Votive Masses

THE VOTIVE MASSES
Votive Masses are celebrations of the Holy Eucharist in which the

Proper (i.e., the Collect, Epistle or Lesson, and Gospel) is not that
appointed for the Day. Instead, the Proper is chosen with reference
to the intention for which the Mass is being celebrated.
Votive Masses may be celebrated on most free weekdays (ferias).

They are not normally celebrated on the ferias of Advent,
Christmastide, the Epiphany Octave, Septuagesima to Trinity
Sunday, all Sundays, Red-Letter Days, Ember Days and Rogation
Days.
The only exception to this list of excluded seasons for votive masses
concerns the Mass of Saint Mary on Saturday, a minor festival of
Our Lady that may be observed on all free Saturdays, including
Saturdays in Advent, and Saturdays between Low Sunday and
Ascension Day. It is traditional to set aside the first free weekday
(Feria) in each month as a Votive (Requiem) for the
Commemoration of the Faithful Departed. In the month of
November, it is appropriate to set aside one or more ferias for this
purpose. It is also traditional to set aside the first Thursday for a
Votive Mass of our Lord Jesus Christ the Eternal High Priest, and
the first Friday for a Votive Mass of the Sacred Heart.

A LMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hast given

unto us thy servants grace, by the confession of a
true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal
Trinity, and in the power of the Divine Majesty to

may evermore be our defence against all adversities;
who livest and reignest, one God, world without end.

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily I say
unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the

a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second

THE NUPTIAL MASS
At the Solemnization of Matrimony, the Priest, if he is to say the
Mass, is completely vested (including the wearing of the Chasuble),
with the exception of the Maniple. However, if the Priest is also to
officiate at the Solemnization of Matrimony before the Mass, then
he shall be vested in amice, alb, cincture, white stole and Cope;
changing from Cope to Chasuble before the commencement of the
Nuptial Mass.
After the exhortation Forasmuch as N. and N. have consented
together, and omitting the Blessing, the Priest puts on the Maniple
(or changes from Cope to Chasuble) and begins the Mass in the
usual manner. The husband and wife remain throughout at the
accustomed place before the Altar.

O GOD, who hast consecrated the state of
Matrimony to such an excellent mystery, that in it
is signified and represented the spiritual marriage and
unity betwixt Christ and his Church: Look mercifully
upon these thy servants, that they may love, honour,
and cherish each other, and live together in faithfulness
and patience, in wisdom and true godliness. O Lord,
bless them both, and grant them to inherit thy
everlasting kingdom; through the merits of thy Son
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
This Prayer is said with hands extended over their heads.
A LMIGHTY God, the Father of our Lord Jesus

Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and
earth is named: Pour upon you the riches of his grace,
sanctify ✠ and bless you, that you may please him both
in body and soul, and live together in holy love unto
your lives’ end. Amen.
Afterward he sprinkles them with Holy Water, and turning back to
the Altar says the prayer May the homage. Then he kisses the Altar
and pronounces the Blessing over the people in the usual manner.
