THE VOTIVE MASSES

Votive Masses are celebrations of the Holy Eucharist in which the

Proper (i.e., the Collect, Epistle or Lesson, and Gospel) is not that
appointed for the Day. Instead, the Proper is chosen with reference
to the intention for which the Mass is being celebrated.

Votive Masses may be celebrated on most free weekdays (ferias).

They are not normally celebrated on the ferias of Advent,
Christmastide, the Epiphany Octave, Septuagesima to Trinity
Sunday, all Sundays, Red-Letter Days, Ember Days and Rogation
Days.
The only exception to this list of excluded seasons for votive masses
concerns the Mass of Saint Mary on Saturday, a minor festival of
Our Lady that may be observed on all free Saturdays, including
Saturdays in Advent, and Saturdays between Low Sunday and
Ascension Day. It is traditional to set aside the first free weekday
(Feria) in each month as a Votive (Requiem) for the
Commemoration of the Faithful Departed. In the month of
November, it is appropriate to set aside one or more ferias for this
purpose. It is also traditional to set aside the first Thursday for a
Votive Mass of our Lord Jesus Christ the Eternal High Priest, and
the first Friday for a Votive Mass of the Sacred Heart.

glory above the heavens!
2 Out of the mouth of very babes and sucklings hast
thou ordained strength, because of thine enemies, / that

6 Thou makest him to have dominion over the
works of thy hands; / and thou hast put all things in

THE LESSON. Revelation 4. 1.

I N THOSE DAYS: I [John] saw, and behold, a door

was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I
heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me;
which said, Come up hither, and I will show thee things
which must be hereafter. And immediately I was in the
Spirit; and behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one
sat on the throne: and he that sat was to look upon like a
jasper and a sardius stone: and a rainbow round about
the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And round
about the throne four and twenty seats; and upon the
seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in
white raiment; and on their heads crowns of gold: and
out of the throne proceed lightnings and thunderings
and voices. And seven lamps of fire burning before the
throne, which are the seven spirits of God; and before
the throne as it were a sea of glass, like unto crystal; and
in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne,
four living creatures, full of eyes before and behind; the
first one like a lion, and the second like a calf, and the
third having a face like a man, and the fourth like a
flying eagle; and every one of them had six wings;
around and within they are full of eyes; and they rest
not day or night, saying,
Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God the Almighty,
Which was, and which is, and which is to come.
And when those living beings give glory and honour
and thanks to him that sitteth upon the throne, who
liveth for ever and ever, the four and twenty elders fall
down before him that sitteth upon the throne, and
worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their
crowns before the throne, saying,
Thou art worthy, O Lord,
To receive glory and honour and power;
For thou hast created all things,
And for thy pleasure they are, and were created.

THE GOSPEL. St John 3. 1.

T HERE was a man of the Pharisees, named

Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: the same came to
Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that
thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do
these signs that thou doest, except God be with him.
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily I say
unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the

V4
kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can
a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second
time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus
answered, Verily, verily I say unto thee, Except a man
be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into
the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is
flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the
sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and
whither it goeth; so is every one that is born of the
Spirit. Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How
can these things be? Jesus answered and said unto him,
Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these
things? Verily, verily I say unto thee, We speak that we
do know, and testify of that we have seen; and ye
receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly
things, and ye believe not; how shall ye believe, if I tell
you of heavenly things? And no man hath ascended up
to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the
Son of man, who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up
the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of
man be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in him
should not perish, but have eternal life.
OFFERTORY. Blessed be God the Father, and the only
begotten Son of God; and blessed be the Holy Spirit: for
the mercy he hath done unto us. [Alleluia].

O LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, we humbly beseech

in thy sight; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who
liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy
Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
Preface of the Holy Trinity.

V5
COMMUNION. Let us bless the God of heaven; and in
the sight of all living will we give thanks unto him:

acknowledge the holy and eternal Trinity to be
likewise one undivided Unity: mercifully grant; that
we, who have now received thy holy sacraments, may

THE LESSON. Revelation 12. 7.

