Mechirat Chametz, the Selling of Chametz

To avoid owning chametz/ leavened food or having chametz in your possession during Passover, tradition provides
us with a process called mechirat chametz. Originally, this process was devised for those Jews in the food or liquor
business with substantial quantities of chametz. To avoid serious financial loss, mechirat chametz was devised to allow
the sale of chametz to a non-Jew. It is an example of how Jewish law can respond to a problem created by its own
legal system.

While the form of the sale has changed over time, today it involves the real sale of chametz to a non-Jew before
Passover. It is a real sale in the sense that the non-Jew could pay the purchase price and keep the chametz. Also,
during Passover, the non-Jew has the right to come and eat as much of the chametz as she/he wants. After Passover,
the non-Jew resells the chametz to the Jew.

Because it is complicated, the sale is usually done through a rabbi who acts as your agent in the transaction. The rabbi
needs an authorization from you, which should be in writing, but if necessary can be by phone. Only food is sold, not
pots or dishes.

Adapted from The Jewish Holidays:

A Guide & Commentary by Michael Strassfeld

Please return this form to the Congregation Har Shalom office before Wednesday, April 13, so that Rabbi
Shoshana Leis has sufficient time to make the transaction.

DELEGATION OF POWER FOR SALE OF CHAMETZ

I, THE UNDERSIGNED, EMPOWER AND PERMIT Rabbi Shoshana Leis to act in my place and stead, as my agent, to sell

meant to be in conformity with the Torah and Rabbinic laws and regulations, and also be in acceptance with the law of the

INTERESTED IN THE INTERFAITH COMMUNITY?

We need a person to represent Congregation Har Shalom at the meetings that run September through June on
the 1st and 3rd Thursday mornings. It is a good way to meet people from other faith groups and learn about the
various Fort Collins non-profit agencies. The April meetings will be held at Har Shalom. It’s a great chance to
see what the Interfaith Council is about. Contact Beth Hammer at 635-2778 or hammerbe12@gmail.com.

JEWISH OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

The Jewish Outdoor Leadership Institute (JOLI) with Camp Ramah of the Rockies is a dynamic new program
that trains Jewish teens (entering 11th &12th graders) to become competent and confident outdoor leaders.
JOLI participants spend about half of their time at our rustic base camp, known as the Ramah in the Rockies
Ranch, living alongside chalutzim (pioneers/campers) in the Ramah Outdoor Adventure Camp. Participants live
in their own tent with a counselor but share facilities with chalutzim at Ramah Outdoor Adventure. Visit http://
