Optimism
Somewhat quietly, the Major League Baseball sea-
son began this past week. Each year, when the sea-
son begins, there is a sense of optimism among each
and every team. While some teams are fairly sure
they will not win the World Series, they still have
lofty goals to reach within the season.
Watching Opening Day games is a treat. The stands
are almost always full, as fans are excited about the
new season, and what this year’s team has to offer.
Fast forward to June or July. Several teams are al-
ready out of the race. They will not win, and fans are
finding many other things to do. Seats are empty,
and a manager may have even lost his job already.
But have you ever watched one of those teams con-
tinue to play hard? Maybe they don’t win tons of
games, but they continue to play just as the manager
demands, and their effort is as high as its been all
season. While it may be hard to watch the team lose
game after game, fans appreciate a team that contin-
ues to strive forward through a difficult season.
Is that not a picture of what we are required to do as

Christians? Nearly everyone who is converted to
the Lord starts out with great optimism and excite-
ment. They are, as we say, “on fire” for the Lord,
and are so thrilled to know the salvation that only
He offers.
But, over the years, life weighs us down. Tempta-
tions come, and the struggles of life continue to
mount. Some give up, and many others question
whether or not it is worth it.
What does God require of us? He requires that we
remain faithful. He commands us to continue our
walk with Him. He desires that we bear up in the
midst of difficult circumstances.
What helps us do that? Optimism! It can be done.
We can not only run the race, we can finish it.
Christ has walked the path, and laid out the exam-
ple. Just like the team that plays hard but is not
winning the World Series, your effort for Christ
may not “lead the headlines.” But you will be
thankful you remained faithful when He says,
“Well done.”