T HERE was war in heaven: Michael and his angels

fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought
and his angels, and prevailed not, neither was their
place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon
was cast out, that old serpent, called the devil and Satan,
which deceiveth the whole world; he was cast out into
the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I
heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come
salvation, and power, and the kingdom of our God, and
the authority of his Christ: for the accuser of our

brethren is cast down, which accused them before our
God day and night. And they overcame him by the

THE GOSPEL. St Matthew 18. 1.

A T the same time came the disciples unto Jesus,

saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of
heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and
set him in the midst of them, and said, Verily I say unto
you, Except ye be converted, and become as little
children, ye shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little
child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
And whoso shall receive one such little child in my
name, receiveth me. But whoso shall offend one of
these little ones which believe in me, it were better for
him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and
that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
Woe unto the world because of offences: for it must
needs be that offences come: but woe to that man by
whom the offence cometh. Wherefore if thy hand or thy
foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee:
it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed,
rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into
everlasting fire. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it
out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter
into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be
cast into hell-fire.
Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones;
for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do always
behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.
OFFERTORY. An Angel stood by the altar of the temple,
having a golden censer in his hand: and there was given
unto him much incense, and the smoke of the incense
ascended up to God. [Alleluia].

they came together she was found with child of the
Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just

minded to put her away privily. But while he thought
on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared
unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph thou son of David,

B RETHREN: Let no man deceive himself. If any

man among you seemeth to be wise in this world,

the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For
it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

For all things are yours; whether Paul, or Apollos, or
Peter, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or

God.

THE LESSON. Revelation 21. 10.

A ND he carried me away in the spirit to a great and

high mountain, and showed me that great city, the
holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a
stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as
crystal; and had a wall great and high, and had twelve
gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written
thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the
children of Israel: on the east three gates; on the north
three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west
three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve
foundations, and in them the names of the twelve
apostles of the Lamb.

O UR Lord Jesus Christ saith: HE that hath my

THE GOSPEL. St John 14. 15.

JESUS said unto his disciples, If ye love me, keep my

commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he
shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide
with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth, whom the
world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither
knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with
you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you
comfortless; I will come to you. Yet a little while, and
the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I
live, we shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I
am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that
hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that
loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my

THE EPISTLE. 1 Corinthians 11. 23

B RETHREN: I have received of the Lord that which

also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus, the
same night in which he was betrayed, took bread; and
when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take,
eat; this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in
remembrance of me. After the same manner also he
took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is
the new covenant in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye
drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat
this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord's
death till he come. Wherefore, whosoever shall eat this
bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall
be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a
man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread,
and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh
unworthily eateth and drinketh condemnation to
himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

THE GOSPEL. St John 6. 27.

O UR Lord Jesus Christ said: Labour not for the meat

which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth
unto everlasting life, which the Son of Man shall give
unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. Then
said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might
work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto
them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him
whom he hath sent. They said therefore unto him,
What sign showest thou then, that we may see, and
believe thee? what dost thou work? Our fathers did eat
manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread
from heaven to eat. Then Jesus said unto them, Verily,
verily I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread
from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread
from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh
down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this
bread. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life:
he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that
believeth on me shall never thirst.
OFFERTORY: The priests of the Lord do offer the
offerings of the Lord, made by fire, and the bread of
their God: therefore they shall be holy unto their God,

THE EPISTLE. Hebrews 9. 15.∗

W HEREFORE Christ is the Mediator of the new

covenant, that by means of death, for the
redemption of the transgressions which were under the
first covenant, they which are called might receive the
promise of an eternal inheritance. For where a covenant
or testament is, there must also, of necessity, be the
death of the testator; for a testament is of force after

