APPLICATION FOR THE GRANT OF SCHEME

1. Title of the Project : Establishment of Mushroom Spawn Production Laboratory.

2. Name of institution :

3. Project Investigator :

4. Co-investigator :

5. Duration : Five Years

6. Location of Lab :

Background
Systematic research work on mushrooms was started at N. D. University of Agriculture
& Technology, Kumarganj, Faizabad with the sanction of the All India Coordinated Mushroom
Improvement Project (AICMIP) during 1993-94. The “Mushroom Spawn Production
Laboratory” was established in 2003 under “Central Sector Scheme for Mushroom Spawn
Production” through Directorate of Horticulture and Food Processing, Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow,
which further gave a boost to the mushrooms research work.

Present Status
 Spawn production and sale – not able to fulfill the demand.
 Experiments are being carried out as per technical programme of AICMIP.
 Demonstrations are being carried out in villages - >10 every year.
 Trainings are being organized for farmers.
 Regular surveys for new mushroom mycoflora and occurrence of diseases and insect -
pests are being conducted.

Opportunities
 Sale of mushroom as well as spawn and technical consultancy.
 Development of technologies and patenting of new strains.
 Imparting training to farmers and entrepreneurs for income as well as employment
generation.

Constraints
As a result of efforts made during last one decade, number of mushroom growers is
increasing day-by-day resulting in increased demand of spawn. There are some difficulties
in meeting out the regular supply of spawn on demand. The major constraints are irregular
electricity supply and unavailability of some needful equipment.

Facilities Available in Spawn Laboratory:

Spawn laboratory was established in the year 2003 with the following facilities available:
144

 Built-up laboratory area of 40’ x 25’ x 12’ with two insulated rooms.
 Autoclave – 2 Nos.
 BOD Incubator – 1 No.
 Boiling Kettle – 1 No.
 Iron Racks – 4 Nos.
 Split Air-conditioners – 3 Nos.
 Refrigerator – 1 No.
 Sieves – 2 No.
 Spawn Tables – 5 No.
 Furniture, etc.

With the generation of above-mentioned facilities spawn production and its sale have
been made. However, it is now difficult to fulfill the increased demand of spawn with the
available facilities. If some more infrastructure, equipment and apparatus are made available,
demand of spawn for entire eastern Uttar Pradesh can be fulfilled. It will help to increase the
mushroom production among the rural masses as well as commercial urban growers.

Objectives
 To strengthen the existing facilities in spawn laboratory for increased spawn production
of standard quality.
 To conduct maximum number of training programmes on mushroom cultivation
technologies.
 To plot demonstrations in selected districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh.
 To organize gosthies at the time of fruiting in demonstration beds to increase awareness
in society towards benefits of mushroom consumption.
 Production of commercial spawn of different popular mushroom species.
 To strengthen the facilities in mushroom spawn laboratory for the research and training work.
 Development and maintenance of improved strains of mushrooms.

Brief Technical Programme

 Procurement of sanctioned items.
 Maintenance of regular spawn supply to established growers as per demands.
 Regular maintenance of contact and need based Transfer of Technology to established
growers for continuous success.
 Training and demonstration to farmers/rural youth to establish mushroom production
unit for employment as well as income generation.
 Market survey and establishment of contracts with vegetable suppliers/ retailers.
 To organize Gosthies for spread of knowledge of cultivation and consumption of
mushroom with the participation of farmers from wide range of area and media.

Facilities and Budget Requirement

S. Items No. Approximate Justification

No. Cost
(Rs. Lac)
(A) Equipment/machinery/Infrastructure
facilities required
1 Generator (10 KVA ) 1 For uninterrupted electricity supply which
is essential for proper functioning of spawn
laboratory. Electric supply breakdowns for
more than 6 hours cause loss of cultures and
spawn, especially during extreme hot
periods.
2 Generator & Double 1 To keep generator safe and protected. This
Door Autoclave Rooms room will be constructed attached to
insulated room and double door autoclave
will be installed in this room with wall
connection with insulated room for aseptic
transfer of sterilized packets.
3 pH meter 1 To determine the pH and to maintain it at
desired level of individual species a digital
pH meter is desired.
4 Electronic Balance 1 For accurate weighing of components for
Accuracy 1 mg Capacity medium preparation, spawn production.
300 g
5 Double Door Autoclave 1 For aseptic transfer of sterilized materials to
insulated room / inoculation chamber. It
(For aseptic culture room
will help to minimize the chances of
transfer)
contamination and cost of spawn
production.
6 Digital weighing scale 1 For weighing of spawn, mushroom, straw,
Accuracy 10 g Capacity etc., a low precision high capacity digital
150 kg weighing scale is required.

7 Laminar-flow 1 In order to avoid contamination of cultures

and spawn, and to reduce the cost of
production one Laminar-flow is necessarily
desired.
8 Humidifiers 5 During dry periods it is always difficult to
maintain high level of humidity in
cultivation rooms; therefore, humidifires
are desired for demonstration to trainees
and for quality mushroom production.
9 Autoclave (externally 2 To sterilize the spawn bags in absence of
heated) power supply.

10 Plate heaters (Auto cut- 5 To increase room temperature of laboratory

off) during extreme winter as per need of spawn.

11 Air coolers (plastic 4 For cultivation rooms, to increase humidity

body) and to reduce temperature during hot
summer months.
12 Furniture- Chairs (50) 51 For office, laboratory use as well as for
and Table (1) sitting the trainees.

13 Speakers (sound system) 2 For training purpose.
