your time and work systematically starting at the
ends of the hair and gradually working backwards until you reach the root. This
may take a little extra time but with practice you will become more proficient with
your hair maintenance.

Be selective about the combs and brushes that you buy and remember not to use
metal combs of brushes with very sharp edges.

CREATING A GOOD IMPRESSION
LOOKING AFTER YOUR SKIN

Many people fail to look after their skin properly, which ultimately results in its
premature ageing.

One of the most effective ways that men and women can look after their skin is to
apply a good quality moisturiser especially after showering or bathing. You don’t
have to buy the most expensive skin product available, but it is worth in investing
in a reliable well known brand that has a reputation for quality.

Try to cover every part of your body, obviously excluding your hair. There are
many moisturising products available for your body, hands, nails and face and, if
your budget will allow it, try to purchase a separate one for each of them.
One of the most common causes of skin ageing is the sun, or sun beds, for that
matter. Many people use sun beds as a way of keeping a healthy-looking glow all
year round, but are unaware of the dangers of this form of tanning.

If you do use sun beds or tanning booths, then it is vital that you limit your
exposure and be careful not to become addicted to them. In fact, it is best if you
do not use them at all, but instead use a good quality fake tanning application, if
you feel the need to.

When your skin is exposed to the sun, we advise that you use sun block to
prevent your skin from the sun’s harmful rays and also prevent premature ageing.
Be careful in the sun and don’t overdo your exposure times.

Try to exfoliate your skin occasionally, to remove the dead particles and to help
keep it looking smooth and alive. This can be achieved by gently rubbing your
skin with a suitable exfoliating body brush or glove whilst bathing or in the shower.
You can do this at any time of the day, but we recommend you carry out this
technique in the morning, if you have time.

This will help you start your day feeling fresh and rejuvenated.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR SKIN

Many people struggle with the options of either shaving their legs or using a
suitable hair removal product. There are advantages and disadvantages to each
method. Shaving increases the stimulation of hair growth and you may find, after
time, that you are shaving your legs more often than not ,so it may be a good idea
to try an alternative method.

If you do decide to try the hair removal method, make sure you use a suitable and
well-known product that has a reputable name. Always read the label and follow
the manufacturers guidelines and try the product out on an a small area of your
leg first to make certain that it does not cause any reactions.

Whichever method you decide to use, make sure you finish off with an effective
moisturiser once complete, to help your skin recover from the treatment.

CREATING A GOOD IMPRESSION
LOOKING AFTER YOUR FEET

This is an area which is neglected by many people but is important, especially if

you are embarking on a cabin crew career. Expect to be on your feet a lot of the
time!

Many people wear the wrong type and size of shoes for the work or activity they
are carrying out. Always wear the correct footwear, if possible, for each activity
that you perform. For example, if you are jogging or going for a walk to help you
keep fit, don’t wear poorly fitting shoes or trainers.

It would be wise to invest in a good pair of training shoes for this kind of activity
and you will probably find that they will last you years, making them a good
investment. Many people wear shoes without socks and whilst this is acceptable
on occasions, it does have the problem of causing the shoe to absorb harmful
moisture from your feet, which can lead to common foot problems such as
athletes foot etc.

Make sure you wear a thin pair of socks when carrying out physical activity, to
protect your feet and also to keep your training shoes dry.
Another useful tip is to try and expose your feet to the natural elements whenever
possible. Try walking around the house in bare feet in the evening, or wear flip
flops or something similar to allow your feet to breathe.

CREATING A GOOD IMPRESSION
LOOKING AFTER YOUR TEETH

We would all love to have fantastic teeth, which often transpires into a great
smile! Teeth care is obviously very important and, again, is often neglected from
an early age.

Having fantastic looking, white bright teeth may not be something that we can all
achieve, but making the most of what we already have is not a difficult process.
Make sure you clean your teeth ‘properly’ at least twice a day and visit your
dentist regularly for check-ups.

You may want to increase the brightness of your teeth and this can be achieved
by purchasing a suitable product from your pharmacy which will assist the
process. If that does not work then there is the option of professional treatment
from a suitable dental practitioner but this can be expensive.

Ask your dentist for advice on how better whitening can be achieved.

Your diet also has a dramatic effect on teeth staining and deterioration.

Continually drinking and eating foods which have a high sugar content will only
add to damaging your teeth, so limit the intake. Obviously, smoking will cause
staining of your teeth, whilst contributing to the ageing of your skin.

To prevent cavities, you need to remove plaque. Plaque is the transparent layer
of bacteria that coats the teeth and is harmful. The most effective way to remove
plaque build-up is to brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day.

Brushing also stimulates the gums, which helps to keep them healthy and prevent
gum disease. Brushing and flossing are the most important things that you can do
to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Toothpastes usually contain abrasives, detergents and foaming agents. Fluoride,

the most common active ingredient in toothpaste, is what prevents cavities. So
you should always be sure your toothpaste contains fluoride.

Remember that any form of surgery is normally irreversible and can be extremely
expensive, often running into thousands of pounds. You may decide to have

don’t make any impulsive decisions and make sure you take advice first, before
committing to any surgery.

We recommend you ask your dental practitioner for advice.

Dentists say that you should spend at least 2 minutes, twice a day, brushing your

-Here are some tips on how to brush your teeth properly:

-Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle against your gum line.

-Gently brush from where the tooth and gum meet to the chewing surface, in
short (about half-a-tooth-wide) strokes.

-Use the same method to brush all outside and inside surfaces of your teeth.

-To clean the chewing surfaces of your teeth, use short sweeping strokes, tipping
the bristles into the pits and crevices.

-To clean the inside surfaces of your top and bottom front teeth and gums, hold
the brush almost vertical. With back and forth motions, bring the front part of the
brush over the teeth and gums.

-Using a forward-sweeping motion, gently brush your tongue and the roof of your

-Use an egg timer or play one of your favorite songs while brushing your teeth to
get used to brushing for a full 2 to 3 minutes.

CREATING A GOOD IMPRESSION
A HEALTHY DIET

Maintaining a healthy diet is important to every cabin crew member. As previously

mentioned, we are what we eat and your diet can have a profound effect on how
you look and feel, and your general well being. If you currently smoke or drink to
excess then use this opportunity to stop, or reduce the amount.

A great way to start feeling healthy is to drink plenty of water every day. If you
currently work, then it is a good idea to carry a small bottle of water around with
you at all times, so that you can constantly keep yourself hydrated. This will help
to improve the look of your skin and help to keep your vital organs healthy and
functioning correctly.

We also advise that you eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, especially in the form
of snacks as an alternative to junk food or crisps and chocolate. Take a look at
your current diet or try writing down the things that you eat and drink during a
typical day.

Look to replace the unhealthy drinks and food with fresh water, fruit and
vegetables and you will begin to see and feel the difference almost immediately.
You will have more zest and confidence which will, in turn, give you greater
energy.

ENERGY BOOSTING DRINKS

Fruit smoothies are an excellent drink which can help increase your energy levels
as well as helping you look and stay healthy. They are also a fun and a tasty way
of ensuring you get your daily intake of fruit and vitamins.

As part of your daily health routine why not invest in a drinks blender and
begin to create your own fruit smoothies? If you buy smoothies from your local
supermarket you will undoubtedly pay well over the odds for something that
you can easily create yourself. Furthermore, you will have the option of creating
fantastic-tasting energy boosting drinks from a selection of fruits that you enjoy
the most.