Book of Common Prayer p. 163 ff

V31
men are dead; it is of no strength at all while the testator
liveth. And therefore the first testament also was
dedicated with blood; for when Moses had spoken
every commandment to all the people, according to the
law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water
and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the
book and all the people, saying, This is the blood of the
covenant or testament, which God hath commanded
you. Moreover, he sprinkled with blood both the
tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. And
according to the law, almost all things are purified with
blood, and without shedding of blood there is no
forgiveness. It was necessary therefore that these
symbols of heavenly things should be purified thus; but
the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices;
for Christ hath not entered into holy places made with
hands, which are only figures of the true, but into
heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for
us. Nor need he offer himself many times like the high
priest who entereth into the holy place every year with
blood that is not his own: for then must he often have
suffered since the foundation of the world; but now,
once for all, at the end of time, he hath appeared to put
away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it is
appointed unto men once to die, but after this the
judgment: so Christ was once offered to bear the sins of
many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear
the second time apart from sin unto salvation.

Son Christ Jesus to be our only Mediator and
Advocate: so for his sake thou wouldst make of these

THE EPISTLE. Ephesians 4. 4.

B RETHREN: THERE is one body, and one Spirit, even

as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord,
one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is
above all, and through all, and in you all. And unto every
one of us is given grace, according to the measure of the
gift of Christ; wherefore it is said,
He ascended up on high, he led captivity captive,
He gave gifts unto men.
And when it is said, He ascended, what is it but that he
also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He that
descended is the same also that ascended up far above all
heavens, that he might fill all things. And he gave some to
be Apostles; and some, Prophets; and some, Evangelists;
and some, Pastors and Teachers; for the perfecting of the
saints for the work of the ministry, for the building up of
the body of Christ; till we all come, in the unity of the faith
and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect
man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of
Christ.

THE GOSPEL. St John 17. 20.

JESUS said, Neither pray I for these alone, but for them
also that shall believe on me through their word; that
they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in
thee, that they also may be one in us; that the world may
believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou
gavest me, I have given them; that they may be one, even
as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be
made perfect in one; and that the world may know that
thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, even as thou hast
loved me. Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast
given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold

my glory, which thou hast given me; for thou didst love
me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father,
the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee,
and these have known that thou hast sent me; and I have
declared unto them thy Name, and will declare it; that the
love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I
in them.

judgement of this world; now shall the prince of the
world be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth,

what death he should die.) The people answered him:
We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for
ever; and how sayest thou: The Son of Man must be
lifted up? Who is this Son of Man? Then Jesus said
unto them: Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk
while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you;
for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he
goeth. While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye
may be the children of light.

Christ was contented to be betrayed, and given up into
the hands of wicked men, and to suffer death upon the
Cross; who now liveth and reigneth with thee and the
Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
THE EPISTLE. Hebrews 10. 1.

B RETHREN: The law of Moses, having as it were a

shadow of good things which were to come, but not
the very image of those things, can never with those
sacrifices which they offered continually, year by year,
make the comers thereunto perfect; for then would they
not have ceased to be offered? since the worshippers,
once they had been purified, should have had no more
consciousness of sins. But in those sacrifices a
remembrance of sins is made over again every year. For
it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats
should take away sins. Wherefore, when he cometh into
the world, he saith,
Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not,
But a body hast thou prepared me:
In burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sin
thou hast had no pleasure:
Then said I, Lo, I come
(In the volume of the book it is written of me)
To do thy will, O God.
Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt-
offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither
hadst pleasure therein, (which are offered according to
the law;) then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God:
he taketh away the first, that he may establish the
second. By the which will we are sanctified, through
the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

V45
And every priest standeth daily in his ministry offering
many times those same sacrifices which can never take
away sins; but this man, after he had offered one
sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down at the right of hand
of God, waiting from henceforth till his enemies be
made his footstool. For by one single offering he hath
perfected for ever those who are sanctified; whereof the
Holy Spirit also is a witness to us. For after saying,
This is the covenant that I will make with them
After those days, saith the Lord,
I will put my laws into their hearts,
And in their minds will I write them;
then saith he,
And their sins and iniquities
will I remember no more.
Now where remission of these is, there is no more
offering for sin. Having therefore, brethren, boldness to
enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new
and living way, which he hath consecrated for us,
through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; and having an
High Priest over the house of God: let us draw near
with a true heart, in full assurance of faith, having our
hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our
bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the
profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is
faithful that promised;) and let us consider one another
to provoke unto love, and to good works; not forsaking
the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of
some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the
more, as ye see the day approaching.

therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is
finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.
The Jews therefore, because it was the Preparation,
that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the
sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,)
besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and
that they might be taken away. The soldiers, therefore,
came and brake the legs of the first, and of the other
which was crucified with him. But when they came to
Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not
his legs. But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his
side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

THE LESSON. Revelation 7. 9.

A FTER this I beheld, and lo, a great multitude, which

no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds,
and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and
before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms
in their hands; and cried with a loud voice, saying,
Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and
unto the Lamb. And all the angels stood round about
the throne, and about the elders, and the four living
creatures, and fell before the throne on their faces, and
worshipped God, saying, Amen; Blessing, and glory,
and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power,
and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.
And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What
are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence
came they? And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest.
And he said to me, These are they which came out of
great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and

made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore
are they before the throne of God, and serve him day
and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the
throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no
more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light
on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the
midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them
unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe
away all tears from their eyes.

THE GOSPEL. St Matthew 5. 1.

JESUS, seeing the multitudes, went up into a

mountain; and when he was set, his disciples came
unto him. And he opened his mouth, and taught them,
saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the

kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for
they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they
shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do
hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be
filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain
mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see
God. Blessed are the peace-makers: for they shall be
called the children of God. Blessed are they which are
persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall
revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner
of evil against you falsely for my sake. Rejoice, and be
exceeding glad; for great is your reward in heaven: for
so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

THE EPISTLE. 1 Timothy 3. 1.

B RETHREN: THIS is a true saying, If a man desire

the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A
bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one

V54
wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to
hospitality, apt to teach; not given to wine, no striker,
not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not
covetous; one that ruleth well his own house, having his
children in subjection with all gravity; (for if a man
know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take
care of the Church of God?) Not a novice, lest being
lifted up with pride he fall into condemnation of the
devil. Moreover, he must have a good report of them
which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the
snare of the devil.
Or
Hebrews 4. 16.

L ET us therefore come boldly unto the throne of

grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to
help in time of need.
For every high priest taken from among men is
ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he
may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: who can
have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are
out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed
with infirmity. And by reason hereof he ought, as for
the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. And no
man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is
called of God, as was Aaron. So also Christ glorified not
himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto
him, Thou art my Son, to-day have I begotten thee. As
he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever
after the order of Melchizedek. Who in the days of his
flesh, when he had offered up prayers and
supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that
was able to save him from death, was heard in that he
feared.

A T that time: The word of God grew and multiplied,

and Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem,
when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with

in the Church which was at Antioch certain prophets
and teachers; as Barnabas, and Symeon that was called
Niger, and Lucius of Cy-ré-ne, and Mán-a-en the foster
brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. And as they
were ministering to the Lord, and fasting, the Holy
Spirit said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work
whereunto I have called them; and when they had
fasted and prayed and laid their hands upon them, they
sent them away. And they, being sent forth by the Holy
Spirit, departed unto Seleúcia, and from thence they
sailed to Cyprus. And when they were at Sálamis, they
preached the word of God in the synagogues of the
Jews. And they had also John Mark as their minister.

THE GOSPEL. St Matthew 4. 13.

A ND Jesus left Nazareth, and came and dwelt in

Capernaum, which is upon the sea-coast in the land
of Zabulon and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled
which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying,
Land of Zabulon and land of Naphtali,
The way of the sea, beyond Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles;
The people which sat in darkness have seen a great
light;
To them which sat in the region and shadow of
death, light is arisen.
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say,
Repent; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. And
Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren,
Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a
net into the sea; for they were fishers. And he saith
unto them, Follow me; and I will make you fishers of
men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed

V68
him. And going on from thence he saw other two
brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his
brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending
their nets; and he called them. And they immediately
left the ship and their father, and followed him. And
Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their
synagogues, and preaching the Gospel of the kingdom,
and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of
disease among the people. And his fame went
throughout all Syria.

children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the
Lord our God shall call. And with many other words
did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from
this crooked generation. Then they that gladly received
his word were baptized; and the same day there were
added unto them about three thousand souls. And they
continued stedfastly in the Apostles’ doctrine and
fellowship, and in the breaking of the bread, and in the
prayers. And fear came upon every soul; and many
wonders and signs were done by the Apostles. And all
that believed were together, and had all things in
common; and sold their possessions and goods, and
parted them to all men as every man had need. And
they continued daily with one accord in the temple, and
breaking bread from house to house, did eat their food
with gladness and singleness of heart, praising God,
and having favour with all the people.

many days after, the younger son gathered all together,
and took his journey into a far country, and there
wasted his substance with riotous living. And when he
had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land;
and he began to be in want. And he went and joined
himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into

said, How many hired servants of my father’s have

will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him,
Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,
and am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me
as one of thy hired servants. And he arose, and came to
his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his

V84
father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell
on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto him,
Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight,
and am no more worthy to be called thy son. But the
father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and
put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on
his feet: and bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and
let us eat, and be merry: for this my son was dead, and
is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began
to be merry.
Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came
and drew nigh to the house, he heard music and
dancing. And he called one of the servants, and asked
what these things meant. And he said unto him, Thy
brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted
calf, because he hath received him safe and sound. And
he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his
father out, and entreated him. And he answering said to
his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither
transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet
thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry
with my friends: but as soon as this thy son was come,
which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast
killed for him the fatted calf. And he said unto him,
Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. It
was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for
this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was
lost, and is found.

THE LESSON. Genesis 28. 10

I N those days: Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and

went toward Haran. And he lighted upon a certain
place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was
set: and he took of the stones of that place and put them
for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
And he dreamed, and behold, the Lord said: I am the
Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac;
the land whereon thou liest to thee will I give it, and to
thy seed; and thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth:
and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the

V87
east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and
in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
And behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all
places whither thou goest; and will bring thee again
into this land, for I will not leave thee, until I have done
that which I have spoken to thee of. And Jacob rose up
early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put
for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil
upon the top of it. And Jacob vowed a vow, saying: If
God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that
I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put
on, so that I come again to my father’s house in peace:
then shall the Lord be my God, and this stone, which I
have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house, and of all that
thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

THE GOSPEL. St Matthew 24.3.

A S Jesus sat upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples

came unto him privately, saying: Tell us, when
shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of thy
coming, and of the end of the world? And Jesus
answered and said unto them: Take heed that no man
deceive you, For many shall come in my Name, saying: I
am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of

V93
wars and rumours of wars; see that you be not troubled;
for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not
yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom
against kingdom; and there shall be famines, and
pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these
are the beginnings of sorrows. Then shall they deliver
you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you; And ye shall
be hated of all nations for my Name’s sake. And then
shall many be offended, and shall betray one another,
and shall hate one another. And many false prophets
shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity
shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he
that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

children’s children: and peace upon Israel.
In Eastertide, instead of the Gradual is said:

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Ps. 20. The Lord send you help from
the sanctuary: and strengthen you out of Sion. Alleluia.
V. Ps. 134. The Lord that made heaven and earth: give
thee blessing out of Sion. Alleluia.
Or

BCP: Ps. 127. EXCEPT the LORD build the house, / their
labour is but lost that build it.
2 Except the LORD keep the city, / the watchman
keepeth vigil but in vain.
Alleluia, alleluia. It is but lost labour that ye haste to
rise up early, and so late take rest, and eat the bread of
carefulness; / for so he giveth his beloved sleep.
Alleluia.
After Septuagesima, no Alleluia, all Psalm verses form Tract.

V101
During Eastertide, Alleluia is said twice before the psalm portion,
and once after the last verse. It may be said after each verse.

THE GOSPEL. St Matthew 19. 4.

JESUS answered and said unto them, Have ye not read,

that he which made them at the beginning made them
male and female, and said, For this cause shall a man
leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife:
and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are
no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath
joined together, let not man put asunder.
OFFERTORY. My hope hath been in thee, O Lord: I have
said, Thou art my God, my time is in thy hand.
[Alleluia].
SECRET

O LORD, we beseech thee, to accept this gift which

we offer in honour of the holy ordinance of
matrimony: and grant that this work begun by the
bounty of thy goodness, may in all things be disposed
according to thy will; through Jesus Christ thy Son our
Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of
the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.
Amen.
Preface of Marriage.

Having said Our Father, and before saying Deliver us, O Lord, we
beseech thee, the Priest, standing at the Epistle side and turning
towards the man and woman as they kneel before the Altar, says
over them the following (but NOTE, that the third Prayer is
omitted where the woman is past child-bearing):

L ORD God of our fathers, bless these thy servants,

and sow the seed of eternal life in their hearts; that
whatsoever in thy holy Word they shall profitably learn,
they may in deed fulfil the same. Grant that they,
obeying thy will, and always being in safety under thy
protection, may abide in thy love unto their lives’ end;

V102
O HEAVENLY Father, we beseech thee to bless the
home of these thy servants by thine abiding
presence; that they who dwell therein, being preserved
from all evil, may joyfully serve thee in godly
quietness; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who
liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy
Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

O MERCIFUL Lord, and heavenly Father, by whose

gracious blessing mankind is increased: Bestow,
we beseech thee, on these thy servants the heritage and
gift of children, and grant that they may also live
together so long in godly love and honesty, that they
may see their children christianly and virtuously
brought up, to thy praise and honour; through Jesus
Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with
thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God,
world without end. Amen.
Then the Priest, turning back to the middle of the Altar, says
Deliver us, O Lord, we beseech thee, and the rest after the
accustomed manner; and after he has received the Precious Body
and Blood, he communicates the man and woman, together with
the congregation; and after the ablutions, proceeds with the Mass
as herein set out.

COMMUNION. Lo, thus shall the man be blessed, that

feareth the Lord: yea, that thou shalt see thy children’s
children, and peace upon Israel. [Alleluia].
POSTCOMMUNION

A LMIGHTY GOD, we beseech thee, let thy gracious

favour accompany the ordinance of thy love: that
those whom thou hast joined together in holy wedlock;
may by thy protection live in lasting peace; through
Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth
with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God,
world without end. Amen.
Having said the Mutual Salutation and Dismissal, and before
blessing the people, the Priest, turning himself towards the
Bridegroom and Bride, says the following Prayer and Blessing:

V103
O GOD, who hast consecrated the state of
Matrimony to such an excellent mystery, that in it
is signified and represented the spiritual marriage and
unity betwixt Christ and his Church: Look mercifully
upon these thy servants, that they may love, honour,
and cherish each other, and live together in faithfulness
and patience, in wisdom and true godliness. O Lord,
bless them both, and grant them to inherit thy
everlasting kingdom; through the merits of thy Son
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
This Prayer is said with hands extended over their heads.

A LMIGHTY God, the Father of our Lord Jesus

Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and
earth is named: Pour upon you the riches of his grace,
sanctify ✠ and bless you, that you may please him both
in body and soul, and live together in holy love unto
your lives’ end. Amen.
Afterward he sprinkles them with Holy Water, and turning back to
the Altar says the prayer May the homage. Then he kisses the Altar
and pronounces the Blessing over the people in the usual manner.
